Many of the grieving teens

_Setting record. straight -on traffic law
I am wri~g to set the record
straight regarding inaccurate
comments recently made in a
column regarding the Newport
Harbor Area Chamber of Com-
merce and our recent public infor-
mation program regarding the
Newport Beach Traffic Phasing
Ordinance.
The Newport Beach lfaffic
Phasing Ordinance is considered
the toughest traffic ordinance in,.
the county. In fact, some people
(including some chamber mem-
bers) feel the ordinance is an
unnecessary extra layer of local
government that is unduly bur-
densome on business and econom-
ic interests.

The basic

residents -with 83 % indicating
support for the TI'alfic Phasing

Wlth that report, our public infor-

local residen(s who took the time
to provide their thoughts about the

the Coutal Commtpion would
be worried about this habitat
attracting fish to a polluted area
or injuring fish.
I've never heard anyone
express that same concern over
Ute many artificial .reefs con-
structed by the Fish and Game
Department in the Newport
Beach and Huntington Beach
areas, nor the outfall pipe from
the River Jetty in Newport Beach.
FRANK ROYCE

Since the inception of Marine
Forests Society the Coastal Com-
mission bas been obstructionist in
its dealings with the project. This
is a worthwhile endeavor that
should be encouraged -it's no
different re.a.Uy thuJ abalone or
salmon farming. The Coastal
Commission should give Marine
Forests all the help it possibly
can. I think it is a rotten shame to
remove the artifidal reef.

With all the damage that has
been done to the ocean through-

I believe that the Coastal

I think that, although this

I disagree with the Costal
Commission's wanting to remove
the reef.
The government should be
fostering and encouraging
restoration of the coastline.
DAVID ALLEN HUGHES

The Coastal Commission has
way too much power and no
accountability. This ruling is non-
sense, like many others. These
people need to be held personal-

You need to dig deeper into
the lssue regarding the.Marine
Forests Society's artificial reef off
Balboa. On first glance, this pro-
ject may seem environmentally
positive, but in reality it was so
poorly constructed that it does
create an environmental and
safety hazard, as the Coastal
Commission stated.
It was constructed Without a
permit from the commission,
although the commission bas per-
mitted other artificial reefs which
are Mfe and environmentally
friendly. Try asking Strelchen-
berger to provide an escort for an
unbiased underwater photogra-
pher to take photographs (not a

I agree with the Coastal Com-
mission's decision to make the
Marine Forests Society move its
artificial reef from the ocean for
many reasons.
1) They never did any study to
determine if this project would
actually be beneficial or harmful
to the environment.
2) Rubber and plastic are not
naturally occurring products
They break down into hannful
chemicals, slowly over time.
3) I viewed bis video and it
was very one-sided. He referred
to the barren sandy ocean bottom
~s a desert, meaning not produc-
tive.
However, sandy bottoms are
habitat for many marine animals,
so tn fact, he took away an inter-
tidal area where sea li!e would
grow and live. Deserts a re actual-
ly productive areas.
4) Finally, he did not get per-
mission to do this. If they allow
the •reet" to stey, it will set a
precedence to let people discud
anything they want int°"the
ocean. We do enough dumping in
our oceans and this needs to be
controlled. Just like other parks,
preserves, reserves, refuges, etc.,
we need to llmlt the impact of
humans· because we end up lov-
ing these areas to death. We
need to take responsibtllty for the
products we manufacture (tires,
plastics, etc.) and recycle and
reduce our consumption. We are
the most wasteful society on
earth.
Dumping ln the ocean abould
not be allowed. In fact be ahould
be fined. The earth ii for every-
one to inhabit, not Just for bis
IOdety to do wbatnw tbey
pleue. Thet Ii m~. ..,..,.

I love the way the Daily Pilot fishes out what's happening in city hall ,
with the school board and on the waterfront -oftentimes swimming
against the tide. The stories the Daily Pilot journalists land day in
and day out are whoppers. And that's no fish story.
