for nearly 30 years.
Mathis Winkler
DAILY Pl\.OT
I t all began as a temporary arrange-
ment in the spring of 1974.
Flory and Felix Van Beek had
just founded Temple Isaiah in memo-
ry of their son, Ralph, who had died of
cancer at age 16. The young Newport
Beach congregation -Conservative
by denomination -had quickly out-
grown meetings in private homes and
Flory Van Beek managed to convince
Jolks at the brand-new Harbor Christ-
___ ian Church to share their sanctuary.
Now, more than a quarter century
later, the two congregations still call
the same Irvine Avenue building
home. Over the years, they've lent
singers lo each other's choirs, held
common potluck dinners and joined
in Thanksgiving services.

The eternal light will be
presented during a Holocaust

Friday at 8 p.m. at Harbor Christian

When Jewish holidays fall on a
Sunday, the church's 200 members
move out to a park for mass. The
sanctuary's painted glass panels are
neutral to both religions and simply
fill the room with bursts of colorful
light. A large wooden cross gets cov-

into position in front or the altar.

Friday. The lamp -made from a 150·
year-old watchman's lantern that
artist Lynda Nosanov found in the
basement of a house in the JeWl.Sh

remain lit permanently.
While e ternal lights form an
essential part of Roman Catholic
churches as well as many others,
denominations such as Harbor Chris-

emphasize scripture -rarely have
them.
But "it's a nice symbol of God's
presence,• said Rev. Dennis Short, the
church's pastor. And "we wanted to
honor Felix and Aory (Van Beek).
We've enjoyed our relationship.
We're very dose."
Rabbi Marc Rubenstein, who
leads Temple Isaiah's 100-family COO·

building "cburple· -a combination
of church and temple.

defeated 1n a bid for a council
seat in the last election.
Residents don't
welcome annexation
On April 2, the Costa
Mesa City Council demon·
slrated its understanding of
representative government.
In a 3-2 vote, ("City seeks to
annex island,• April 3) the
council majority disregarded
overwhelming opposition to
the annexation of the Santa
Ana Heights community and
refused to release th.is
neighborhood from its
sphere of influence.
Dozens of residents spoke
or showed support for the
release (Monahan stated
over 90% oppose annexation
by Costa Mesa), petitions
have been filed With the
Local Agency Formation
Commission for release, and
residents have clearly stated
they will petition the locaJ
agency to for<'e a vote to
block the annexation.
This input was ignored.
The City Council majority
obviously feels no need to
listen to the people directly
affe<'ted by its actions. If re -
ldents ln the disputed ar eas
needed another reason to
oppose annexation, the

In the story (~Newport to give

Three million dollars last year.
$3.7 m11lion this year and pretty
soon you are talking reaJ money
-money that could be spent for
road repair and bumps in Corona
del Mar, West Newport and on
the Peninsula.
Since Edison has fallen on bard
times, that money could be spent
putting utilities underground to
actuaJly increase our property
values. Has an yone ever figured
out the total dollars spent by
Newport Beach and the county
for promotion of the new El Toro
airport?
The Airport Working Group,
Barbara Uchman, Citizens for
Jobs and Economy, former Mayor
Tom Edwards and Nestande con-
tinually point to the funds spent
by Irvine and the South County
residents. However, those cities
don't need underground utilities
or their roads fixed.

John Wayne Airport and the

I own real estate here, not

Pride of the Coast Tournament Monday.

Pdrk, but d Tory, make that
sophomore nght-hander Ryan
Torrey. was crt>ating a poten-
tial mound revolution Mon-
day ilt Nrwport Harbor H1gh.
Torrey, with only one pre-
vious varsity pitching perfor-
mdnce under his bell,
worked four strong innings ol
relief in the Satlors' 8-4 base-
ball Joss to Sanlcl And Valley
in the consolalion quarterfi-
nals of the Pride of the Coast
Tournament on the Sailors'
diamond.
Displaymg slow and slow-
er variations of cl sweeping
curveball and moong in his
fa stball for effect, Torrey
retired 11 of the 17 hitters he
faced, y1l'ldmg four ruts and
only one run. He struck out
two, wdlk<•d one, let his
defen'>e work for rum and
thoroughly impressed his
codch. Jim Kiefer.
"He did d nice 1ob, • Kiefer

"Dehnilely," K1efC'r said.
"Tht> key thing we're looking
for from Ryan is the ability to
changP speeds dnd throw
strikes. When he does that, he
can be effective.·
Unfortunately for the
Sailors (5-12), Torrey's hero-
ics came after the Fdlcons (3-
14) had built a 7-0 lead, bash-
ing eight hits, including four
doubles and a Gus Navarro
home run, in the first three
innings.
U, -as Kiefer has said, the
Tars are snak e bit during
their current swoon (losing
nme of their last 10), the Fal-
cons were also wondering
when the Baseball gods were
going to smile on them.
"We've Jost nine one-run
games.· Valley Coach Leon
Smith said.
Valley starting pitcher
Juan Garcia entered with an
0-1 record, but he is among
the team's lop hurlers,
according to Smith.
"His arm has been hurting,
so we haven't pitched him a
lot," SmHh said. "But he
showed today what kind of
pitcher he can be.·
Garcia scattered stx hits
through five innings, but
appeared to tire in the hfth,
when Harbor posted its sec-
ond two-run inning to pull to
withm 8-4.
Angel_ Reyes worked two
scoreless innings of relief to
help the Falcons advance to
today's 11 a.m. consolation
semifinal al Costa M esa.
which defeated Santa Ana, 2-
1, Monday.
Newport hosts Santa Ana
(6-13-1) today at 2 p.m. in a
13th-place sem.ifinal.
Down by seven, Cody
Forsythe put the hosts on the
bodrd m the third by pulling a
solo home run over the right-
field fence. Mike Jones fol-
lowed with a double and,
after the second strikeout of
BASEBALL
the inning, Alan Lane lined
an RBI single to left to make it
7-2.
After Jose Rodriguez
homered in the fifth for the
visitors, Forsythe sparked
another Sailor rally with a
line-drive single. Jones and
Donovan Wong followed-With
walks to load the bases and
Forsythe scored on the ensu-
ing double play, the second of
the game for the Falcons.
Jones husUetl home on a wild
pitch to cap the H arbor scor-
ing.
Jones, playing shortstop, ,
also made a difficult catch on
a pop to shallow left. H e
retreated and spun complete-
ly around, seemjngly
corkscrewing himself into the
ground to stab the would-be
bloop single.
Jones was 2 for 2, while
Forsythe was 2 for 3 to spark
the Sailors' offense. Jon Van-
dersloot, C hris Ward and
Cameron Pemstein also had
singles for the hosts, while
senior catcher Garrett Brant
had a stolen base and nailed
a w ould-be Valley base steal-
er at second.
Garcia went 3 for 4 with a
pfilr of doubles to help his
own cause, while Robert
Padilla was also 3 for 4 with a
patr of doubles for the win-
ners.
