Lately. there has been a lot of media attention. especially in Hunt- ington Beach, on the water quality of the ocean and har- bor due to urban runoff pol- lution and the new cleanup measures being introduced to help. Well, a few years ago, I volunteered as the narrator and on-camera host for an educational video titled •What Starts al the Drain, Feeds the Harbor When It Rains.• It was sent to every elementary school in Orange County for their outdoor sci- ence programs. The video was produced for the New- port Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce Marine Com- mittee and paid for by the generous donations of res,i~ dents, businesses and the city of Newport Beach. I worked with Costa ,, Mesa-based Your Video Pro- ductions, which produced the video for less than half the cost, and we knew the video was on the leading edge to water-qtiality ed·uca- tion. We were delighted to learn that the video received two industry awards for. excellence. Educating the youth was our goal, as we knew it is often too late for most adults. This was too apparent looking at this year's attendance at Clean Harbor Day. I stopped by to help out at this year's 21st annual Clean Harbor Day, held at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum on April 28. The weather was a little drizzly, but what surprised me was the lack of support from the community, as far as boat participation and local volun- teers. Still, it was nice to see students from Irvine, which is an upstream city. As always, Wes Annand from Newport Beach was there coordinating the boats, and one of the boats was Naut-a-Care's, operated by Al Baltazar and nm West. You may have seen photos in the newspapers of the shop- ping cart encased in barna- cles, which the Naut-a-Care team recovered from the depths of a bay beach. I hope that next year the com- munity rallies around this event that not only cleans up the harbor but also educates everyone on ways to help stop urban runol1j<>llution. • • • To get in the mood for boating, an one bad to do was walk through the New- port Boat Show that just fin. ished at \he Dunes. I attend Mike Whitehead THE HARBOR COLUMN many boat shows on the West Coast. and I think this is one of the best by far, with the huge onshore vendor dis- play and the amount of actu- al boats in the water. When I first entered the big tent, I saw Eric Hovland -a local licensed captain who works for Pompanette -who let me try out one of the new captain seats. I want one for my living room. I walked a little farther, where I spoke with Bob Jimenez, who represents M09'Jairs and Pettit Paint. Bob is an expert in boat fin- ish care and has been on my Boathouse TV show. I had to get on the docks to feel at bome and there l ran into Ed Arnold and Jack Means, who showed me the new Carver Yachts. I can attest that Carver is well swt- ed for entertaining and ocean travel, as I have taken Carvers around Point Con- ception in very rough condi- tions. As I was leaving the show, I spoke with Dole Cole, past commodore of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, and it is always a pleasure speak- ing with an excellent sailor. In closing, most of you know that the Sea Base's renovation plans were con- tinued by the Newport Beach Planning Commission. Looks like the commissioners lacked vital site-plan infor- mation in their pa~ets and two of them were absent. What an excellent enhance- ment to the Sea Base it would be, and there has been great support from the community to bring the facil- ity up to the standards for maintaining such high-quali- ty programs. Also, I would like to thank the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts for present- ing me with the "Baden Powell Award" for my volun- teer service for the Sea Base. May ts also time for the Kentucky Derby, the Indi· anapolis 500 and there's even a three-day weekend for Memorial Day. And of course, summer is just around the comer. But ever since May of 1999, convicted killer Steven Allan Abrams has ensured that my favorite month now conjures up a somber, even · honible memory -the painful images of a play· ground tragedy. that resulted in the deatB of two innocent children, Sierra Soto and . Brandon Wiener, and the Tony Dodero FROM1ffE NEWSROOM· injuries of several others. I bring this up not so much as to baJp on the anniversary of that awful moment in local history, but as a warning that recent news events reminds me that innocence is still under attack. Take for instance the recen\ news that someone has been placing razor blades and shards of broken glass onto park playgrounds and play equipment. Then there was the news that someone shot a blue heron, an endangered water· fowl that makes its home in the Back Bay, leaving its recently hatched babies motherless. Here in the newsroom, we ask the same questions as you. •Who would do such a thing?• The aJ).IWer is it's some- one like Abrams. Someon e who wants to destroy lnno- cence. As a human, I find that incredibly sad; as a father I find it terrifying. Children and animals are defenseless, often unable to protect themselves or cry for help when it's needed. "Nostalgia is so powerful sound and sight." STREET CONTINUED FROM 1 Others, like Peter Naghavi, Lransportation services manager for the city, want to see the street widened. In March, Nagbavi said that even if the business members don't want six lanes, he does. For certain council members, though, there are stl.ll questions to be answered. · "I have some questions that will hopefully be answered (at the meetingj," Councilwoman Linda Dixon said Sunday. •Are six lanes going to split Costa Mesa? Does Plan E mean that we will (expand the street} at a later date? How strongly would the approval be affected by fundiQg'?" Councilman Gary Monahan said he still doesn't know how he ls going to vote at tonight's meeting, but said what no one wants to admit ls that both plans still only involve four lanes. It's just that Plan E pro- vides the opportunity to receive Measure M funding, he said. wThere's a lot of misinfonna- tion out there that (says Plan E) will tear up parking and more," Monahan said Sunday. "But the only difference is where the sidewalks are built They (the Merchants Assn. and Ad Hoc Committee) are against sb: lanes. This ls tow. The fear that we will eventual- ly construct six lanes is not realistic. I don't see that hap- pening." Daily Pilot LOOK CONTINUED FROM 1 "It ts going to be a very short, fa.st and intense campaign," said the 54-year-old JohnsOn a founding member of the mod- erate Republican group the New Mojority, which includes notable Newport-Mesa beavywiights George Argyros, Don Bren, Gary Hunt, Roger Kirwan and Henry Samuell. Johnson is right to hope for a quick race, largely ~use a fast, crowded campaign is his best hope for victory, said State Sen. Dick Ackennall (R·Fullerton). · ~ennan is ainon?.: a host of other hope·· fuls tnterested in Cox s seal Those muWng over a race include. Assemblyman Bill Campbell (R-Villa Park), Supervisor Todd Spitzer, former Assemblywoman Marilyn ,Brewei: Newport Beach philanthropist John Crean. 'state Sen. Ross Johnson (R-lrvine), Newport Beach pflysic:i.an Don Udall and Newport Beach Realtor Bill Cote. · Santa Ana City Councilman Brett Franklin also told the Pilot that he is consid- ering a run, while former Rep. Jim Rogan has pulled out as a possible candid.ate. Given all the unknowns, "I think it's a little premature" to be setting up commit- tees, Ackerman said. wl think its going to happen later, rather than sooner." U the election were held off until next March. the district will have been realigned according to new Census figures and what it might look like is anybody's guess. A Slll&U &OP CHOICE Also by that point, the list of hopefuls will have been pared down, with one can- didate bavmg the support of the county Republican Party, Ackerman said. Eileen Padberg, an Irvine-based politi- cal consultant with ties to Brewer, agreed that. the county party, led by Chairman Tom Fuentes, will choose its own candi- date - a conservative "hard-liner." That choice, she added, will be easier now that_ Rogan -who could call up strong political support fro~ the nation's capitol -is out of the running. -But at the same time, she said, Cox's dis-trict does not match that political stance. w1 thinlc the district is a moderate dis- trict," Padberg said. "It's highly educated and pretty diverse." That could be an advantage for John- son, who as a member of the New Majori- ty has pushed the county party to focus less on divisive issues, such as abortion, and more on what the group says are the par- ty's strengths and attraction to voters: fiscal responsibility and pro-business policies. However, Johnson will have to state clear positions on issues beyond that New Majority manna if be wants to s~ Cox, Padberg said. Women's rights, environmen- tal concerns and education, for instance, are all issues important to the districl And certainly he'll have to address the El Toro airport, which likely will be a dri- ving force in tlie election, especially if it is held off until March when voters also could be voting-on the South County-led propos- al for a park at the former Marine base. Johnson, whose ties to New Majority member and major El Toro proponent George Argyros could leave him with an uphill climb to get votes from lrvine and other southern parts of the district., is stress- ing that the airport issue is one for the coun- ty to work out. not the federal government. At the same time, however, he is quick to blast all sides for spending too much tax- payer money and not resolving the issue in a "statesmanlike" way. 110 ACE UP TIEii SLllYI One possible wild card in this race is not expected to be an ace: an endorsement from Cox. Most of those thinking of running, while of course wanting Cox's public anoint- ment, .consider him too shrewd to come out ·for a particular candidate. It is even unclear whether, as a judge, Cox could legally offer his endorsement. In the end, without a cohesive Republi- can county party putting forth one candi· date and without Cox choosing a succes· sor, only one thing seems certain: It will be a bruising battle. f'fi5~ • Fajitas • Mochaca • Chorizo •Salads LIVEMExlCAN MUSIC Mattress Outlet Store ..
