Newport Beach Mayor
John Noyes urged the board
not give in to quick fixes fo r
the airport dilemma.
"lbis is a good time to look
at all available options. Your
leadership will woduce th e
best solution,• Noyes said.
Costa Mesa Council·
woman Heather Somers
spoke after Noyes. She
pressed the board to leave
John Wayne Airport as it is.
Some officials from other
counties opposed the idea of
building an airport in a differ·
ent county -one o1 the pro-
posed alternatives to El Toro.
They argued that Orange
County must take respons1bil·
ity for its needs and not to
shove the burden on a anolh·
er county.
"If you don't put it in El
Toro, then find another place
in Orange County," said El
Segundo Mayor Mike Gor·
don .
However, Jim Morley,
executive director of the San
Bernardino International Air-
port Authority, said their air·
port -also a former Marine
Corps base -would wel-
come any passenger spillover.
"We don't see ourselves
replacing Bl Toro, but we can
be a part of the regional solu-
tion,• Morley said.
About an hour before the
public bearing, airport oppo·
nents chanted •No Jets" and

around the courtyard at coun-

drove here from Sacramento and
Sen JO&e to attend this afternoon's
memorial service at Newport Har-
bor High School. Stewart was
scheduled to walk in cap and
gown there next month.
Perdue waited Tuesday after·
noon for Sonja and Dariel William
-Stewart's mother and stepfather
-to return from th~ morgue. He
sat in his black car in front of th~
ranch·style home the family had
recently moved into. Through
headphones, he listened to a CD of
himself, an aspiring hip-bop artist,
which he had just recorded. His
transparent beige eyes stared
through the windshield at the
mountains ahead.
Perdue remembered one night,
banging a rhytlun on the kitchen
table while he, his uncle and Stew-
art each took turns spitting out
rhymes.
"I was trying to get him on my
next CD.• said Perdue, who
recently' moved to Los Angeles
from San Jose. "He was really tal·
ented . .Brother or not, 1 wouldn't
put somebody on my CD who
couldn't rap.•
At 12:30 p.m .. Sonja and Dariel
William, along with Stewart's
uncle, Mike Wallace, drove up the
driveway. Sonja Stewart walked
into another room to be alone. The
three men sat on stools in the living
room and discussed how much
Stewart had matured since moving
away from a tough San Jose neigh-
borhood in eighth grade.
"When Andre first started at
Newport Harbor, he was quiet and
not sociable,• said Dariel William,
who helped Stewart with his
weight training, and who himself
has boulder-sized biceps. •It was-
n't like the ghetto anymore. It was
hard for him to find anyone who
was not dean-cut.•

I just wanted to thank you ror all the smiles
that you gave-me. I wasn't in your rude of
friends. I was just a silly freshman, but you always
had a special smile for me. Your smile warmed
my heart like a sunbeam.
I will never forget the day we met. You saw me
on tbe football field after cheer practice and
asked your sister, Karen, to introduce us. I was so
shocked. Me, a very shy, goofy, little freshman.
Maybe it was my shyness. I guess we had that in
common. But, I was like; "No way, why would

You shook my band and saJd, "Whaz up, l<lnll.
it is so nice to meet you." .Of course, l was speech-
less. From that moment, our paths crossed every
day, and every day I looked forward to that one
moment you would always say, "Hey, Kimi, wbaz
up?" Your smile always made my day shine.
It didn't matter if you were with your friends or
alone. you always took the time out to notice me
and give me that special smile of fOurs. Your
sweetnes8 gave me so much inspfration and con·
fidence. You told me after I didn't make cheer not
to let my shyness stop me. "You've got the moves,
keep trying. Don't give up."
I will try.
School's hard enough, but recently there have
beert days when I've felt that I had no Criends.
Those were the days our paths always seemed to
magically cross. Sometimes your smile was the
only one I got all day. There was one day that l
.,, felt my world had been-lipped in two: You smiled
and told me not to look so lonely, that it would be
better. Thanks for being my friend. 'Thanks for
being my Angel. Thanks for being in my life.
I'll never forget, Friday, May 12. You walked
past me and smiled and told me, "Goodbye,
Kimi· I never thought it would be the last time. l
will never forget the outfit you wore. Your blue
baggy jeans, a blue top with red sleeves with
white wrtting on it. You were always so cute how
you wore your bright tops and vests, but it was
your crazy shoes that l loved so much.
I will never forget your smile. anjt your spirit

A former Ocean View High and

Working in the caddie program at

Ernst enjoyed playing privileges for

turning pro. -
A three-year starter under Ocean
View basketball coach Jim Harris
(1988 through '90) before picking up
the clubs on a full-lime basis, Ernst
had only played Newport Beach
Country Club three times prior to bis
victory Monday at the Newport Beach

Ernst carded a 5-under-pa.r 65 and
won $2,000 cash, plus a watch worth
$4,000, according to Jeff Parker,
Director of Operations for the event's
host -the Newport Harbor Area

1n last year's Newport Beach ·open,

On the par-3 13, Ernst's shot off the
