When Costa Mesa. Mayor
Gary Monahan was 14 years
old, he dreamed of owning his
own restaurant. He imagined
it to be like his family parties
on St1 Pabick's Day, with lots
of food, music and merriment.
Monahan used to be bar-
tender at those parties, serv-1
ing Irish coffee and other spir-
ited drinks to his family and
their guests. Twenty-six years
later, Monahan is still a bar-
tender. But next month, be
will realize his dream.
On June 30, Monahan is
opening a steakhouse named
Skosh Monahan's. The name /
derives from his nickname J
"skosh, • or "little portion,•
given lo him by his former
patrons at Henry n' Harry's
Goat Hill Tavern.
The new eatery, at 2000
Newport Boulevard, is a joint
venture with 15 partners who
have created a corporation,
Sandlot Restaurants, Inc., of
which Monahan ls president.
"It's not the love of cook-
ing. It's the good atmosphere
and providing a good time for
people,• said Monahan, who
will be managing the day-to-
day operations of Skosh
Monahan's.

Oaeldialfigu9roa
DAllY Pit.OT •
The sound took Newport
Beach by storm in the
1930s, when legendary
bandleaders like Glenn Miller,
Benny Goodman, Count Basie
and the Dorsey brothers intro-
d uced the world to a new
musical era -as well as
un1que dance trends.
As tastes changed over the
years, however, the music died
down. But the big-band era
will return to Newp0rt-Mesa
on Stinday, when radio station
Kl.AC-AM (570) kicks off the
summer with a benefit dance.
Kl.AC's morning personali-
ties Charlie Tuna, Fran Tunno
and Bill Nesbitt will host the
four-hour event al the Double-
tree Hotel in Costa Mesa. Doc
Anello and h.iS Orchestra will
play swing a nd big-band
music from the 1930s, '40s and
'50s.
The event started 14 years
ago, said Kl.AC's Kent Bag-
dasar. 1l1.is IS the third year the
Glendale station has held the
event at the Doubletree Hotel.
•Believe it or not, there are
a lot of listeners in this area
who view it as a novelty--
dressing up and playing the
part,• he said. "It's not often
that you can dance to the
sound of a live big band."
Bagdasar said the event
drew more than 1,600 people
last year.
"I think it's going to be an
Radio station Kl..A~-AM will host

more people continue to come
back each time,· he said.
Although admission is free,
organizers are asking every-
one to bring a new children's
book, whidrwiltbe"'donated-n>
the Children 's Hospital of
Orange County.
For the occasion, the hotel
has special plans for its newly
remodeled ballroom, which,
Bagdasar said, features one of
the biggest dance floors in
Orange County.
The ballroom will be deco-
rated' with balloons and paper
streamers to match the room's
gold and green decor. And the
orchestra will be dressed in
black-and-white tuxedos.
And, of course, there's the
music. .
Anello will perform with a
nine-piece orchestra, which
features pianist Fred Carroll,
drummer Richard Watson,
bass player Larry Walters, Jack
Poster and Brian Bettger on
trumpets, Dave Woodley on
trombone, lead alto saxophon-
ist Kirsten Edkins, Jason
Freese on tenor saxophone
and Jim Hahn on baritobe sax-
ophone.
The veteran bandleader
will also accompany vocalist
Luretta McCray.
Anello played in the 1950s
and '60s with Eartha {Gt and
teen idols Bobb}' Rydell, John-
ny Ray and Frankie Avalon.
He continues to record swing
music--last year, he released
• Jumpin Jive,• which features
a 15-piece orchestra, on
Orange oun y s exton
Records.
He said he will perform sev-
eral standards such as •La Vie
En Rose," "In the Mood," "Llt-
Ue Brown Jug• and •April in
Paris."
For Anello, performing
these standards is a way to
preserve musical and Ameri-
can history. But just as tastes
are ever-changing, Anello said
swing 11\usiC constantly rein-
vents itself.
"It's wonderful music that
has been around for over 60
years now,• he said. •1t has
seen many rebirths, especially
with the recent recordings by
the Brian Setzer Orchestra and
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
Anello said he keeps an eye
on musical trends and incorpo-
rates them in his perfor-
mances.
"We play many swing
tunes from the swing era, but I
guess you can say we updated
them,• he said. "We dressed
them up into more contempo-
rary arrangements using the
same instruments, but giving
it a more contemporary rhyth-
mic feel."
One of those songs is a Russ
Columbo tune called •Prisoner
of Love,• which was originally
recorded as a ballad. Anello
said he changed the tempo
and made it a swing number.
"The song is very sweet
and on the beat for musicians,.
but now it has a whole differ-
ent flavor,• he said, letting out
a ch -::.,-
•But some songs are meant
to remain in their original
sQl!cture, the way they were
when they were first per-
formed,• Anello said, citing the
powerhouse swing classic
"Sing Sing Sing,• which is on
Sunday's playlist.
Anello also has a deep
appreciation for Newport
Beach's musical history. Long
before Sugar Ray and Dick
Dale. Newport Beach was a
mecca for swing.
"The Balboa Pavilion is
where Stan Kenton and Glenn
Miller endorsed big-band
m4ffic in front of hundreds of
people every night,• he said.
·And that's where the Balboa
Hop originated. Back then,
people all over the country
knew how to do the Balboa
Hop.•
The pavilion also became
the site of dance marathons,
where couples performed rou-
tines with high kicks and over-
the-shoulder Wts.
1bat's the kind of atmos-
phere Anello is hoping for this
weekend.

the country, but our public
schools are crumbling
before our eyes. The oppo-
nents of Measure A have
asked some good, hard
questions.
•How did we come to
this pretty pass in the first
place?,; for instance, is a
really good one. Answe rs?
Anyone? No? Maybe later.
And please, come up with
something more creative
than "Prop. 13."

sons to vote •yes."
I've seen a lot of bond
initiatives come and go, and
this is one of the best craft-
ed I've ever seen. It is shot
through with safeguards,
checks and balances to
make sure the money goes
where it's supposed to go.
I've known many of the
community volunteers who
are working as advocates,
and could serve as members
of the oversight committees,
for a long time. They a re
taking this issue, and their
roles, very seriously. They
are putting their re putations
on the line and will not hes-
itate to yank the Newport-
Meia Unified School Dis-
trict board's chain real hard
if there are any deviations
~ from the program as
promised.
And now, a secret.
Do you know what my
real interest in all this is? It's
not leaky roo(s or cracking
plaster or Bubba the Rat, as
embanauing as all that
may be. Whe n it comes t.o

summer and lhe rest or the
year.
In Newport Beach, the
fishermen fished all year,
selling their catch to John
Horman, who put the fish in
ice-filled tubs and sent them
to Los Angeles on the Pacific
· the Grand
Central Market.
Balboa Island was a mud
flat that disappeared entire-
ly at high tide, summer or
winter.
Corona del Mar, or "The
Palisades" as we then called
it, was a few square miles of
unsold lots over which Irvine
Ranch cattle grazed, and
those cattle didn't care much
about the seasons. But in
Balboa, it was summer, and
the place shut down.
The weather was usually
good during the summer,
which was what brought ~o
many people down here, but
we-natives k¥w a secret
It was the month after
"summer" that was really the
best. September meant warm
days, warm water, guaran-
teed -and no crowds.
When I became a judge
and took the first vacation in
m y life, of course I took lhe
month of September, and
what happened? It rained
every day. lf you live on some
glamorous South Pacific
island, there are two seasons
-the wet season and the
dry season.
The latter is something of
a misnomer. During the dry
season, it just doesn't rain as
much as it does during the
wet season -50 inches dur-
ing the wet season, 20 inches
during the dry. That's what it
felt like. I was living on the
island at the time and spent
the whole month in Buster
C reel '
for September.
Afler that experience, I
took my vacation during the
summer like everyone else.
Going back to the song
"Summertime,• the verse
concludes, •and your Ma is
good-looking.• What is she
lhe rest of the year -ugly? It
must be tough lo have an
ugly mothe r, eve n U she's
only ugly nine months out or

NORWALK -A year after she won
the girls 3,200 meters at the CIF South-
ern Section Masters Meet, Newport Har-
bor High junior Amber Steen returns Fri-
day at Cerritos College to attempt to
repeat that feat. The top five in each
event advance to next week's CIF State
preliminaries except for the 3,200, where
the top five go directly to the state finals.
The first race is scheduled for 6 p.m.,
while the first field event is at 4:30 p.m.
Steen was the runner-up at this year's
CIF Division n finals. She ran the eighth-
fastest qualifying time for the Masters,
but Steen owns Orange County's best
mark with a 10:45.85 and she is one of the
runners expected to be in the state finals.
Steen will be one of the four runners
competing in the 1,600 before the 3,200.
She is the Division U champion and the
ninth quahlier In that event. Steen also
owns the county's fastest lime with a
4:58.38. There were only two sub-5:00
Maste~ qualifying times in her field.
1\vo seniors, Newport Harbor's Trevor
Jones and Corona del Mar's Liz Morse
go into the Masters as favorites to win a
state title.
Jones set this yedr's best time in state
for the boys 300 intermediate hurdles
when he won the Division TI crown with
a 37 .08. That time beat his old mark of
37.16. The 300 was thrown for a loop
when Jones' top cha llenger, Lltllerock
High's Marcus Raines, scratched after he
was arrested on a murder charge.
That means Raines, the No. 2 qualifier,
is also out of the 110 high hW'dles, which
leaves that event to Jones and Katella's
KeMy Vmh. Jones now has the second-
fastest qualifying time, a 14.27. He was
second in Division ll behind Vmh.
He is also the anchor for Newport's
1,600 boys relay team. The Sailors' team
of Jones, John Peschelt, Dan Moyer and
Richard Weber easily won the Division 11
title and posted the seventh-fastest qual-
ifying time.
Morse is only the No. 7 qualifier for
the girls 800 afte r winning the Division
LU crown ln 2:14.14 , but she has the most
impressive resume in the Masters field.
Morse has yet to lose an 800 this year
and her personal best of 2:09.40 at Arca-
dia was the fastest in the nation this year,
though it has since been surpassed by
San Lorenzo Valley's Alejandra Barrien-

behind teammate Morse at the Division m finals was a big part in the Sea Kings'

CdM's girls 1,600 relay team of
Morse, Cummins, Becky C ummins and
Jaycee Mahler won the Division m title
with a 3:55.34, which shattered its own

Costa Mesa freshman Sharon Day won

best 5-6, which equaled her own school
record That was tied for the third-best
mark among Masters qualifiers. Day also
has a solid chance of extending her first

seventh-best qualifier. Her personal best

SOUTH WEST NOR'llf EAST 2• .... 20 .... 2• .... •• .... 6• ........ ....
Opening lead; King or 0
'The winning line involves no mag-
ical ability. II is simply spotting the
danger to the contra,ct.
SOuth's two-club opening bid was
an anificial game force and two di.a·
moods was ncg111ive. 'The rest of the
auction was natural, with the jump to
four 1padcs showing a minimum of
four trumps but denying any ace,
kins. void or ~inglecon oo the &ide.
1llae is no problem makina the alall\
if lrWnps aro 2-2, but how do you
handle the nonnaJ 3· I break?
West led the king o( diamonds and
dcc:lwer won pelforce. Since an even tru~ division com6ined with clubs
splitung no worse than 4-2 would guarantee tho slam. declarer correctly
i:uhed the ICC and kiflg of sfJlldes nexL When West showed out, how
would you cootinue7
ObV10UsJy, clubs had to be ~~ llshcld. so South played off the '1ICC and king of that suit, then ruffed a
club with dummy's jack-of spades.
East's discard of a heart meant that
another club ruff in dummy would be
futile. Bast would overruff and
declarer would be stranded with a
heart loser. Declarer found the winning line in
quick time. RelUming to hand with
the ace of heans, declarer led a founh•
club and discarded a hean from the
table!
'The defenders had no counter. As
long as Eut originally held at least
four hearts, declarer could win any return and ruff a hean in dummy for
the fulfilling trick. It would then be
an easy maucr to enter the closed
hand with a diamond ruff, draw the
outstanding ttump and claim the rest
of the tricks.
