Around this time of year, most 15-

I thought about that recently when I was

The .voice. and the sniffing grew louder,

and there are mothers' rooms

an emphasis on biblical discov-

growth. Communion is cele-
brated four times during the
year. These Communion events
ar4i' highlighted as a biblical
portrayal and enactment of a
scriptural story. Along with
Communion, members practice
the ordinance of humility, or
versational, and sometimes
interactive, style. His messages
are meant to facilitate an
understanding of how scripture
applies to our lives.
• UPCOMING SERMON: In the
weeks to come, Reynolds will
be speaking on the grace of the
Cross, which brings the justi.fi-

grace of the Holy Spirit, by
which God re-creates His
image in each individual and
gives them the power to
change lives, which brings
sanctification.

visitors and members gather

In addition to the benp.
near Talbert Avenue, Costa
Mesa will get a second barri-
er just below Ad~Avenue
in the Greenville-Banning
Channel, a storm channel
that runs parallel to the San-
ta Ana River.
In all, Skorpanicb said,
about 2.5 million gallons of
runoff per day will be divert-
ed to th~ Orange County
SanitaUon District's treat:
ment plants. fhe treated
water will then be released
from a pipe five miles out' to
sea, along with treated
sewage.
The scope of the county's
program -tackling runoff
at sites miles inland -
draws attention to the com-
plex problem of dealing with
pollution in an area that has
such a large. watershed, said

Brown said he was

Diversion aJone can not

The diversion program

Real estate sales arc
extremely complex tnnsactions
which involve large sums of
money and the largest single
asset most individuals will ever
own. Since the possibilities for
misunderstandings are great,
professional Realtors wort.: hard
to ensure that the transaction

clear communication between
the buyers and the sell ers and
other Realtors. Most of the
breakdowns in real es tate

More than merchandise is exchanged at garage sales
M y )dds love garage
sales. It~ so much
mor~ than the
exchange of dollars (or
cents) for merchandise.
Garage sales are opportuni-
ties for them to practice
neqotiatlon techniques, frat-
ernize with neighbors, hone
math skills and learn ab&ut
commerce in their own
. frontyards. Memories from
garage sales mark stages in
my children's lives.
Over the years they have
passed thiough many
garage sale mind-sets. We
started with rampant accu-
lt\ulation. My oldest, Annie,
· is an Alex P. Keaton. She
scares me. She is the type of
person who could sell ice.to
t.Pe Eskimos. As a mother,
this is cause to worry, but
on the other hand, I know
she will be fine in the big
world.
Annie once sold to one of
the nelghbors their own
newspaper from their own
frontyard. They gladly paid
her for il Now, I'm sure the
Jobnsons were just being sup-
portive of her efforts, but what
worries me is that she thought
to do it in the first place.
So, to Annie, a garage sale
was 'an opportunity: to accu-
mulate great toy wealth, lo
exercise her negotiation tac-.
tics and to schmooze with the~
adults on the street. This
quest for enonnous toy wealth
rubbed off onto the other two

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
children and soon we were
awasp in others' discards.
Dusty stuffed animals,
games without all of the
pieces and Happy Meal
treasures were added to our
own cache of marginal
•stuff. w At some point my
patience abruptly ran out
.and I put an official morato-
rium on purchasing th~
neighbors' junk.
Thus ended the Age of
Accumulation. Not to be sti-
fled, Annie and her siblings ,
moved onto the next oppor-
twiity: rampant sales of
rampant accumulation. The
thought occurred to the kids
tnat their items might be of
value to children whose
mothers were nicer than
theirs. I was supportive of
the closet cleaning and they.
had an opportunity to expe-
rience capitalism.
This took an unfortunate
twist at some point, howev-
er, when they would
attempt to sell their newly
acquired birthday gifts for a
fraction of their worth, just
to make a buck. Many
arguments of •but, it's mine
to sell" ended with another
moratorium, and the Age of
Sales officially passed.
The next stage was a
valuable one. Instead of
planning garage sales of our
own, Annie and crew would
help other; neighbors plan
theirs. Annie would act as
director of sales, Breck
would be the sheriff, and
Mary Rose was added·for
curb appeal.
They were ~e roving
band of garage sale orga-. ~zers, quick.l)')movin9 up
the ladder of garage sale
success. They started cat a
flat hourly rate.
But my Alex Fl, Keaton
quickly discover~ that the
world of commissions was
far more appealing. She
would negotiate a com.mis-
sion structure days in
adyance, help to price the
items (and since she was on
commission, you can imag-
ine what the pricing struc-
ture waS' like), and make
posters to advertise the
great opportunities awaiting
the lucky attendees. ·
Annie woilld arrive very
early on the day of the
garage sale, for she discov-
ered quickly that the really
~rious buyers arrive at
least an hour before the sale

She learned that everyone
likes a bargain and more
likely than not, the price
needed to be somewhat ftex-
ible. She learned that the
guy in the Mercedes station
wagon was tbe toughest sell
of all and the lady in the tur-
ban would stake out the
house days in advance, look-
ing for a peek into the
garage or carports.
I think valuable lessons
were learned in sociology,
psychology, math and ero,-
nomics. In addition, my chil-
dren got to know thei:F neigh-
bors; their neighborhood and
appreciated their parents'
efforts to earn a living.
Now that the kids are ii bit
older and less likely to hire
themselves out we often
laugh and reminisce about
our •Garage Sale Days.•
No one bas replaced Annie
and crew on the street, yet we
see some potential. Maybe the
next stage for my cbildre_n will
be 'Itainers of the Younger
Generation. imparting knowl-
edge and hoping for the future
entrepreneurs' success.
Perhaps it's not about the
accumulation of goods, but
perhaps the gathering of
life skills that makes a
garage sale so worthwhile.

The Daily Pilot is great at l:lnco~ering all the wedge issues around town,
wtiether they're at city hall, the school board or at the end of the peninsula.
And the newspaper also preserves the hometown feel of our community.

And judging from the national acclaim Neme~ and her dancers have won for
their interpretive studies of the dance form in recent years, she's off to a good start.
Nemetk, who is on Orange Coast College's dance faculty, oversees several inde-

Nemeth, however, says tonight's show is different frpm her other productions.

Keeping the faith ~and the f ashiC?rz -for religious center
I t ii somewhat challeng-
ing to report on a social
event with a religious
purpose. As a columnist
res.,.Wble to a diverse
public readership, it might
seem a violation of that rela-
tionship to report on the true
purpose of such an event
without either endorsing or
· denying the real essence of
tbe gathering.
On the other band, to
avoid the subject and only
provide a surface view also .
would be irresponsible.
• Such chaj.lenges are more
acutely felt by reporters cov-
ering the news beat. Their
objectivity is far more crucial
to accurate and fair journal-
ism.
The columnist is afforded
tbe opportunity to speak his
or her point of view. I am
truly grateful for this privi-
lege. I take it seriously, even
if my story is innocuous.
Today's reporting is not.
Last week, I attended the
22nd annual Gentlemen's
Haberdashery fashion show
and luncheon al the New-
port Beach Marriott Hotel,
Fashion Island. The event
benefits the Heart of Jesus
Retreat Center in Santa ·
Ana, owned and operated
by the Sisters of The Sacred
Heart.
It has been sponsored for
many years by Catholic
community activists, indud-
ing the late Tom Riley and
his wile, Em.ma Jane, and
current chairs Tony and
Mellndi\ Molso.
In 1977, when the idea
was first introduced, the Sis-
ters of The Sacred Heart
earned $15,000 to support
the ir retreat center. This
year, the to~may exceed
$1 80,()()().....ffi th\t words of
Slste r Jane Stafford, Superi-
r G neral to the Society
Devoted to The Sacred

been raised over the years
for the children to know that
there is a God who loves
them.•
l have attended this event
for many of the eight years l
have been assigned to the
Newport-Mesa social beat. It
is always a gathering with
an emphasis on fellowship,
• especially meaningful to
members of the.Roman -
Catholic faith.
This r~ar, because of the
efforts of the-Molsos, Melin-
da Ftt.cb.-Steve lrela.ntl,--and ·
all of the sisters, the event
was significantly inspira-
tional.
Stafford set the tone with
• her greeting, in which she
implor~d the audience to
recognize the import of this
Jubilee Year of Christ.
•What is in the heart of
God ... in the mind of .
God?" she asked the crowd
of about 500 guests. Many
in attendance were of the
Catholic faith, but there
were people of other reli-
gions also in attendance,
supporting friendships and
business and social bonds in
the community.
•ne scripture tells us
that Jesus referred to God as
Father, for God is truly a
parent whose love for his
children never stops,•
Stalford said, adding that
loving and devoted parent-
ing is perhaps as dose to
reflecting God's love as
human bein9s may.aspire.

truth.
So, in this Jubilee Year of
Chnstianity, Christian and
non-Christian alike may
share in the blessing of
God's mercy. And m the
words of Sister Jane
Stafford, open your hearts
cl.Dd minds as wide as you
may possibly fathom, for
God is so big, so unfath-
omab~, his mercy so grand
that there is no telling wh~t
may result if we all ask for
the world. May it be a world
of peace for all men
our Jubilee Year, God is lis-
tening, so don't waste your
prayers on petty things,• she
said. "Ask God for the
world. Ask God for peace on
earth, for miracles of health
and healing. Ask God for
pure joy, for renewed spirit,
for peace in the midst of
pain. Ask bjg, my friends.•
Left to right. Sister Jane Stafford, Rick Evans of the· Irvine
Co., and wife Susan and son Fred at the benefit for the
Heart of J esus Retreat Center. Bob O'Hill of O'HUrPart-
ners Inc. takes to the runway.
The handsome men 111 the

Indeed. Ask big, and why
not? We have so much to
learn as human beings. Are
we any doser to God than
the persecuted early Chris-
tians of the first century?
Are we any closer to God
than tbe ancient Jews? Or
the spiritUal MuslimS, Bud-
dhists or even Scientologists
of today?
The Old Testament teach-
es that God owes man noth-
ing. No explanation, no
favor, no acknowledgment.
Man, instead. owes every-
thing to God. It is an axiom
that has been adapted from
the Jewish scripture into the
Christian New.Testament
and that of other faiths.
The extrapolation of
meaning in the message is
( . that man serves God dunng
his lifetime by honoring Him
with God-like actions on
Earth through honorable
reJatlons with his fellow
man.
Yes, we still have much to
learn, so we must listen
when Stafford implores to
ask big. We must ask for
guidance, strength and
inspiration to follow our
hearts to.be people~who are
just and loving. And we can
begin tbls process with our-
selves, our families, our chil-
dren.
This is the message of the
sisterhood, and the purpose
of the center they have built
in the name of Jesus.
Unfortunately, the name
· of Jesus has far too often
been a call to bloodshed

' throughout history. Stafford
asked all in attendance to
write down their giant
prayer on a slip of paper
that the sisters would collect
and post on a massive
prayer board in their home
to be used as a catalyst to
prayer for the rest of the
Jubilee year. My prayer was
simple: May God grant man
the grace of tolerance for all
men, regardless of their
faith, in the absence of their
faith, so that the human race
may finally understand that
the message of J esus (or
Jeshua) was love. forgive-
ness and mercy.
Love is our greatest gift
from God, the Fa ther of all
children. We need to focus
on its power to heal. So
while it is the primary pur-
pose of the Sisters of The
Sacred Heart to bring dul-
dren to J esus, let us in thlS.

AT ISSUE: The Times Orange Ceunty

Newport Beach Mayor John Noyes was once
wanted on criminal kidnapping charges for
taking his children away from .his ex-wife, who
had legal custody.

I was saddened and
appalled to read the story
about John Noyes in the
paper this morning. As
chair of the Orange
County Commission of
Women when it was for-
merly in place, we often
heard of stories of moth-
ers who were trying to
find their children with
little money and a lot of
sadness.
I don't know that Noyes
realizes that his story is
not about the wellare of
the daughters but about
being selfish and dDgry·
and not really thinking
about the daughters. It's a
sad commentary that
someoDe would try to tell
other people in the city
how to live and act when
he h<lS such a disgraceful
element in his past. And
I'm sure he was well able
to convince the girts that
their mother showd not
be part of their life with
his lifestyle and hls con-
tinuing command over
thelI llves. It's really a
pretty sad tale.

This should tell all of
us. as many incidents in
the past should have, that
many candidates who are
elected for publlc omce
that run on the platform
of law and order and
reducing crime should be
taken with a grain of salt.
This apphes as well to
those individuals among
us who espouse extreme
and devout religious
beliefs. Why is it in
today's world that the
. ones we are most likely
to endorse are just the
opposite of what we real-
ly want? Maybe we
should look closer and
behind what our media,
and their sound bites, are
feeding --i..

CYPRESS -Bragging rights come no bigger

tonight's CIF Southern Section Division I boys
volleyball final, set for 7 o'clock at Cypress Col-

Even those who won't share college destina-

Newport Harbor senior setter Kent Turner
shared part of his high school experience with his

"It's a dream matchup, • said Newport senior
middle blocker Dustin Illingworth, who sat out
his junior year. "It's the perfect way to end the
