an expensive slip.
Jones is excited about the pos-
sibilities of u~ing very inexpen-
sive materials for bis boats. He's
built dozens of canoes, and many
of th.em are put together out of
wood that is typically used as the
veneer "skin" on doors.
The materials for Mystical
Enchantress, the boat he current-
ly uses, only cost $40, he said.
But to focus on the low price of
the boat is to miss what makes it
so extraordinary: the intricate
craftsma.nShip that Jones puts into
the details of the vessel,
Mystical Enchantress, like
many of his canoes (he's built
dozens), is inlaid with patterns of
colorful hardwood. On top of
those pieces of rosewood and
ebony, he attaches small fig-
urines, arrowheads and beacts.
Each piece, he says, has a sym-
bolic meaning.

The ornate bits of woodwork
and ornamentation on Jones' boat
drew Balboa resident Gay Was-

"We were really intrigued as to
the workmanship of the canoe,"
she said.
But the simple, nearly silent
design of the craft also seemed
indicative of Jones' way of look-
ing at things.
."He just wanted to go out and
relax and not have to row but yet
not have the noise or the pollu-

The boat fits neatly into Jones'

Take me
out to the
ya~htclub
0 nee again, we're getting
close to that time when
yacht clubs bold their tradi-
tional Opening Day ceremonies.
. For those of you who are not
members of a yacht club, let me
explain. Opening Day is a joyous
event where sailors celebrate the
departure of Old Man Winter and
welcome the sun, and that means
it's time to break out your white
slacks and blue blazers.
In our harbor we have eight
organi7.ations functioning as full-ser-
vice yacht clubs. The granddaddy is
the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
which was established in the early
1920s, very traditional and steeped
in tradition.
The Balboa Yacht Club is also
considered a very traditional club
with a tremendous racing history.
The American Legion Yacht Club
requires that you be an Anned
Forces veteran or the child of a vet.
The South Shore Yacht Club .is
one of my favorites, as it reminds me
of the days when my parents were
members of the Mission Bay Yacht
Club in San Diego. Very small. lots of
family-oriented activities, limited
facilities but an abundance of energy.
The Voyagers Yacht Club was
organized in 1941. It is the host club
of the •Humphrey Bogart" and "Hot
Rum" race series.
The newest club in the harbor is
the Newport Beach Yacht Club.
NBYC is growing rapidly, very cost·
effective, has a great facility and
already bas sponsored several races.
The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club
bas a wonderful facility, very social, .
as well as developing a great sailing
tradition. . •
The Udo Island Yacht Club
requires that you live on Udo
Island and has that close, neigh-
borly feel to it.
For information about becoming
a member of one of these fine orga·
nizations or more about their Open·
ing Day ceremonies, please review

Perhaps it was a higher source of
inspiration that persuadeQ Buonarlgo
to start coaching. "When I was 19,
there was talk of starting up a church
league and I got into that,• he said.
"From there, I spent a year coaching
all different sports at Davis Junior
I-Ugh before becoming the junior
varsity coach at Mesa for five years.•
After five years of N and five
years of varsity, Buonarigo hooked
up with OCC and be couldn't be
happier.
"Coaching at this level has a lot
more freedom to do more things,•
Buonarigo said. "It's also a challenge
because at the high school level, you
can mold and teach the player for
four years, but at this level you have
them for one, maybe two years. It's
tough, but it's the kind of challenge I
like.•
This year, Buonarlgo spent extra
hours on the prowl for the kind of
players who would lead OCC back to
some level of respect.
•I really wanted to make sure we
had nine players on that field that
had a good chunk of experience,•
Buonarigo said. ·r feel like we did
that and after this year is over, it all
starts again.•
Buonarlgo bies to instill an
even-keeled attitude for his Pirates'
squad. "I try to teach them to stay
level-beaded whether we win or
lose,• Buonarlgo said. "I consider
myself to be a very fair coach. I
expect a lot from my players. I want
them to perform well on the field and
to work hard at every practice.•
With softball being a game of
execution and pitching, Buonarigo is
a firm believer that speed kills. "I'm
a pretty aggressive coach,• he said.
•I love to hit and run, bunt and run,
all sorts of little plays to keep the
runners moving.•
Buonarlgo. his wife, Sandy and
their two-year-old daughter, Carley,
reside in Tustin.
J~Newkirk
Newkirk's pitching
mark at OCC for two years
was 18-1.
Although heaped with praise
dwing the OCC years and
receiving a flow of sterling
recognition, Newkirk continues
to direct firm credit to his
teammates.
Attention from Major League
Baseball officials and one
wannup box invitation by the
Hollywood Stars was impressive
to many. but Newkirk said he
finally chose not to pursue
professional baseball for a
number of reasons. One reason
included marriage and a child
that required domestic concerns.
Another recall found that the
Cal Poly baseball team never
advanced to championship
levels, but Newkirk was named
to the all-conference team all
Atkins.
Newkirk was one of those
fierce OCC defenders who
helped the Pirates win, 13-7.
It was 13-0 going into the final
minutes and it knocked the
Dons out of the No. 1 slot.
OCC won the championship.
Another period he enjoyed
dwing his earlier days was
playing baseball for the
American Legion team and the
local municipal lea$1Ue
horsehiders.
Newkirk majored in
economics in college, but later
taught social studies at Harbor
I-Ugh from 1964-1980. He also
coached the cross country team
at Harbor for six yea.rs.
A man of different sports. Jim
Newkirk. and a member of the

ome people might look at the City of
VtSalia as nothing more than a quaint
little town off of 1-Ughway 99; a rest stop
on the way to Fresno; a place to get some
really killer antiques.
But if you're a member
of the Orange Coast
College baleball team,
Visalia is a magical oasis;
a place of rebirth; a place
where a batter can
magically get in a groove;
leadoff hitter, Laws, went 4 for 6 in OCC's
14-1 pounding of San Diego City. Honorable
mention goes to Willie Keller, who had three
doubles.
Game-four heroes: Robert Deven and Jason
Reuss. Oeven threw six strong innings. 1 limiting the College of the Sequoias to only
three runs, which in community college
baseball is a pretty bard thing to accomplish.
Reuss, whose dad played .... ah never mind,
clubbed his 1 lth home run of the teeson. a
three·run shot that gave the Pirates the
breathing room they needed for a 7...3 win.
Speaking of Reuss, he now bu 26 home
runs in his OCC career, putting him nine
dingen behiJid Joey James' all-time record ot
35. But with only lour games rwmalning f«
the Pirates, James' bo&d on the the top spot
should remain intect.

•One thing we tried to do
was make them throw
strikes,• Estancia Coach
°?ug Deats said.
And boy did Rancho
Alamitos struggle in that
department. It was especially
galling for the Vaqueros in
the seventh and eighth
innings, when they w;alked
seven Eagles.
In the seventh, Witlt the
score 6-4 in Rancho Alamitos'
· favor, Estaricia's Jordan Hart
led off with a bloop single.
Casey Gates, Justin Lund,
Armando Ortiz and A .J.
Perkins, then walked after
Hart's hit, and that drove in
the Eagles' tying runs.
In the eighth inning,
Estanda's Brent Davis led off
with a free pass. After a sacri-
fice bunt moved him to sec-
ond, Ha.rt reached on an error
by the shortstop. Rancho
Alamitos then walked Gates
and Lund to account for
Estanda's winning run.
Estancia took a 2-1 lead in
the first inning. Ortiz led oft
,.qith a single, and Perkins
walked. After a failed sacrifice
bunt attempt, David Alciva
doubled in a score, and Davis
singled to drive in Akiva. Ran-
cho went on to a 5-2 lead.
Estancia stayed dose.
Lund singled in a run in the
fourth, and Akiva. walked
with the bases loade<i, in the
fifth to make the score 6--4,
setting up the exciting base
on balls segment.

then crushed a double into
the right-c~nter Held gap .to
clear the bases. He later
scored on a wild pjtth,
Estancia scored one in the
fourth when Green came
home on another wild pitch.
In the.fifth, the Eagles'. Gates.
got hit by a pitch. The next
batter, J.B. Goff, singl~.
They both came in on consec·
utive fielder's choices.
Down by one run heading
into the sixth, Green led of
with a double. After Davis
was hit by a pitch, Matt
Mueller tied the game with a
single. An out later. Gates
was hit by a pitch for the sec-
