Jones is excited about the pos- sibilities of u~ing very inexpen- sive materials for bis boats. He's built dozens of canoes, and many of th.em are put together out of wood that is typically used as the veneer "skin" on doors. The materials for Mystical Enchantress, the boat he current- ly uses, only cost $40, he said. But to focus on the low price of the boat is to miss what makes it so extraordinary: the intricate craftsma.nShip that Jones puts into the details of the vessel, Mystical Enchantress, like many of his canoes (he's built dozens), is inlaid with patterns of colorful hardwood. On top of those pieces of rosewood and ebony, he attaches small fig- urines, arrowheads and beacts. Each piece, he says, has a sym- bolic meaning. Terrence ~11ips ~E HARBOR COLUMN Take me out to the ya~htclub 0 nee again, we're getting close to that time when yacht clubs bold their tradi- tional Opening Day ceremonies. . For those of you who are not members of a yacht club, let me explain. Opening Day is a joyous event where sailors celebrate the departure of Old Man Winter and welcome the sun, and that means it's time to break out your white slacks and blue blazers. In our harbor we have eight organi7.ations functioning as full-ser- vice yacht clubs. The granddaddy is the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, which was established in the early 1920s, very traditional and steeped in tradition. The Balboa Yacht Club is also considered a very traditional club with a tremendous racing history. The American Legion Yacht Club requires that you be an Anned Forces veteran or the child of a vet. The South Shore Yacht Club .is one of my favorites, as it reminds me of the days when my parents were members of the Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego. Very small. lots of family-oriented activities, limited facilities but an abundance of energy. The Voyagers Yacht Club was organized in 1941. It is the host club of the •Humphrey Bogart" and "Hot Rum" race series. The newest club in the harbor is the Newport Beach Yacht Club. NBYC is growing rapidly, very cost· effective, has a great facility and already bas sponsored several races. The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club bas a wonderful facility, very social, . as well as developing a great sailing tradition. . • The Udo Island Yacht Club requires that you live on Udo Island and has that close, neigh- borly feel to it. Buonarigo remembers those early •90s teams well. He was the varsity softball coach at Costa Mesa A.igh from 1990-95. He guided the Mustangs to CIF Southern Section playoff appearances in 1993, '94 and '95, the only playoff appearances in Mesa's history. •1 used to take my teams across the street to OCC to watch Nick 'Irani's teams play,• Buonarlgo said. He was named to all-conference teams numerous times in l<><>f ball and baseball. The late Wendell Pickens. who served many years as the Orange Coast baseball coach, once called Newkirk one of the three best pitchers he ever had. three years for the Mustangs. . He was a rugged lineman for Coach Al lrwin at Harbor I-Ugh in 1953 and '54. His '54 teammates featured some of the finest players in Southern Cal. including fullback Charley Berry, guard Glenn Thomas. the Mirkovich brothers and halfback D~ve Tamura. •Newkirk was outstandmg at OCC in football and was selected to the All-Eastern Conference squad once. but the one great all-time highlight came in late {all of 1957. It was a nabonal showdown with Santa Ana College. then ranked No. 1 in the nation and favored for the Junior Rose Bowl. I I . Newkirk. a member of the '56 OCC team which won the California JC State Championship. almost led OCC toward a second state title in 1957. His only pitching loss that year came at the end of the Southern Cal JC playoff loss to Pasadena, 4-3. The late Steve Musseau was the OCC head coach and designed a most impressive arc-ing defense, which choked the rival backfield speedsters like Bob Gaiters and Pervis graduating from Vanguard University. Perhaps it was a higher source of inspiration that persuadeQ Buonarlgo to start coaching. "When I was 19, there was talk of starting up a church league and I got into that,• he said. "From there, I spent a year coaching all different sports at Davis Junior I-Ugh before becoming the junior varsity coach at Mesa for five years.• After five years of N and five years of varsity, Buonarigo hooked up with OCC and be couldn't be happier. "Coaching at this level has a lot more freedom to do more things,• Buonarigo said. "It's also a challenge because at the high school level, you can mold and teach the player for four years, but at this level you have them for one, maybe two years. It's tough, but it's the kind of challenge I like.• This year, Buonarlgo spent extra hours on the prowl for the kind of players who would lead OCC back to some level of respect. •I really wanted to make sure we had nine players on that field that had a good chunk of experience,• Buonarigo said. ·r feel like we did that and after this year is over, it all starts again.• Buonarlgo bies to instill an even-keeled attitude for his Pirates' squad. "I try to teach them to stay level-beaded whether we win or lose,• Buonarlgo said. "I consider myself to be a very fair coach. I expect a lot from my players. I want them to perform well on the field and to work hard at every practice.• With softball being a game of execution and pitching, Buonarigo is a firm believer that speed kills. "I'm a pretty aggressive coach,• he said. •I love to hit and run, bunt and run, all sorts of little plays to keep the runners moving.• Buonarlgo. his wife, Sandy and their two-year-old daughter, Carley, reside in Tustin. J~Newkirk Newkirk's pitching mark at OCC for two years was 18-1. Although heaped with praise dwing the OCC years and receiving a flow of sterling recognition, Newkirk continues to direct firm credit to his teammates. Attention from Major League Baseball officials and one wannup box invitation by the Hollywood Stars was impressive to many. but Newkirk said he finally chose not to pursue professional baseball for a number of reasons. One reason included marriage and a child that required domestic concerns. Another recall found that the Cal Poly baseball team never advanced to championship levels, but Newkirk was named to the all-conference team all Atkins. Newkirk was one of those fierce OCC defenders who helped the Pirates win, 13-7. It was 13-0 going into the final minutes and it knocked the Dons out of the No. 1 slot. OCC won the championship. Another period he enjoyed dwing his earlier days was playing baseball for the American Legion team and the local municipal lea$1Ue horsehiders.
