Huntington B'each turned in a
.024 rate and Jrvioe a .072
rate. Newport Beach crime
statistics were not available in
the Califom.ia Justice Depci.rt-
menl.Crime report.
' Nevertheless, Costa Mesa
did lead Orange County with
the largest percentage
increase in property crimes in
2000, rising 6% over 1999 to
921 reported incidents of bur-
glary and auto U1eft. And, in
my book, I'm not thrilled that
Costa Mesa's per capita crime
rate is on par with Santa
Ana's.
Note to City Council: Hire

Under the heading, "A
Man's Got To Know His Limi-
tations," U1e junk drawer
twns up the names of philan-
thropist-without-equal John
Crean and former Costa Mesa
Mayor Bob Wilson.
Crean grabbed the above-
the-fold headline in Satur-
day's Daily Pilot for his rather
indelicate trial balloon regard-
ing his interest in running for

County Health Care

Health Department reported.
A sewer line break in the
state's El Morro Beach mobile

excavation, reported Larry
Honeyboume of the county

of Rep. Christopher Cox (R-
Newport Beach). Said Crean:
"It would be kind of a. fun
thing to take a shot at some-
thing like that. If anyone
would want a 75-year-old
congressman."
Now I've long admired
Crean for his entrepreneurial
moxie and his unselfish heart.
But, indeed, no one wants a
75-year-old congressman giv-
en the blood battles that are
going to erupt over reappor-
tionment and the shift of U1e
El Toro debate'to the national
battleground. We need a·
vibrant and experienced war-
rior with brass knuckles and
bazookas. Crean is simply too
nice and too old.
As for former Costa Mesa
Mayor Bob Wilson, one could
only cringe with the rest of
the audience during his
lengthy and mostly inconse-
quential lecture on the city's
history during last Monday's
City Council deliberations
regarding annexation of Santa

WHAT HAPPENED:
The Planning
Commission on
Monday
approved a
Southern
C~lifornla
Edison Company plan to
d~de a 39,596-square-foot
'Piece of pr~ ~to two lots.
WHAT IT MEANS:
The property, at 373
Monte Vista Ave .• is an
Edison substation th~t was
constructed in 1956.
The company is proposing
to divide the property to
allow part of it. a 15, 159·
square-foot parcel, to be
used for housing.
The company has not
submitted a specific residen·
tial plan for the parcel.
WHAT HAPPENED:
The
commission
voted to
postpone a
decision on a
proposed sub·
division at 1965 Church St.'
and 1970 Newport Blvd.
WHAT IT MEANS:
The proposal by property
owner Jeny Palanjian is to
divide a 50-foot by 280-foot
lot into two SO-foot by
140-foot lots.
The proposed lots would
be smaller than the size
required by code
The notification informa-
tion did not include the
variances from the minimum
lot area and city staff
recommended that the issue
be postponed to allow prop-
er notification.
WHAT HAPPENED:
The
commission
denied a
proposal to
replace a two·

The proposal included a

coverage.
The codes require a 5-

up to 650 square feet of rear
yard coverage.
WHAT HAPPENED:
After
months of
postpone-
ments, the
commission
made a
decision to allow some
amendments to the
Lighthouse Coa.stal Communi·
ty Church's master plan.
The commission decided to
allow the church to use part
of its parking lot as a play
yard on weekdays and to
change the general plan to
reflect existing uses of the
church properties, but did not
approve a new early childhood
development center.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Some conditions of
approval include requiring
that the church provide
handicapped accessibility.

weeds. resurface and re-
stripe the parking lot. pro·
vide a trash bin, designate a
play yard, install planters.
construct a wall and submit
a drop-off and pickup plan.
