shallow waters
I t's a very shallow subject when
we speak of sailing in Newport
· Harbor. In fact, in some cases it's
not a very deep subject at all. One
of the first steps in boating safety is tO understand everything there is to
know about your vessel. Beam,
length, overhang, through-hulls and
especially your draft. However,
there are some other issues that
need to be addressed as well.
It's very common to read about a
boat running aground on the coral ·
reefs in the South Seas. but did you
know we have the same problem
right here in Newport Harbor?

Fisherman Den Tran waits for a fish to bite during his Friday afternoon stop at a secluded fishing spot near Westcllff in
Newport Beach.·
Capt. Marty Kasules, of the
Orange County Sheriffs Department
and our local Harbor Master, said,
•we have some very dangerous
. areas in Newport, where it's very
shallow and the reports of boats run-
ning aground has become inore fre-· .LHOoking witli tlie . ti -es ·-quen .
Ka$tles mentioned that the area
in front of the bow of the Newport
Nautical Museum and extending
toward the lip of Linda Island is
probably our most dangerous area.
"During low tide there are spots that
become as shallow as four feet in
some places. These spots are dilti-
rult to·ldentify as the shifting sand

"The tide is too low,· he not-

Later, as the water pushed up
through the hot afternoon, Tran
said the fishing would be good.
When the currents chdnge dra-

plentiful.
It's not much of a beach. A

it attracts mostly fishermen and

Jn the past, the city of Newport
Beach had an open-ended, 10-year
dredging permit and when certain
areas became dangerous, they sim-
ply contracted for a dredge to dear
the area. But because the permit
expired last August, the California
Coastal Commission must approve
any further dredging.
Deputy City Manager Dave Kiff

attempt to secure the much-needed

is hoped the situation is resolved
and once again, dredging permits
will be issued.

efforts allowed both to move on to
Saturday's DlVlSIOn m finals at Cerri-

For the third time in four meet-
ings, Mesa's Hulliger bested Pacific
Coast League rival and friend Fenton
in the shot put. Hulliger was the top
qualifier with a mark of 55-1, while
Fenton had the fourth-best mark (53-
9 112).
·Robert was very happy with his
. shot put,• Costa Mesa Coach John
Camey said. "Thal 55-1 is a good
mark."
On the flip side, Fenton, bound for
Yale to play football, got the better of
Hulliger for the thjrd time in four
meets in the discus. Fenton launched
a 150-7, good for the fourth seed.
Hulliger was nght behind hlm with a
149-8, the sixth-best mark.
"He hasn't been consistent in the
discus all year,• Camey said of Hul-
llger. "I le worked out on that e~ent
and he did well. To qualify for two
events 1s big for hlm. •
Another two-time qualifier was
CdM senior Josh Yelsey. He won his
heat in the 1,600 meters handily and
nabbed the No. 2 seed with a time of
4:26.29. In the 800, Yelsey fought off
Loyola's Harry Williams to win the
heat. His time of 1 :58.80 makes him

Another athlete who made a

9:39.19 in the 3,200, a whopping 1'2

with Ghebrekidus.

Mesa senior Greg Stewart made
up for a disappointing 100 with a
blistering 200, an event in which he
placed sixth at last year's Division ill
finals. Stewart ran a 22.28 to win his
heat, good enoagh for the No. 3
seed.
Nevertheless, Stewart was disap-
pointed at not getting the school
record (21.6), as well as failing to
qualify in the 100, an event.in which
he had Orange County's third-fastest
time this year, 10.83. He placed 12th
at the 'prelims with an 11,16. Only the
top nine advance.
"I just didn't feel good today,• be
said. "I really wanted the school
record in the 200, but I fell a little
short. I'll just have to try next week."
Estancia's 1\"avis Chandler, who
participated in three events, quali-
fied for the finals in the high jump.
He was one of eight athletes to jump
a 6-2. That was the top mark in the
prelims and a personal record for
Chandler.
Estancia freshman Humberto
Rojas qualified as the second alter-
nate in the 1,600. His time of 4:30.~2

BERRY.··
Newport Harbor
•Charlie, along with his brother, Bob, were
gridiron icons during the 1950s for the Sailors.
Don Cantrell
D AILY PILOT
C harlie Berry, one illli
of the sharp, 1111111
electrifying
fullbacks for Newport Harbor
High in the early days, remains
a humble and dedicated ath-
le te in the minds of many fans
and gridmates who
became acquainted with his
admirable play from 1953-55.
Berry, a youn g brother of a
highly recognized and honored
1947-49 fullback named Bob,
was constantly
remindlul of bis
brother all through
prep days on the field
of play.
It ls no surprise that
the brothers would
both become Daily
Pilot Sports Hall of
Fame rs.
Their athletic
ship offer from UCLA, which
was being coached by Henry
(Red) Sanders.
Unfortunately, Charlie, in
time, became disappointed by
the lack of role models in
college. He did not become~.
fan of Sanders, either.
Although he played
considerably his first two yea'rs,
hls interest eventually turned
toward rugby and he enjoyed
that sport.
• Reflecting back, Charlie
recalled his fun years, in foot-
ball with one-time Harbor Area
Boys' Club sports dllec-
tor Rod MacMillian,
Harbor High assistant
Don Burns and head
coach Al Irwin. He still
speak s highly of them.
To this d ay, he
extends warm salutes to
old gridmates like
George Schu1tt, Joe Del-
gado, John Hopkins,
Dave Tamura, Larry records were basically Charlie Berry
the same in Harbor Harper, Glenn Thomas
and Bob Milum. days. Bob carried the ball 211
times and gained 1,294 yards,
while C harlie carried the ball
197 tlmes and chalked up
1,197 yards.
Each wound up with 6.1
yards per carry over a period of
three years.
Only the late All-CIP Harold
Sbeflin could outmatch the
Berry brothers from years back
with a 6.2 mark per carry.
Charlie was polished and
shining in his three Harbor
years on the turf, but the one
game where he totally shocked
rivals was the clash against
Fullerton when be ran for three
touchdowns and booted four
conversion points in the fall of
1955.
It gave Harbor ·a 28-6 victo-
ry, the flrlt win over Fullerton
since UH7 when hl1 brother,
Bob, helped blank the defend-
ing champs, 1·0.

After UCLA, the call came
for an enlistment with the Air
Force where he became an
officer. He later turned to ser-
vice in the Peace Corps and
served in Asia for a period of
time.
His career finally turned to
teaching school lo Hawaii and
he became very interested in
traveling to Europe to climb
mountains.
He also loves touring Europe
most every summer and study-
ing a wide range of architec-
ture and many works that have
been remodeled since World
War JI destruction.
Charlie, in addition, has
made his mark over the years
in the annual Honolulu

Morse also got the best time in
the 800 (2:20.08). But her most
impressive race was the one she
didn't win, the 200. •
The Princeton-bound senior
turned tn a 24.80 in that event,
easily her PR and the best mark
:in Orange County this year. And
:it's a mark that challenges CdM's
.school record. Morse won her
:heat, just holding off Lakiste :Barkus of Ce:nitos. She had the

• "I'm really happy about my
:24.80, • Morse said.
: She capped off her day by

:the 1,600 relay with a sizzling

: "Those are the events I live

-situation to see what 1 had to do.•
: CdM's squad of Morse, Jenny • ...
Oammim, Becky Cwnmins and
Jaycee Mahler, won with the top
qualifytng time of 4:00.60.
Mahler, who ltightly sliced into
the Mooarcb's lead as the third
leg, was a late replacement for
Karolina Ubuda, who is out with
a toe Injury. Thft Mustangs' 1,600 relay
team of Day, Julie Kroening, LiSa
Dunn and Ashley Schafer, was
third in its beat behind CdM and
Mater Oei with a 4:06.59. The
Mustang quartet posted the sev~
enth-best time overall.
The day's ~st comeback,
belonged to Mesa senio,r Kroen-
ing. In the 100 low hurdles, she
. tripped and fell on the first h\lr-
dle and came in second-to-Jpst in
her heat
But in her next race, the 300
low hurdles, Kroening ran with a
vengeance and clocked a school-
record 47.16, holding off Mahler
at the finish line to win the heat.
Kroening qualified with the
fourth-best time while Mahler's
47.49, close to a PR, made her the

No. 6 seed.
One unexpected move came
from CdM junior Jenny Cum-
mins, wbo decided not to run the
400 despite posting tbe fowth-
best time coming into the pre-
bms. Cwnmin$ decided to con-
centrate on the 800 and turned in
a 2:27.12, making her the fifth
seed.
Other final qualifiers include
CdM sophomore Season Meser-
vey, who ls the No. 3 seed after
running an 11 :41.39 in the 3,200.
CdM junior Diane H~feld
fought through an illness to gtal:}
the 1\inth and, final qualifying
spot in the 1,600 with a time of
5:16.10.
Sea King sophomore Allison
Brawner was one of the many
tied with a 5-3 in the fiigh jump.
With CdM putting 9 of 14 pos-
sible qualifiers in the finals, and
with county powerhouse Santa

unexpectedly scral~ed, CdM
Coach Bill Sumner is eyeing the
