Ufreaks havoc
on Blue Beet
A fter the article
announcing that Sid's
Steakhouse was
being closed by the Health
Department, Newport's old-
ti.mers inundated the Blue
Beet with irate phone calls.
Me,ssages criticized the man-
agement for "lettirtg tQeir
restaurant go to hell."
The reason? The place
used to be called Sid's Blue
Beet, after the same owner as
the Steakhouse.
But current Blue Beet ·
owner Steve Lewis assures
locals that they have •a fabu-
lous reputation with the
Health Department" and that
there's no cause for' concern
that it will be closing any
time soon.
The Health Department
decided to legally close the
Steakhouse after it found 35
violations -some of which
could be considered rude
table conversation. However,
Sid Soffer, the ever-eccentric

Las Vegas. plans to put up a

He's scheduled a hearing
with the department on May
15.
COLOR BUND7
When researchers
dumped 22 gallons of dye
into the mouth of the Santa
Ana River May l, they were
hoping to learn something
about the water currents in
the area.
But the study raised an
entirely different quesbon:
what color was the dye?
The Pilot called it "red,"
•pink" and "magenta." The ·
Orange County Register
decided it was "bright pink"
and the Los Angeles limes
went with "magenta."
Study organizers, on the
other hand, looked at things
differently. They called it
"reddish-orange."
Ah, science! Where would
we be without its precision?
FUTURE FASHION PlATE OR
PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR7
At last week's Newport
Beach City Council meeting,
a group of UC Irvine students
dropped in as part of their
urban planning course. One
of the more colorfully dressed
young men stood up to intro-
duce bis classmates and chat
with council members.
Mayor John Noyes
quipped that the loudly
dressed fellow might have a
future job as head of public
works. Looking over at the
current head of public works,
Don Webb, who was dressed
in a spring ensemble with a
bright floral tie and check·
ered-print jacket -council
members and audjence
roared with laughter.

THE HARBOR COLUMN
Think about your
boat slip first
T he boat industry appears to
be slipping.
When I say slipping, I
don't mean sliding. In fact, the
monthly rental slips fees are esca-
lating to oftentimes costing boat
owners more than their monthly
boat payment. ~
It's all a function of supply and
demand. Larger slips accommodat-
ing vessels 35 feet to 40 feet and
above are difficult to locate. For ves-
sels in the 50-foot and above lengths,
slips are almost impossible to find.
There are other issues-associat-
ed with slip rental fees that must
be taken into consideration. The
condition of the docks and pilings;
trash facilities; pump-out station
accessibility; location of your slip
from the parking lot and if ade-
quate, overnight parking privileges
are available.

represent approximately 20 slips
in Newport Harbor.
"It's definitely an issue of supp
and demand. As long as market
conditions continue as.they have, I
don't see any reduction in slip
fees,· Nicoletti said.
The slips that Bellport controls
can run from $11 a foot up to as
much as $29.10 a foot. The largest
vessel Bellport accommodates in
Newport Harbor is 140-feet in
length. Larger vessels are usually
docked in the Udo Shipyard area;
however, the Bayshore Marina has
9 slips 83-feet in length as well.
Private dock space such as the Bal-
boa Bay Club can also accommo-
date large vessels. If you're think-
ing about buying a boat of any
length, you must take into consid-
eration where you are going to
-dock, especially if it's a larger boat.
ln addition to finding a slip, you
must take into consideration other
issues. inexperienced boaters
should balance their experience
with the easy or not-so-easy acces-
sibility of docking. Other items are:
wind conditions at your marina;
speed of currents; width of your
slip vs. beam of the boat; location
of the slip; relationship to bridges
and rocks; shoal; and the position-
ing of your neighbors boat and the
difficulty in maneuvering around
other bows or swim steps.
Take each of these things into
consideration before you leave the
dock -in fact, before you rent a
slip.
As in any activity or sport that
requires a degree of expertise, you
should attend seamanship, sdfety
and navigation classes prior to
OP4;rating a boat.

The design of the tug is drawn
from boats originally used by log-
ging companies, said Jesse Salem,
the owner of the shipyard.
•When the timber industry cuts
down fir trees, they use these boats
to undo the logjams,• he said.
Craig's plans for the tug, Salem
believes, have more to do with

But most importantly, Mcintosh
said, the new owner plans to fly a

"He's got some Scottish blood
in him,• Mcintosh noted.
And so does the boat.

KIND OF A DRAG
One of the likely causes of dragging
brakes Ind lost b(lting powe;r is
contaminated brake fluid. This
si1uation usually occurs as a resuJI
of openings around rubber seals or
tiny breaks in flexible brak~ hoses
thal allow moisture to mix wilh
brake fluid. This is a pocenlially
damaging scenario because brake
fluid is highly hygroscopic,
meaning ii absorbs moisture Crom
the atmosphere. When Ibis occurs.
it breaks down. and ilS abilicy to
prevent corrosion is compr0mised
along with its boiling point and
lubricating properties. A lowered
boiling point can result in a. serious
loss of braking power during
repeated quick stops or prolonged
use while descending steep gr6des.
To avert the$eproblems, brake fluid
should be replaced at regular
inltfVals.
HINT: "Dragging brakes" refers to.
brakes that remain partially applied
even though pressure is no Ion.get
beina exerted on the brake pedal.

Part ot what makes the

Access bas never been an
easy question for Cameo
Shores. The community has
three paths leading from its
quiet streets down to the
beach, but they are locked
and usable only by residents.
Though the beaches in
front of Cameo shores are
technically public from the
mean high tide line seaward,
the only way for most people
to reach them is by walking
from Corona del Mar or Crys-

At times over the years,
the commission ha.a pushed
Cameo residents to allow

fully defended its three-year title at
the Southern California Clean and

In the eight categories, the Sailors
took home five first-place honors in
the eight-school competition, much to
the delight of assistant coach and
weightlifting coordinator Mike Bar-
gas.
•Are guys are all pretty disciplined
and it the bard work which paid
off, "Bargas said. "Our weight room is
always busy with not only football
players, but athletes from all the dif-
ferent sports. We're never closed."
Alan Saenz, who was a middle
linebacker for the Division VI champi-
on Sailors last year, defended his title
at the 231-pound plµs class, lifting 315
pounds and shattering the old compe-

tition record. He· won the class last
year with a 265-pound mark.
Another record fell in the under
230-pound class when junior Andy
Rankin lifted 290 pounds, bettertng
the old mark of 285.
One doesn't expect a quarterback
to be in the category of heavy lifter,
but Sailor QB Chris Manderino broke
that stereotype by winning the under
210-pound class with a 275-pound lift.
•vou don't expect to see a quarter-
-back to be able to lilt as much as he
can,"Bargas said. "Thal was very nice
to see."
The Tars were 1·2 in the under
187-class. Leading the way was junior
Ryan Ortega (253 pounds), with
sophomore David Marshall as the
runner-up (2.15 pounds).
In the under-125 class, freshman
David Christiansen took the top spot
with a 121-pound mark.
Freshman Bobby Jacklin turned in
a strong effort in the under-137 class,
taking sec;ond with a marl( of 160

Sanchez was third in the under-154
class with a 210-pound mark.
