We asked freshmen at

They will

By common agreement,
one of the greatest speeches

But fairgrounds offidals, begin·

the JSUbsidies, raising weekly fees
to about $1,600, Bailey-Findley
said.
"That's what puts us out of busi-
ness,• Oxl~y said. He odded that
the high staffing costs, in addition
to the niflch-needed building
upgrades, could scare away any
other potential long-term tenants
of the arena.
"They're already pricing the
one-time events out of the venue,•
he said. "Now they're even scaring
away a time-honored tradition.•
However, tradition may not be
enough to keep the Speedway
bikes running at the fairgrounds.
"It's part of our tradition and his·
tory, • said Steven Beazley, deputy
general manager of the fairgrounds.

sion's concerns about the potential
for broken pieces damaging boats

bllity that it could attract marine life
into polluted waters, said Lisa
''Il-anltley, a deputy attorney gener-
al who has represented the com-
mission in some of its legal negotia-
tions.
For his part, Streichenberger
CQtitends that the real design flaws
.are in the structure of the Coastal
Commission. He filed a complaint
in California Superior-Court against
the agency earlier this· year, alleg,
ing, among other thipgs, that its
institutional structwe is unconsti-
tutional and that it exceeds its Own
jurisdiction.
Representativ~ of the Coastal
Commission, who were meeting
Monday, could not be reached for
comment.~
So far, Streichenberger has been
on the losing side of the legal battles.
In April, a Superior Court judge
overturned his initial request for an
injunction to stop today's hearing.
But Streichenberger said he thinks
his case against the structure of. the
Coastal Commission is persuasive.
And even if he loses the decision
today, he said he expects his law-
suit -elements of which may
come before the courts as soon as
next month -to send shock waves
through the institution.

freshman softball pitcher Stephanie
Ciralli is going to be all right. In a
few days.
While she is presently nursing a
swollen face and will be on the
bench for the Sailors' final game of
the season Friday against visiting
Aliso Niguel, there seems to be an
excellent chance that by the time
her birthday rolls around in June,
memories of a brutal scene at Friday

CHINO HILLS -Newport Har-

has done it all year long with the
quality depth factor en route to the
Sea View League championship,
and Monday they chose the same
formula to capture the CIF South
Coast Regional, one of eight CIF
titles which were up for grabs.
Playing at El Prado Country Club,
senior Scott Tippett led the way with
. a 71, two strokes off medalist honors,
and second overall, as the Sailors'
posted a 10-over 370.
Surro\indlng Tippett were sopho-

Concarinon and Mitt;h,Johns.
Kush, who started the day off
with four bogeys, rallied with
· birdies on all four Par· 5s on the
course to finish with a 73.
Also with a 73 was Allanach,
backed up by Olson (76) and Con-
cannon (77). Johns had a nonscor-

The Sailors were there with 21
yea.rs of experience on the dub and
it paid off handsomely for Coach
Jim Warren, who watched the
championship be claimed by New-
port Harbor for the first time ever.
"It was really exciting for the
kids," said the happy Warren.
Also qualifying for the 16"-tearn
Southern California Championships
at Saticoy CC in Ventura Thursday
was Sea View League rival Wood-

a 376.
It was the third time this" season

to Newport Harbor.
Nine strokes further down the
ladder was a nooquallfying San
