M•thls Winkler 0AtlV PILOT NEWPORT-MESA -It's JUSl not good el'\Ough. In simple tenns, that's the local response to the cures for Califor, nla's ongoing energy cri- sis Gov. Gray Davis outlined in a speech Thursda_y. ' When you set aside long- term solutions such as addition- al power plants, electricity rate increases of up to 34.5% won't avoid rolling blackouts. said Richard Luehrs, the president a nd chief executive officer of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce. And blackouts worry busi- ness owners the most, he said . The way things stand, power will certainly go off in May and Jun~ since additional e nergy supplies won't become avail- able unlit later in the summer. ·This isn't going to cover it,· he said. "The governor hasn't gone far enough.· State legislators agreed that blackouts represented a bigger threat to the area's businesses than higher electricity prices. "I've had business owners tell me, 'Rather than blackouts, I'd operated my )>usiness four days a week,"' said Assembly- man J ohn Campbe ll {R-lrv1ne), adding that the uncerta inty of sudden outages had people worried the most. "From what I'm hearing in this district, people are saying. 'Let's get some certainty,'" he said. Besides, he added, Friday's decision by Pacific Gas & Elec- tric officials to file> for Chdpter 11 bankruptcy showed that Davis' proposal to help ailing utility companies gel back m good financial shape had unme- r dlately failed. The compantes would also have to agree to selling California's powe r gnd to the state and abandon lawsuits lhdl seek to double consumer electricity rates. "It's looking bledk," said Ed Fawcett, the president and chief executive officer of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce. "We're getting political state- ments rathe r lht1.n solutions ... I don't think IDav1s l t1.dded any- thing yesterday. He's 1ust trying to give the <1.ppedrance that he's got things under control when he's not had control from the outset.• The governor's plan would also e xclude more than half of all consumers from pnce hikes and set up a tier system, wherq cost for electricity wouJd increase for big power users "Here's the pomt: The more you use," the more you pdy," Davis said in his speech. The idea behind the 1\venty Mmute Workout is this: by lifting weights slowly at low repetitioris, you'll lose weight and tone your body in a very short workout. The SuperSlow method grew out of a study m the early ·sos funded by the Nautilus Exer- cise Corp. Birch St. in Newport Beach. lnformabon: (94 9) 756-1211. "We do only one set of five weight-bearing exercises and each repetition takes approxi- mately 10 secQnds to com- plete the positive movement and another ten seconds to complete the negative move- ment.• said Wes Scarberry. owner of 1Wenty Mmute Workout, in a press release. •Our goal is to bring the client to temporary muscle exhaustion within no more than sue repetitions on each of five exer<:ises. We never train our clients more than twice a week.· The limit on two trdining sessions a week is to ctllow the muscle growth that the client has stimulated to have a chance to de1£elop. accord· mg to Scarberry. The work- outs are by appomtment and are pnvate. At the facility there are •no rrurrors. no music dnd no mterrupllons, • Scarberry srud. Greer Wylder BEST BUYS This SuperSlow program has been getting some national media attention. In other words, say the most outspoke n voices, why should thousands of dol- lars of donations and under- writing go to ballroom decor, invitations, entertainme~t· ' and the social icing on the fund-raising cake? The answer is simple. Throw a big party and they will come. And, hopefully "they" will bnng more mon- ey dnd support the cause. Fund-ramng and the chanty ball have become inseparable companions. ln fact, the gorgeous parties on dny cucu1t -and that means Costa Mesa to New York City to I footervtlJe and in between -compete to outdo one dnother to a ttract the ·A• llSt sooal and business leaders that naturally are ctlso frequently the most gen- erous donors. Angelitos de Oro, a small yet powerful group of around 50 local women who work in support of Big Broth- ers/Big Sisters of Orange County, will introduce a shopping card they are appropriately calling the • Angelitos Card.· Their partner in the ven- ture is Fashion Island, and presently some 45 merchants operating in the upscale shopping center have signed up to participate. More a.re expected to join the pro- gram. What is the progrdm? The Angelitos Card is a shopper's best friend. That's 20% on any- thing at any time during a five day shopping spree from April 20 to April 24. ln other words, Angelitos wants its patrons to buy a new card every year to support the charity during this annual fund-raising rally. The concept comes to Newport-Mesa from AngeU- to Trish O'Donnell. The Texas organization started the card concept some seven years ago, call- ing its card the "Partners Card,• named after its sup- port group in greater Dal- las.
