There is a kind ol under-• ground society in these' parts that fasdn4tes itself with the intrigue U:iat occasionally swirls around that great opaque dtadel of real estate otherwise recog- nized as the Irvine Co. Crack- ing the mystery that cloaks Donald Bren's machinery has a certain llll'e to it. If you need a picture, it's sort of like milling outside of Willy Wonlca's chocolate factory hoping for a glimpse of Ute • confection wizard himself, or st.anding in St. Peter's Square waiting for that plume of white smoke to billow forth ahead of the next pope. Most days, the Irvine Co. monolith hums along with no sign or glimpse of "God" or "The Flame,• as some in the Irvine Co. Observers Society want to call Bren. But every now and then, the curtain parts and neclcs strain to take a peek inside, to perhaps catch some hint of what "the company" has cooking, or to briefly set a gaze upon the Ouija board where much of Orange County's future is plotted. The most recent of these episodes has been the rather curious spate of what look like midlife crises that have run through the stratosphere of the Irvine Co.'s management Byron de Arakol BETWEEN THE UNES in recent· months. And the question whispered among the ranks of the Irvine Co. Observers Society is this: What's behind it? In Febrwuy of last year, Irvine Co. mouthpiece Larry Thomas -one of the few folks who ~ figured out how to transform a career in jour- nalism into a small fortune - shed his corporate blue suit and wing tips for a pair of sandals and a 14-month odyssey of self-renewal and discovery. Thomas recently chronicled his Chopraesque pilgrimage in a lengthy trea- tise published in a Newport Beach business weekly. In it, Thomas treats the reader to a rather personal refiection of why he left the employ of "my very generous but demanding employer• (a due?) to pursue the esoteric truths and plea- sures of Jungian psychology, Hellerwork and the art of sinking a cwting downhill putt And what does he find? That having a "structured plan for daily and long-term play" is wise. That friends should be •an integral part of every ~y. • That it is best to •overcome worry about things big and small. w Th.at it is healthy to •disregard the guilt of having and enjoying free- dom." That we should· all •celebrate each day with the opportunity to pursue and realize your dreams." Which makes me wonder: Just what is it the Irvine Co. does to these folks? Strip them of their souls? Who knows. But apparently the answers that Thomas found while wandering in the wilderness were sufficient to lure him back to "The Flame" like a moth on a hot August night. He's back at the Irvine Co. I thought maybe there would be additional dues in yet another business publica- tion this week, which is carry- ing the fourth installment in the travel diary of one Franz Wisner. Wisner is another for- mer Irvine Co. Dack (he replaced Thomas) and was once a spokesman for fonner Gov. Pete Wilson. Wisner, like Thomas, climbed down from the right hand of "The Flamew for an extended poke around South America with his brother, Kurt. In this particular episode of Franz Wisner's Excellent Adventure, the reader is regaled with a first-person narrative of how a tall bnmet hooker with •exaggerated makeup and heel$ smiled" as she passed W1SDer in a U.ma, Peru, hotel. lobby. And we 1 learn that counterfeiting is a political issue du jour in.J>eru, thanks to his adrriission that he is carrying a.i:ound a phony Peruvian bill. Then the reader learns that it was necessary for WISiler to l!avel all the way back to Rio just to track down the "perfect caipirinha (the high-octane Brazilian equivalent to the margarita).• What did the company do to this poor man that be is catching the gaze of prosti- tutes, packing rubber CllITeD- cy and swilling exotic margar- itas? I don't know. Having consumed the half- time diaries of these two gen- tlemen, I'm wondering if a third isn't far behind with the recent departure of one of Bren's biggest fish, Gary Hunt. Hunt -long the right- hand man to "The Other Donald• (indeed, some would say a tattoo on Bren's right hand) -earlier this year turned m his prized lieutenant bars and his key to the top floor. The spin was he wanted to spend more time with his kids, referee some more American Youth Soccer Organization games, and explore some new and different opportunities. It would be nice were these to be true. After all, I've long admired Hunt as a dapper and efficient deputy whO, I wish to believe, knows that his work for Bren wasn't . so important as brain surgery and that middle age is not cause for meltdown. Nevertheless, if the published accounts from Thomas and W1S0er are any indication, I'm not holding out hope. We may soon be reading remote entries from Hunt recounting his adventures while harvesting beans ui a Sumatran coffee grove, or hang gliding in the Himalayas with the Dalai Lama, or working a produce cart in Mogadishu. One tlung's for sure. U mid.life cnses aren't your tlung, don't leave your resume with the Irvine Co. • BYRON DE A.RAKAL is a wJltet. and communications cortsµltant. He resides in Costa Mesa. SJ.C.hn DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA -A plan that would have allowed the city to take control of the Cabfomia Scenario garden in Town Center was pulled Monday night before it even came to a vote. Counci.1woman Linda Dixon, who had asked city staff to put the plan together, said she didn't feel she had the support to get the change in city law passed. Dixon's proposal would have altered how the city plAces buildings or structures on the Local Register of Historic Places. The fate of the garden, which was designed by Isa.mu Noguchi in 1982, has been a months-long source of debate between the dty and the gar- den's owner, Commonwealth Partners LLC. Commonwealth, along with South Coast Plaza Partners and the Orange County Performing Arts Center, is wdrldng to ren- ovate the area into a pedestrian- oriented cultural arts district. The pieces being developed by South Coast and the performing arts center have received the dty'sOK. Jennifer Kho DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA -The latest round of rolling black- outs have made the power crisis again a common topic m many households, but energy talk has been a reg- ular conversation piece for years in City Manager Allan Roeder's home. Roeder has been married for more than four years to hts wife, Christie, a deputy director of Southern Califor- nia Edlson's public affairs department. ·it's such a complex sub- 1ect, all the way from the federal government level, l.lterally, to the local commu- nity, so it's difficult for ,any· one at a ny given level to have d good understanding of how all the pieces fit together,· Roeder said. "We have the opportunity to talk about the many different aspects of it from both sides.• Everi before they were mdnied, the two realiz0P their jobs would occasional- ly cross paths. About five years ago, they were together when they both received calls about a transformer fire at South Coast Plaza. Roeder's call was trcri the Fire Department. J-lis wife's call was from Edison. They drove out lo the scene together, Roeder recalled. · ·Sometimes I still go out lo calls with her,• he said . "It redlly is kind of a family thing. We do disasters together. Could you give your work.men a heads up?' It improves the working rela- tionship. Especially with the noticing we need in advance for rolling black- outs, I think it has been beneficial to Edison because they have a better understanding of what cities need, and it has also been beneficial to us to bet- ter understand the whole scheme of things.• Roeder said his wife is good about sending him e- mail updates about the energy situation and any new legislation information that could affect the city. Sometimes, he said, he gets credit for Edison's good service, such as when a transformer gets replaced quickly, even though he really has nothing to do with it. But sometimes the pair "takes the heat• for other things they have nothing to do with, Roeder said . •Yes, our electricity goes out like everybody else's,· • he said.
