A plan to save _ Qluffs . and preserve vieW:s
• Newport Beach is considering putting in place a policy
to require reviews of homes on the city's coastal bluffs.

mission from the conunissioners.
Jay Cowan, who proposed a
new 6,800-squa.re-foot residence,
eventually succeeded with tus plan
after making some changes. The
other applicant's 12,299-square-
foot home didn't make the cut.
After all, a council policy that's
been on the books al least smce
1988 states that new buildings
"shaU be controlled and regulated
to insure, to the extent practical,
the preservation of public views,
the preservation of unique and ndl-
ural resource~ and to minimize the
altera'tion of natural land forms
along bluffs and cliffs.·

mended that council membe~
adopt a process that would reqwre
a so-called site plan review for all
projects on the village's coastal
bluffs.

At the edrliest, the new rule could
become effecuve June 7.
That's a question Edward Selich,
the chair of the city's planning com-
mission, raised last September
when he and his colleagues
reviewed plans for two new homes
on the bluffs in Corona del Mar.
The Breakers Drive residents
wanted to build their houses taller
than allowed and had to get per-
~ed that the proposed man-
sion would not have required their
approval if the applicant had
remained within height limits,
commissioners began looking for a
way to protect the city's bluffs from
vanishing under such large, new
homes.

Michael Kranzley, addmg lhdt
"people are building bigger and

economic boom of the last few

Realtor Bill Cote said Friday he is considering
a run for the Congressional seat of Rep.
Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach), largely
because h e doesn't believe any of those
mulling their own campaigns have true ties to
the district.

Cote stressed that he would make no

Earlier this month, word' leaked out of

for vacant seats on the 9th Circuit Court of

While Cox has been quiet about the rumor,
saying little other than to reiterate that he 1s
happy as the fifth-ranking Republican in the
House, a number of possible contenders have
said they would run if Cox moved to the fed-
eral judgeship.
The list contains state Sen. Dick Ackerman
(R-Tustin), Assemblyman Bill CampbeU (R-
Vtlla Park) and Supervisor Todd Spitzer. 0th·
ers who are considering a run, or are being
courted, include former Assemblywoman
Marilyn Brew er, former Rep. Jim Rogan,

Always
watching

·our hope lies not 111 the man we put on

-Don Basham
I remember the day the first man walked on
the moon. It was July 20, 1969. It was my
sister's 17th birthday,
and we had a house full
of family. It was a celebra-
tion of my sister, as well
as a ti.me to gather in the
family room and join the
rest of the world watching
the first footprints made
on the moon.
Neil Armstrong was
the astronaut whose one
small step for man was
one giant leap for
mankind. It was dramatic.
I remember that conversa-
tion stopped when we
watched hun first touch
the desolate lunar land-
scane. I remember that

can flag. I remember that we ate homemade
lasagna.
I remember the day I started third grade. I
was m d new school and -a new state, and I
hadn't made new fnends yet. I missed my old
school, my old state and my old friends. A
cute girl with blond hair went out of her way
to befriend me. r remember standmg next to the play-
ground fence looking out al the street. But I
turned around when I heard a sweet voice
say, "Hi, my name is Dennie. What's yours?"
I told her my name, she introduced me to
her friends and taught me how to play hop-
scotch, wh1ch became my favorite recess
activity. God knew I needed a spedal touch
and a special friend and sent Denrue at just
the nght time. She took a courageous step
reaching out to me, and I will always remem-
ber that day. God continued to bless me
through my friendship with Dennie, and she
conbnues to be a speodl fnend to this day.
Two years later I switched to another
school, and though I didn't see Dennie often, r
always enioyed 1t when I dld. She was always
friendly and happy to see me. It was obvious
that there was someUung dtlferent about Den-
nie. She clearly had a deep inner peace and
joy that r did not see m my peers, or in myself.
She often talked about God hke she really
knew who He was.
I'd grown up in a loving family that
believed in a loving God. We went to church
on Sundays, smd grace at med.ls and prayers
at night. But Dennie swd things I hadn't heard
before, or if I had, I'd never really listened or
thought about what they meant.
She told me about the dtlference between
religion and a personal relationship with God.
She talked about God's love, but better than
that, she showed me God's love.
God reached out to me agrun through Den-
rue, agatn at just the nght ti.me. She said I
could JUSt ask God lo be a part of my life and I
ctid. The change tn my umer sense of joy,
peace and purpose has been dramabc.
Tomorrow 1s Easter. Easter is a drarnabc
day that comes at JUSl the right time -in the
middle of a season of freedom and renewal.
Easter 1S a day to remember the extent of
God's love.
It's a day that I want to do more than just
remember all God has done. Instead, it's a day
that I want to get to know Him better.
And you can quote me on that.

A "Service or Gdlhenng Darkness" at
Costa Mesa's Presbyterian Church
of the Covenant on Thursday was
one of the church's more dramatic sanctu·
ary events during Holy Week.
The congregation read through the
final hours of Jesus' life while professional
actors from Hollywood Presbyterian
Church acted out the Last Supper. Orches-
tral music played m the background and
the area gradually darkened as. one by
one, each of seven l.Jt candles went ouL
The coronabon ~at m silence and dark-
ness for a few minutes, thinking about the
following: That Jesus said he was the light
or the world and that when he died, the
light didn't extinguish but, rather, left.
"We share with people at the service
that this ls the first part of the story and the
rest will be told Sunday morning,• said
Pastor Tun M cCalmont.
ln celebration of Easter, local churches
in Costa M esa and Newport Beach will be
doing the same lhls weekend. Most
churches will offer dt ledst two Easter ser-
vices on Sunday wtth messages focusing
on why Jesus dJed <:llld his resurrection.
Bruce Merrifield. pastor dt Harbor 1iin.i-
ty Baptist Church in Costd Mesa. will con-
nect his message with the metaphor of
adoption. He will teU the true story of an
adopbon that took place after the Korean
War.
"I'll tie that mto the fact thdt God is
wanting to adopt us,• he said. "Thal he's
worked out all the adoption papers. the
costs and all we have to do lS dgree to the
adoption.•
Sunday's semce will also mclude a
physical demonstration of one part of blbli·
cal history. A tomb, which will be built
today on a platform complete with a rock
that rolls away, will symbolize the scene
when Jesus died and people gathered at
his tomb. In lhe story, the rock had been
removed and this was a sign that Jesus
had resurrected from the dead.

With recent violent events, .no 1V is fine with Steve
F or those who may not
know, here is an ele-
ment of our family's
lifestyle In a nutshell: My
wile and I have not watched
television for more than five
years and our two kids have
not watched television for
more than tWo. And, yes,
this is my annuaJ anti-TV
tant, which always occurs in
mid-April, just prior to
National.no-TV Week,
which begins this year on
April 23.
1Wo recent events have
made my dislike of televi-
sion that much more intense
and have fortified the moun-
tain of evidence proving
that TV is a very bad influ-
ence on children.
The first came in Jdnuary
when the U.S. Surgeon
General reported that
watching television pro-
motes violent behavior i n
children. Even more alarm-
ing was the finding that the
violent behavior occurred
regardless of whether th<'
programs the children
Steve Smith
WHAT'S UP.
Wdtched were VJOJent.
The second event ts actu-
ally two, both of which
occurred last month JUSl
south in the San Diego area.
The two high school shoot-
ings shoc ked the nation for
a millisecond, until most of
the media realized that Wall
Street's high-tech meltdown
was a bigger story than
cdmpus safety.
Arter San Diego, we
were told once agdm that
our schools are saf P, that
given the enormou"' num-
ber of children dllcnding
school, these shootings
were not even a half-blip on
the violence radar. It's the
same line the PAA trots out
every lime a plane crashes
and we're supposed.to
understand that it's more
dangerous to drive to the
supermarket than to fly to
Sall Lake Cit y, which has
issued 30,000 concealed
weapon~ permits.
In another year, or even
at another time of year, I'd
bo 1rr lock step wilb the sta-
Lislicians, asking people to
caJm down while tosSing
out the word ·aberration "
like so many plastic Easter
eggs.
Exceptthdtl no longer
agree with the spokes peo-
ple, not after the Surgeon
General's report, w hich WdS
quite clear: Watching tele-
vision promotes violent
behavior in children. There
wen" no qualifiers in the
rc>port, no ui.e of "may"
cause or "could" ca use, 1ust
i.I direct link lrom the evi -
dence to the fa cts.
Of course, no one can
prove that television caused
the two people to shoot up
the San Diego high schools
or any school, but we
should not be taking any
chances with our children.
In light of such a strong
statement by the Surgeon
General, we should take a
second and look harder dt
raising TV-free kids.
But we're not taking
enough precautions. Across
lhe country. only 5,300
schools have a formdl pro-
gram to reduce or ehmindtc
the innuence of television
from the lives ol students.
H ere in Newport-Mesa, the
district saw ht to estdblish a
progrnm to punish bullies
but did nothfng to stop what
very well m dy be one of
bullying's major causes. We
have no formal TV reduc-
tion program in our distnct.
There's another redson to
get klds lo tum off the tube.
It is a fact that when kidi.
turn off the TV they stdrt
redding; redding is the No.
1 activity that replaces tele-
VlSlon viewing. followed by
playing with friends
At our local schools. we
spend lots of time and mon-
ey promoting "Just Read, H
which is a very line pro-
gram, but it would be much
more effective 1f we dlso
ran cl concurrent program to
encourdge familJes to turn
off the 1¥.
Last year, the school

School proved safe Friday for
students who braved the last
day of classes before spring
break, despite a bomb threat
made earlier in the week.
A warning that #Nazi

school on Friday the 13th
was found scribbled on a
bathroom wall on Tuesday
by two female students.
School officials immedi-
ately contacted the Costa
Mesa Police Department and
an outside security agency,
which combed the school
overnight for any sign of a
bomb.
Students and staff began
the day warily, but before
long it was only the absence
of about one-third of the stu-
dents that reminded them of .
the scare.
#I think as the day goes by
and things calm down we're
all certain that there isn't an
explosive device here,• said
Steve Pavich, the assistant
principal. #!Police I assured
me that most of the night
officers checked in stairwells

Bradbury helps KOCE salui~ kaderS at AristekJ Awards
H e walked to the podi-
um cautiously. His
steps were less than
secure. For a man who had
fearlessly traveled territory
that other mortals only
dreamed of explonng, the
ravages of time on the body of
this brave soldier of humanity
were only a renunder that we
are all ultimately destined to
an equal plane of existence.
Ray.Bradbury, the mid-
twentieth century mind-
expanding author of •The
Martian Chronicles,• reached
the microphone at the Sutton
Place Hotel, Newport Beach
and suddenly, instantly, his
painful and slow walk to get
there was forgotten.
Bradbwy, 80, opened his
mouth to speak, his eyes twin-
kling with delight at being
part of the crowd and still in
the game. His brilli611t mind,
crisp, playful and eager to
impart ideas, hushed the
crowd of some 300 Orange
County advocates of public
television who had come to
share in the 2nd annual Aris-
teia Awards organized by
KOCE-1V.
And then he told the audi-
ence, "We can'.t find solutions
to our problems because we
have made every important
issue political. None of the
answers to our challenges can
be found in a political pos1-
bon. None.·
For Bradbury, best-selling
author, screenwriter, urbctn
planner, teacher, dreamer and
VJSionary, the world is an
evolving human experiment
m which he has played the
role of instigator for most of his
We. His ideas have challenged
the norm and forced others to
open doors previously shut.
Bradbury dreams of his
grandchildren inhabiting
Alpha Centari. He sees planet
Earth as a place where peace
reigns and good prevails. And
he challenges those who
refuse to open their rrunds to
possibilities to stand aside and
get out of the way.
"Why are we so afraid of
nuclear power?" he demands
of his audience. "We have the
ability to solve our energy cri-
THE CROWD
sis, yet we are paralyzed by
unfounded fears of nuclear
disaster. We have the technol-
ogy to prevent disaster, yet
we do not expand the use of
our nuclear power to advance
humanity. lt's insanity."
A planned 10-minute
keynote address lasted nearly
an hour as one of the brilliant
minds of our time hit the hot
button issues of the day.
"Whatever you do, do not
watch any local news on tele-
vision. It is demeaning,
demoralizing and worthless.
A litany of car crashes, mur-
ders and shootings, the end
result of which brings down
mankind, sending a message
of hopelessness and futility. It
is no wonder our nation, our
world, suffers from a collective
negative psychosis.•
The applause broke the
silence in the room. Ironically,
the masters of ceremony for
the evening were KOCE's
local news arichors Ed Arnold
and Ann Pulice, who had
made a very dear distinction
over their roles on KOCE's
·Real Orange,• compared to
commercial news coverage on
television, earlier in the
evening.
Bradbury was invited to
Orange County by his friend
Mary Lyons of Newport
Beach. Lyons, an ardent sup-
porter of arts and education in
Newport-Mesa, was a former
high school teacher who first
had the pleasure or meeting
Bradbury many years ago
when he would come to New-
port Harbor I-ligh to talk with
students.
·He is a truly unique man:
she told the crowd. •There is

From left, luncheon chairman Kathy Pearson joined High Priority Pr~sldent Maggie Pohlman and symposium
chairman Darrellyn Mellll at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel for "Garden of Hope," a day of lnfonnation,
lnsplraUon and celebraUon sponsored by High Priority (The Breast Cancer Information Network) and the
Susan G. Kome n Breast Cancer Foundation.
no one else quite like hifn· •
As he finished, the ati'Cli-
ence rose to its feet to send the
message that it had shared in
an hour of mind-expanding
hwnan contact. Sadly, Brad-
bury ended by sharing the
realization that mankind had
not developed as far as he
might have hoped during his
lifetime. Yet, he confirmed his
lifelong attitude that it is far
better to swim upstream and
fight the current than to give
in to mediocrity.
The evening was organized
by Gloria Gae Gellman and
Peggy Goldwater Oay, and in
addition to Bradbury, featured
an address by KOCE chair-
man Mel Rogers on the state
of television. Rogers began his
address using an anecdote
from an early script for the
series "Lassie" and then mov-
ing forward to illustrate how
times have changed.
Awards were presented to
community leaders Bemlce
Hird, Jack Peltason and
Arnold Beckman. The 101-
year-old Beckman, a leg-
endary scientist, appeared on
stage at the very end of the
evening to accept his Aristeia
Award as the crowd once
agam gave up a rousing
standing ovation.
More than $130,000 was
raised from donor support and
contributions collected from a
live and silent auction featur-
ing, among other items, the
exceptional work of Laguna
Beach artist Robert Schaar
and a generous travel pass
valued at more than $16,000
p rovided by Delta Airlines.
Spotted in the crowd were
corrununity leaders Betty
Belden Palmer, Dean Corey,
Jim and Lynne Doti, Irv Gell-
man., Janice Johnson, Mered-
ith Khacb1g1an, Leon and
Molly Lyon, Sharon McNal-
ley, Eric and Ula Nelson. Al ,
and Trlsba Nichols, Anne
Nutt. Essie Ptnsker, Elaine
Redfield. Mary Roosevelt.,
Ken and Donna Iglesias and
Garth and Marian Bergeson.
To compliment the high
powered intellectual tone of
the everung. entertainment
was proVJded by the Hutchins
Consort, a renowned group of
players on acoustically
matched violins led by local
musician Joe McNalley.

"I think the main thing we
we're trying lo do is break
from the stereotype or old

from her home m Carmel.
A comic caper, ·Beyond

Pe rsonally, Miller said she

"Which doesn't mean I
believe kids should use Jt for
recreabonal reasons,· she

The book cdffic out of d

Livingston and Houy were a
part of.
"We kept readmg these
books that we d.Jdn 't think
were very good in terms of
stereotyping old people, and
we said 'We can do better
than that,•• said the woman
who recently went to a con-
ference titled "Growing Old
Disgracefully.•
The friends decided to set
the story in small town where
not much happened, came up
with characters, as51gned one
another parts, started acting it
out and a plot emerged.
•The other two now tell
me they were just humoring
me,· Miller said.
Maybe so. Miller Sclld that
Houy, 83, never bothered to
tell her husband what they
were doing until after the book~ published. And
lh'en. she was a little uneasy
about the topic. ('
•The book cover has a
giant marijuana Jeaf, a little
hard to ignore,• Miller said.
•{Houy) said, 'Oh dear, oh my.
My hushand's against mari-juana.'"-,-
But it all tumed out OK.
And really, the story is about
more than drugs.
•we talk about the fact that
one old lady can be ridiculed,
• but if you get enough of them,
they can be a force for
' change,• Miller said.
Already Miller has been a
force for change in the lives of
many Costa Mesa residents.
' After all. she taught for more

High School -everything
from English and aeattve
writing to psychology and

ARCADIA -After a one-year
stint at Citrus College, the 34th
annual Arcadia li'ack and Field
Invitational is back at Arcadia High
and an estimated 2,000 athletes
from around North America and
Australia are set to set the track on
fire.
"This meet is even more compet-

Steen, last year's .<:IF Southern
section Division n champion in the
1,600-meters, and two-time Division
ll cross country champ, posted the
nation's top 1,600 time at the Adidas
Meet of Champions (4:50.2).
Look for Steen to improve on her
fourth-place showing from last

with a 4:58.33.
Some of the runners who will be
nipping at Steen's heels include Ali-
cia Ctaig from Campbell County
High (Wyoming). Virginian Kelly

and California's Alejandra Barrien-
tos. All have posted times under five

Sophomore Sharon Day leaps
into Satw'day's high jump competi-

Day, a multitalented athlete for
the Mustangs, has a career person-
al-best mark of 5-feet-9 under her
