said the new, higher-density develop-
ments, sprouting ti)<e dandelions here as
the real estate market continues to boom,
are also flooding residential streets with ,

Because many of the complexes are

difficult to chat with neighbors on the
way to the mailbox or while watenng the

Perlect waves turned perfectly foul Tuesday as
raw sewage poured into the ocean a t the mouth of
the Santa Ana River, forcing a beach closure from the
Talbert channel lo Orange Street in Newport Beach.

Smoke-Free Kids, Inc .. a foundation
that educates childre n about the
danger of cigarettes.

Phyllis Johnson is
retiring after 23 years.

only planned on teaching
kindergarten for a year while
she waited for a high school
home' economics position to
become available.
Now, 23 years later, Phyllis
Johnson plans to retire from a
long and memorable career
as a kindergarten teacher at
Prince of Peace Christian
School in Costa Mesa.
•This is what the Lord
wanted me to do,• she said.
•1 think kindergarten is the
most important grade
because you're setting their
standards and giving them a
love of sc:llool and learning."
In the process, her stu-
dents have grown to love her
as well. One of tier favorite
stories is of 5-year-old Daniel
Shammas, a student of hers
this year who walked up to
her and announced, •I am
going to many you. Then I
will have a beautiful wife."

son as a teacher.
Stephanie .Smith is a
freshman at OCC. Her mem-
ory or kindergarten is dim
after 12 Y.ears, but she does
remember how it felt to be in
Johnson's class.
·1 don't remember too
much, but she was always
very .warm and caring,•
Smith said. •She loved all or
her students so much, we all
felt like a family. She was
very dedicated to her teach -
ing."
That dedication has yet to
wain. At 71, Johnson is retir-
ing but will not stop working.
Her plans for retirement are
to begin working as a consul-
tant, evaluating children's
perceptual motor develop-
ment. .

rect problems with their
motor skills. For instance, she
said, many students have
problems with their visual
perception, which affects
their ability to read and learn.

with Linda Howe, who eval-
uates children with learning
difficulties in Chino. Johnson
will begin evaluating chil-
dren at Prince of Peace and

"I'm excited, but a tittle bit
nervous,• she said. "But I
don't want to run out of

around Prince of Peace, she

dredging permit
Newport Beech's eftorts
to have its blanket dredging
permit reinstated were met
with mixed results Tuesday
at the California Coastal
Commission meeting in
Santa Rosa, said Deputy
City Manager Dave Kitt.
Although some of the
· • city's requests w ere granted
at the meeting, Kiff said the
commission refused to relax
its standard& on the sand
content permitted in dredge
spoils that could be dumped
on city beaches.
The co~ion's posi-
tion means Newport Beach
will be forced to engage in
extensive chemical and
bioassay testing of the soil in
the bay, K.ilf said. The
process could take two to
three months and cost
between $40,000 and
$60,000.
If the tests show that the
soil is sufficiently dean, Kill
said the commission may be
willing to relax its standards
on acceptable silt levels on
beach dumping of dredge
spoils.

Middle College High
For those interested in
learning more about the
unique high school experi-
ence offered at OCC's Middle
College High School, an open
house has been scheduled for
Tuesday.
Now in its fourth year, the
high school is open to juniors
and seniors throughout
Orange County. The program
is a collaborative effort
between OCC and the New-
port-Mesa Unified School Dis-
trict. It is designed for high-
potentiaJ. underachieving
high school students.
Classes for the program are
offered on the OCC campus.
Applications are currently
being accepted for the 2000-
01 school year. The open
house will begin at 7 p.m. in
OCC's student center lounge.

Coast College's men's and
women's track and field team
qualified several of its athletes for
Saturday's Southern California
Prellms at Santa Barbara. A couple
of OCC standouts also got them-
selves into the sta te champi-
onships, May 18-20 at Bakersfield.
OCC'S' women's team is led by
Costa Mesa p roduct and sopho-
more Zoila Gomez. On Saturday,
she set the school and conference
record in the 10,000-meter run
with a 36:27.
The standings in the 10,000
was a fam.Uiar one for OCC as
Bernice Carbajal was second to
teammate Gomez. Both qualified
for the Southern C&llfomia finals.
The Pirates' Heether Shurtleff ran
a 4:50 in the t,500 to get in the
SoCal tinall, along with Gomez.
