. On Friday, while occupy-

Senior Center's luncheon hon-
oring a d<nell of its most trea-
sured volunteers, my mind
wandered a bit But not nec-
essarily off the topic.
I thought of my grand-
mother, Velma Potter, who
will be marking her 93rd year
on the planet this month. Vel-
ma is a second-generation .
Californian. She bails, on her.
mother's side, from the fabled
Vital Reche·family, a rugged
and spirited band or frontiers-
men who trundled in covered
wagons across the West from
Permsylvania and gave birth
to the northern San Diego
County community of Fall-
brook in 1869. And while her
Byron de Arokal
BETWEEN THE LINES
aging frame has long since
failed her, Velma's-keen mem-
ory of my family's frontier her-
itage remains a refreshing
spring of wisdom and pride
for me.
My mind raced north to
SeaWe too. There, in a nurs-
ing home, rests Catherine Lee
in the twilight o! her life. Mrs.
Lee, as she is a legend known
by thousands 0£ high school
students who reaped the
priceless benefit of her teach-
ing, bas long since given up
her keen and nimble mind to
the ravages of Alzheimer's
disease. But back in 1977,
when she was a witty and
demanding instructor of
advanced composition and
British literature at El Modena
High School in Orange, she
drilled, encouraged and
praised a young lad to "pur-
sue the noble art of writing.•
He did. And to Mrs. Lee be
owes much, induding uncom-
promising respect.
· I thought. as well. of my
father-in-law, Edmwid
Jachacz, the son of Polish
immigrants. Now in his late
70s, Ed is to me an icon of the
•greatest generation.• Here's
a guy who left his family and
his home in the later stages of
World War II. In the prtrne of
his youth, he shipped off.to a
small island call~ Tiqian ••
where he flew aboard the
mighty B-29 ·superforts, • the
heavy bombers that lowered
the curtain on the Japanese in
the Pacific Theater.
Then my thoughts settled
upon my own parents, them-
selves seniOr citizens but still
~ordinarily active in pub-
lic education, criminal justice
and the theater. Both of my
folks devoted themselves to
. the education and character
development of their own
children and 'of thousands
more during their careers in
public education. In so doing,
they sacrificed much but pre-
pared many.
Do I wander? Hardly.
'l'tlese senior citizens in my
life are no different than the
500 senior citizens who each
day look forward to their visits
to the Costa Mesa Senior
Center. These are folks who
fought wars and took bullets
for our freedom. They crawled
through the indignity of the
Great Depression, scratched
out a living, raised a family.
Yet as time bas hurtled for-
ward in their lives, they have
often found them.selves aban-
doned, without fqends or
companionship. Our toss·
away culture is more content
to warehouse them instead of
engage them. We're just too
busy swilling our lattes and
managing our portfolios.
All of which is why the
Costa Mesa Senior Center is a
beacon in our conununity.
Here these great folks who
paved the road before us find
friendship and conversation,
education and entertainment.
They can find a hot meal or a
ride to the doctor's office.
They learn how to operate
computers and manage their
finances. They organize and
take trips together. They're
just trying to squeeze every
last ounce of life that they can.
Now if we were to spend a
moment noodling with some
appreciation on what these
things would mean to us in
the sunset of our lives land it's
coming), it is a wonder why
each year the Costa Mesa
Senior' Center bas to crawt
through the trenches and over
barbed wire to fund its operil·
tlons. Nevertheless, it does.
Aviva Goelman, the cen-
ter's executive director, l'WlS
herself nearly ragged chasing
down grants and corporate
contributions.Goelxnan
lawiched the senior center's
capital campaign in Novem-
ber, annolµlcing an ambitious
targe~ of $100,000. As yt>u
read this, $65,000 has come in
with just a month left in the
campa.ign. That's not good
enough in my book.
So as I scanned the weath-
ered but knowing faces of
those seniors attending the
volunteers luncheon Friday -
the folks who find sanctuary
and meaning at the Costa
Mesa Senior Center -I
guessed at what contributions
they made to our country and
our CQmmunity throughout
their lives. "We owe these
fol.ks,· I remember thinking.
So do you. Now, go mail
that envelope.

A tour de force
.
Newport Harbor High School's annual home and garden
event features more than a little something for everyone.
D•Mtte Goulet
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT-~ -It was no run
of the mill peek into the lives of the
rich and famous at this year's Home
and Garden Tour.
Through each and every doorway,
there was a conversation piece. ,
From the •birds nest• house
packed with priceless baubles, trin-
kets and artwork to the equestrian
estate that was straight out of Africa,
there was something for everyone.
Newport Harbor High School's
fourth annual event, which is the
school's main fund-raiser, gave the
t ,200 visitors it catered to more than
a little something to talk about.
Many started the tour spellbound
by three local artists who sat in a fra-
grant garden and worked their magic
on canvas.
plastic pears, even huge white ceram-
ic pears.
A next stop of the tour was a
dynamic modem homf! in Dover
Shores that transported visitors to a
warm paradise with rich wood, dark
color5 and bold lines. The interior liv·
ing space seemed . to Oow outdoors
easily to a large, cushioned seating
area surroundiOg a stone fire p1t and
along a saltwater pool.
While some may prefer the Pablo
Picasso that hung in one of the homes
or the 1941 signed Diego Rivera in
another, this home boasted four hand-
colored Chagall etchings.

In an effort to break up the crowds,
o thers began at the classic
Mediterranean cottage on Udo Isle.
Soft lines and muted colors made this
a peaceful retreat. A plethora of prints
featuring pears began a theme that
seemed to run through all of the
homes.
If visitors got no further than the
lunch venue, the equestrian ranch,
they got an eyeful. From the breath-
taking view of horses through the
glass wall behind a giant fireplace to
the startling discovery of the many
creatures that once roamed Africa, it
was a sight to see.
The squeamish folk didn't quite
know where to step amid the zebra,
lion and black bear pelts. But the
most strik ing feature was the
stuffed white Siberian tiger atop
the grartd piano.

IRVINE -The Newport Harbor
High boys track and field team put
itseli in the right position to claim its
-second straight Sea View League
title on Friday following Tuesday's
strong performances at the league
preliminaries.
"It's still comes down to each run-
ner at each event, but from what I
saw (Tuesday), I was pretty pleased,·
Newport Coach Sim Barry said. ·aur goal for today to each athlete
was to get into the league finals or to
run a personal best. U it all worked
out, both would happen. Universally,
the team was able to do that.·
Perhaps no other race showed the
true colors of the Sailors better than
the 800-meter run. where four New-
port runners qualified for Friday's
competition.
Senior John Peschelt ran the
fastest time among all competitors
with a 1:57 .03, while Chris McMillen
clocked a personal-best 1 :57.41 ,
good enough for third. Alec Urtu
(seventh, 2:05.15) and Jesus Santana
(eightlt, 2:05.34) also earned a lane
assignment for Friday.
•John and Chris really ran w~ll
today,• Barry said. "We wanted
John to work on a strong final 250,
which he did, and it was especially
nice to see Chris hit a lifetime best
out there."
Three Sailors, Adam Kerns
(23.31), Richard Weber (23.60} and
Dede Johnson (23.66) placed 4-5-6
-in the 200, giving Newport three
runners for the finals.
Johnson (53.35) was edged by
teammate Daniel Fletcher (53.21) lil
the 400, but the twosome still man-
aged to crack the top six.
Kerns will pull double duty on
Friday after qualifying for the 100
witb a 11.65, the third-fastest time of
the prelims.
•Adam is really running well at
this point,· Bany said. "He's nght
where we want him to be.·
On the girls' side, sophomore
sprinter Amy Burlingham put
together two strong times in the 100
(12.89) and 200 (25.67) for the Tars.
"Her 200 time was great because
she looked really relaxed out there,"
Newport Coach Eric 1Weit said.
•she's got great form and she's only
going to get better and better. One
thing about her is she's extremely
competitive.•
Burlingha.m's time 1n the 100 was
slightly off the pace of Woodtndge's
Michelle Sanford (12.67). "I think it
will come down to how Amy starts
that race,• lWeit said. •u she can
stay even with Michelle 1n the first
15 yards or so, she'll win the race.•
Patty Vasquez picked a good time
for a personal best in the 400, clock-
ing a 1:01.52, good enough for sixth
place.
"She's a senior and she's worked
very hard for us all year long,• 1\veit
said. •it's great seeing that hard
work pay off.•
Six-time league champion Amber
Steen kept rolling along tts she
cruised to a qualifying tiine of
2:21.92 in the 800.
Valerie Day qualified for the 100
hurdles (17 .78) and 300 hurdles
(50.46). Tuammate Eliz.abetb Clayton
{51.32) willjoinDay in the 300 hurdles.
A strong showing by the Sailors
was slightly dampened when U was
learned junior Nadja Topalovic
strained her left hamstring du.ring
warmups before her 300 hurdles race.
"It's been bugging her for a while
and she said she felt a little pull,•
