A playground.

Alone, they are simple, everyday
things. The trivial, the inanimate,·
the inevitable.
But together, they ca~ forge a
poyjerful story. A story of innocence.
Of unthinkable tragedy. Of a suffer-
ing community's swift resolve to
recover and rebuild. Of the healing
and celebration of JlJe that .even(ual-
Jy comes. And of the slap of cold, ·
hard reality once again. ·
A year ago today, at 5: 15 p.m., a
man drove his brown 1961 Cadillac
through a chain-link fence that sep-
arated Santa Ana Avenue from
about 30 preschoolers at the South-
coast Earl hildhood Learnin
Center. The car careened into the
playground, ru·nning over children
before smashing into a tree.
7Wo children, 3-year-cld Brandon
Wiener and 4-year-old Sierra Soto,
were killed. Police said the driver,
Santq Ana resident Steven A1Jen
Abrams, told them he did ii on pur-
pose, with the spec!fic intent of
"executing" innocent children.

Soffer conte nds that the
department can only ~lose a

if there is an immediate health
threat. He claims the action
was taken because of a
backed-up drain in the
kitchen, which he insisted is
not a drain but was merely
water left ove("[tom mopping.
If it is actually 'a drain, the
department's concern would
be the immediate danger of
raw sewage in the kitchen.
Soffer has requested a hear-

In the meantime, continuing

in a $1,000 fine or six months

Back in 1995, he foug ht
