I Qiurch, temple come together fOr . eteJ;nal light Temple Isaiah and Harbor Christian Church have shared a building for nearly 30 years. Mathis Winkler DAILY Pl\.OT I t all began as a temporary arrange- ment in the spring of 1974. Flory and Felix Van Beek had just founded Temple Isaiah in memo- ry of their son, Ralph, who had died of cancer at age 16. The young Newport Beach congregation -Conservative by denomination -had quickly out- grown meetings in private homes and Flory Van Beek managed to convince Jolks at the brand-new Harbor Christ- ___ ian Church to share their sanctuary. Now, more than a quarter century later, the two congregations still call the same Irvine Avenue building home. Over the years, they've lent singers lo each other's choirs, held common potluck dinners and joined in Thanksgiving services. Group seeking to retire mortgage • The effort to raise $300,000 is only one of several improvements underway at Someone Cares Soup Kitchen. Stefanie Frith DAllY PILOT COSTA MESA -The Someone Cares Soup Kitchen may not have to worry about its mortgage anymore. The Orange County-based nonprofit Fairshare 502 is in the process of raising $308,000 in order to retire the charity's 30-year mortgage. The soup kitchen currently pays $28,000 a year on its mortgage. It is in its fowth year in the building on 17th Street. ·we are flirting with the $308,000, and we won't guar- antee that we'll make it.• said Fairshare 502 board member Bill Furlow. ·But (a few years ago) we did retire Share Ow Selves· mortgage. When Jewish holidays fall on a Sunday, the church's 200 members move out to a park for mass. The sanctuary's painted glass panels are neutral to both religions and simply fill the room with bursts of colorful light. The lamp -made from a 150· year-old watchman's lantern that artist Lynda Nosanov found in the basement of a house in the JeWl.Sh quarter of Toledo, Spain -will remain lit permanently. While e ternal lights form an essential part of Roman Catholic churches as well as many others, denominations such as Harbor Chris- tian's -(Disciples of Chnst) that emphasize scripture -rarely have them. But "it's a nice symbol of God's presence,• said Rev. Dennis Short, the church's pastor. And "we wanted to honor Felix and Aory (Van Beek). We've enjoyed our relationship. We're very dose." Rabbi Marc Rubenstein, who leads Temple Isaiah's 100-family COO· gregation, said he likes to call the building "cburple· -a combination of church and temple. One day Charlie Caml- lo, the cotirt interpreter and unofficial bridge between the Latino and Anglo popu· lations of Orange County, came into my oUice with two people. One was a big, strap· ping American lnchan, and the other was a pitiful, scrawny Latino woman. She was the man's wlfe and she had a homble, festenng wound on her leg. According to Charlie, the famtly that hved next door to the couple had put a hex on the poor lady, and she was dymg from 1t, which certainly looked to be the case. Not to worry, however. In a 3-2 vote, ("City seeks to annex island,• April 3) the council majority disregarded overwhelming opposition to the annexation of the Santa Ana Heights community and refused to release th.is neighborhood from its sphere of influence. Dozens of residents spoke or showed support for the release (Monahan stated over 90% oppose annexation by Costa Mesa), petitions have been filed With the Local Agency Formation Commission for release, and residents have clearly stated they will petition the locaJ agency to for<'e a vote to block the annexation. N ot only should they cut down the boat parade route, but why does it have to be a whole week? H's like a week from hell for those of us that have to fight boat parade traffic coming home from work. Since Edison has fallen on bard times, that money could be spent putting utilities underground to actuaJly increase our property values. Has an yone ever figured out the total dollars spent by Newport Beach and the county for promotion of the new El Toro airport? The Airport Working Group, Barbara Uchman, Citizens for Jobs and Economy, former Mayor Tom Edwards and Nestande con- tinually point to the funds spent by Irvine and the South County residents. "I've been looking forward to this start,· said Costelloe, who faced the minimum in four t.nn.ings and would have done the same in the first, had rt not been for a two-put error. "(Costelloe has) pitched well all year,• said Mesa Coach Kirk Bauermeister, who has tried to spot Costelloe in relJef, to gwe hitters a different look. He was effective today, but l'f!l not real swprised.• Costelloe came in with 14 strikeouts, though his ERA (6.66) was skewed by one dis- astrous inning against Mater Dei. The aforementioned two- out error, followed by a walk and an RBI double by John Madrid, put Costelloe and the ~gs in an early 1-0 hot~. But that didn't last long. / Wlth Costelloe settling in for one-two-three frames in the second, third and fourth, the Mustangs scored single runs in the se<:ond and tlurd to halt a two-game losing skid. The Mustangs ( 10-6-1 ), wtm had also lost five of their last six, got their second-inning spark from a one-out single by junior Billy Halverson.
