T hat the trees had to go didn't make
Jean Watt happy.
After all, some six d ecades ago,
she'd planted many or the pine and
eucalyptus giants. Watt and Allan
Beek, whose father Joseph began selling lots
on Harbor Island in 1937, had been a little
gullible at the time.
·poseph Beek) gave us a treasure map and
got us to dig the holes,,. she said. •He probably
gave us a bunch of blind leads and we found
the treasure at the last hole.•
Allen Beek said he remembers the story a
little different. While he and Watt watered the
young planlllngs, the treasure hunt had been
arranged for pure pleasure.
But despite some sadness over the loss of the
trees, she's not going to hold it against Donald
Bren , the Irvine Co.'s elusive chairman, w ho
plans to build a new house on the land.

A long ago as 1987,
when Peter Haynes
interviewed to
• become rector of St.
Michael and All
Angels. members
of the Corona del Mar congrega-
tion told him the church needed
Sunday school dassrooms.
Fourteen years later, on March
25, Haynes helped parish mem-
bers celebrate the completion of
their new parish center for the
first time. A grand opening cele-
bration will be held next weekend
during Easter festivities.
"We now have beautiful dass-
rooms." said Teri Corbet, minister
of religious education. "We met in
them for the first time last week.·
From the time the congrega-
tion formed in 1959, until its sanc-
tuary on Pacific View Drive was
completed in 1968, worshipers
met in various rented rpoms.( A '
church office and a small parish
hall were bwll kitty-cornered to
the sanctuary in 1976.
For Sunday school, kids assem-
bled m ·one long d.lcove, an open
area with a lot of tables,• Corbet
explained. #We put our group of
little ones at little tables in the
same room as our teenagers.·
Acoustics and cramped space
made it difficult to teach from
more than one lesson plan al a
time dOd, Corbet lamented, ·You
just can't have one lesson that
works for both a 3-year-old and a
10-year-old."
The congregation's steady
growth continued to make a diffi-
cult situation w orse.
·And, while our pansh mem-
belship increased by 5"/o last
year,· Senior Warden John Turner
spelled out, "our church school
population increased by 30%. •
Like other thriving coastal coun-
ty churches and synagogues in
recent years -mducling Temple
Bat Yahm, Presbyterian Church of
the Covenant, Manners Church
and Our Lady Queen of Angels -
St MJchael and All Angels faced
the challenge of expanding its
campus in a county where con-
struction-costs run high and real
estate is expensive and SCdfce.
The parish was fortundte to
have enough property to spread
out on. To help them develop a
feasible building plan lhey tured
Rengel & Co. Architects of Tustin
and asked consultants at Holli-

Chamber of Commerce.
And blackouts worry busi-
ness owners the most, he said .
The way things stand, power
will certainly go off in May and
Jun~ since additional e nergy
supplies won't become avail-
able unlit later in the summer.
·This isn't going to cover it,·
he said. "The governor hasn't
gone far enough.·
State legislators agreed that
blackouts represented a bigger
threat to the area's businesses
than higher electricity prices.
"I've had business owners
tell me, 'Rather than blackouts,
I'd operated my )>usiness four
days a week,"' said Assembly-
man J ohn Campbe ll {R-lrv1ne),
adding that the uncerta inty of
sudden outages had people
worried the most.
"From what I'm hearing in
this district, people are saying.
'Let's get some certainty,'" he
said.
Besides, he added, Friday's
decision by Pacific Gas & Elec-
tric officials to file> for Chdpter
11 bankruptcy showed that
Davis' proposal to help ailing
utility companies gel back m
good financial shape had unme-
r
dlately failed.
"(Davis] almost has lo go
right back to the drawing
board,• Campbe ll said. • r think
it continues to show his inabili-
ty to get trust from the people
involved m this problem.•
In his speech , Davis pro-
posed to give stdte money to
utility compt1.ntes to keep them
from going bankrupt. But the
of(er would come with some
strings. including an agreement.
to sell power to the state al a
low cost ror the next to years.
The compantes would also have
to agree to selling California's
powe r gnd to the state and
abandon lawsuits lhdl seek to
double consumer electricity
rates.
"It's looking bledk," said Ed
Fawcett, the president and chief
executive officer of the Costa
Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
"We're getting political state-
ments rathe r lht1.n solutions ... I
don't think IDav1s l t1.dded any-
thing yesterday. He's 1ust trying
to give the <1.ppedrance that he's
got things under control when
he's not had control from the
outset.•
The governor's plan would
also e xclude more than half of
all consumers from pnce hikes
and set up a tier system, wherq
cost for electricity wouJd
increase for big power users
"Here's the pomt: The more
you use," the more you pdy,"
Davis said in his speech.
"If you believed [Davis,j the
little guy wasn't going to be
impacted ,• said John Burkhard,
the president of the Me~a North
Corrimun1ly Assn ·
But to solve the overall prob-
1lem will tdke more than Lhdt, he
sjressed.
"There's no easy a nswer,•
Burkhard said. addmg that he'd
been working hard to reduce
his own energy consumption.
•Either you have the money to
pay the clectnc biU or put solar
celli on the roofs and tell the
electric company to stick 1t or
move out of Cdlifomia. What
else 1s there?•

T wenty Minute Workout
is a new fitness facility
that opened in Newport
Beach. The idea behind the
1\venty Mmute Workout is
this: by lifting weights slowly
at low repetitioris, you'll lose
weight and tone your body in
a very short workout. The
SuperSlow method grew out
of a study m the early ·sos
funded by the Nautilus Exer-
cise Corp.
Birch St. in Newport Beach.
lnformabon: (94 9) 756-1211.
"We do only one set of five
weight-bearing exercises and
each repetition takes approxi-
mately 10 secQnds to com-
plete the positive movement
and another ten seconds to
complete the negative move-
ment.• said Wes Scarberry.
owner of 1Wenty Mmute
Workout, in a press release.
•Our goal is to bring the
client to temporary muscle
exhaustion within no more
than sue repetitions on each
of five exer<:ises. We never
train our clients more than
twice a week.·
The limit on two trdining
sessions a week is to ctllow
the muscle growth that the
client has stimulated to have
a chance to de1£elop. accord·
mg to Scarberry. The work-
outs are by appomtment and
are pnvate. At the facility
there are •no rrurrors. no

It's in the cards at Fashion Island
C h40ty events are fre-
quently criticized for
the lavish cost of rais-
ing funds for a particular
cause. In other words, say
the most outspoke n voices,
why should thousands of dol-
lars of donations and under-
writing go to ballroom decor,
invitations, entertainme~t· '
and the social icing on the
fund-raising cake?
The answer is simple.

Championshig teams always

Not that Corona del Mar

eight innings, the Sea Kings
are probably asking th.em-
selves, "ls this really happen-

Down, 4-1, in their last at-

the Sea Kings tied the game
on an opposite-fi eld lhree-

Savopolos, their No. 9 hitter
in the order.
Then, in th.e eighth, the
Sea Kings (10-3, 7-0 in PCL)
scored without a hit to pull
ahead, and CdM senior right-
hander Cavan Cuyler closed
the door on the Artists (2-5 in

Verdugo, who pitched well
enough to win for the Artists,

defense. He struck out nine,
walked only one and allowed
just two earned runs.
ln th.e seventh, CdM's Wes
Hockinson reache d on an
error, one of five Laguna

inning. Derek Lewis followed
with a single to right, then an
out later, Savopolos drove a

coming in dramatic fashion.
