America has neve( had a war
fought on its own soil, Pincbut
said, and people are starting to
forget. The other problem is that
younger veterans just don't have
the ti.me to join and teach the
community about their experi-

DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -When vet-
eran Sy f\udes took his 33-year-
old son to a Jewish War Veterans
·group .meeting, the youngster
asked him what be was doing
with all these old men.
At 69, Budes is the youngest
member of a dwindling group of
men that hold the ~tory of
World War ll, the Korean War
and even the Vietnam War jn
their hearts.
•Our post is (:lying out,• he
said. "People don't know what
l~emorial Dayf is about. f very
I
• seldom see American flags."
What worried the motley
group of veterans that gathered.
on Sunday at the Orange County
Fairgrounds is that they are fad-
ing. Their once starched caps are
frayed and the medals are tar-
nished. Over time, even their
commanding voices have
wavered and people have simply
· stopped listening.
"He who does not remember
history is doomed to rQPeat it,"
warned veteran Siegfried
Pinchut. Mlt'll happen again.•
Many of the veterans that sat
at various informationdl booths
were saddened by what they see
Mil's imperative we continue
what our fathers fought for,"
Budes said. .
On the one day to remember
those who have died for Ameri-
ca's freedom, some veterans
said no one even seems to know
what Memorial Day stands for
anymore. The holiday has
become an extended weekend
to go to the beach and ba,becue,
Pinchut said.
SEA KINGS TAKE CIF TITLE
"Anti-Semitism is alive and
well," Pinchut said. MWe need to
teach tolerance -teach children
of man's inhumanity to man."
Budes nodded in agreement,
adding that one of the main pur-
poses of their group is to make
sure the Holocaust never hap-
pens again.
Despite his son's resistance to
the veterans' meetings, Budes
hopes to teach the next genera-
tion the lessons he so painfully
experienced during World War II.
Later today be will plant
American flags-on lawns with his
grandchildren.

DAJLY PILOT
CYPRESS -The story lines were
nearly as plentiful as sideouts Saturday
night, as Corona del Mar High outdueled
Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 15-3, 6-
15, 15-12, 9-15, 15-6, to win the CIF
Southern Section Division I boys volley-
ball title at Cypress College.
For those who like the revenge angle,
the Sea Kings avenged a four-game CIF
title-match loss to the Sailors last spring.
That-.defeat,.which included the Sea
Kings losing an 11-4 third-game lead,
stuck in their collective craw until they
traded it for the sweet taste or their fourth
section crown, their second in three sea-
sons.

than CdM outside hitter Greg Stampley.
Stampley, a future USC walk-on
whom Conti said had a 101-degree fever
Thursday. still had enough adrenaline-
induced strength to post 10 of his match-
high 33 kills in the deciding game. He
also ended the two-hour. 15-minute
affair with the title-clinching stuff block.

Christian Berg-Hansen and junior
outside hitters Brian Gaeta and Blake

longest at 31 minutes, began with
Harbor taking a 4-1 lead~ before. CdM
ran off five straight points. nes at 6, 7, 8, 9; 11 and 12 fol-

up a Charlie Alshuler kill to put CdM

nearly 3,000 rooters off on one of their

After CdM overcame a 4-0 deficit

the Sea Kings away, using"bnly two of
Clayton's 30 kills, neither for points,
to force the fifth game.
•After that first game, we were

trail for Brown, who played
football and baseball at Newport
Harbor, until he broke his left
hand one year in baseball and
moved over to volleyball, a club
team at the time where Mthey ·
needed anybody with two legs.·
Brown played volleyball with a
cast on his left hand, then, once
it healed and he could play with
both hands, he found another
natural gilt.
A two-year 'Starter at
comerback who played on the
Sailors' Sunset League
co-championship football team
Conti also acknowledged Satur·
day's triumph, which denied Harbor .
its fourth section crown in six title
matches, will be savored by more
than those who rod e home on the
team bus.
Brown's life changed
when he was studying
for the Medical.College
Admission Test and
competing on the
beach as a AAA-rated
volleyball player. As
the Association of
Volleyball Professionals
Tour started to grow in
the 1980s, so did its
in the fall of '73, Brown
wanted to play
quarterback under
Coach Don Lent, but
instead was a backup
to Steve Bukich.
"That was my first
really good lesson in
politics and how things
work in the real world,
so to speak,• Brown
said. "It was
discouraging and I
"I think this meant a lot to the
community,• Conti said. "I saw a lot
of guys who played for me who came
up short in the title match . I think
this was important to them. They
share in the credit, because they
helped rejuvenate the tradition in
this program."
Illingworth finished with 16 kills·
for the Tars, who also got 11 from
Ga.pa, six kills and three blocks from
Tip~tt. as well as three kills and two
blocks from Berg-Hansen.
Seniors Jimmy Sanders, Adam
Tomalas and Brad Craig, as weU as
sophomores Lloyd Wright (one ace)
and Greg Perrine, also contributed for
the Sailors.

That's when Brown Tim Brown
opted to switch caree.f
paths and enter the chiropractic
field, as he became interested in
the causes rather than the affects
of sports injuri,es, and began
educating athletes on nutrition,
conditioning and prevention
techniques.
Then, realizing his pro beach
volleyball playing future didn't
stand much of a chance against
guys like Sinjin Smith and Karch
Kiraly, he broke out his adjusting
table and served as an on-site
chiropractor for the A VP Tour.
"That became my forte." he
said, •and I was able to take
those physical (problems) and •
tum It into a positive, while
working on their imbalances,
because as their injuries were
healing,. we would always be
working on something. else.•
Brown, who played
-competitive volleyball from age
14 to 41 , started bringing his
table to pro surling events and
soon became a fixture in the
competitor's area, while gaining
a reputation on the sand as the
•swf Doctor." He also worked
on members of the Newport
Beach Dukes ln World
TeamTennis in the early '90s.
•Now, my practice is mostly
pro and elite athletes, from pro
football players to extreme-sport
athletes,• said Brown, who
recently invented a new taping
technique, which bas led to more
speaking engagements,
including next month's tor the
American.Society of Orthopedic
Ankle and Foot Surgeons.
"It's more than a cllnic,"
Brown said of his practice', "it's
kind of a school for injwed
athletes. 1 take the skills I
enjoyed as a teacher (at noy
High for a semester out of
college), and try to teach people
almost quit, but my
dad would've pulled my surfing
privileges. He encouraged me to
stay with it.
"It was a poignant time in my
life and how the world can be.
I really wanted to get the (heck)
out of there, but my dad
encouraged me to learn some
good life's lessons ... and it
turned into a positive, because I
was able to continue my football
career at Redlands."·
In four years, the Bulldogs
never lost a conference game
with Brown as their quarterback.
In Q.is junior year( Redlands
reached the 1976 NAlA national
championship game.
"We had a plethora of really
good athletes who had no
business being at a small
college,· said Brown, who addoo
that he learned the most from his
father, Bill, and former Redlands
footbaJJ. coach Frank Seraeo.
Bill Brown is a longtime
Newport Harbor assistant
football coach, •who has touched
more lives than I could ever
imagine in my life as a doctor.•
Before deciding to enter
medical school, today's honoree
in the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of
Fame p1ayed volleyball at
Orange Coast College and
competed on Coach Laird Hayes'
national championship $wting
teamin 1980.
