The Irvine Company salutes the 20 student leaders in its fourteenth annual Leadership Awards--
a competition that recognizes and encourages high sc hool seniors who have distinguished
themselves through academic achievement, communication skills and_ leadership positions
in school and community activities. The awards competition challenged them even further
through three phases of judging. Their community participation and accomplishments, ·
performance in the leadership exercise, and interviews helped community judges identify
the eight semifinalists and four finalists among these outstanding young leaders.
All student leaders received a $1,000 scholarship, semifinalists were awarded
an additional $2,000, and fmalists a total of $6,000.
The Irvine Company honors these important leaders of the future by acknowledging
the schools and educators, parents and families who provide the positive environment
that has nurturoo them in their individual achievements and success .
.
· We congratulate our student leaders on a job well done and encourage them to
continue their quest for excellence. We are proud of our future leaders.

OA!LY PILOT
Kellie Brownell got her

Shakespeare a little
more than a year ago wh en
she read w Macbeth" for an
eighth-grade English class.
Now the 15-year-old
Newport Harbor High fresh-
man is a Shakespeare fanat-
ic. She has read 15 come-
dies, nine tragedies, four
histories, every sonnet, at
least 20 essays on Shake-
speare and has seen 15 of
the plays performed.
Her love of the Bard of
Avon even prompted her to
tAke up fencing and travel to
Oregon and England for
Shakespeare festivals.
When she couldn't find
every imaginable bit of
information on the 'man, the
plays and the time period on
one Web site, Kellie decided
to build her own -www.
ShakespeareAnswers.com.
wThere's a lot of pages on
the Web, but none con-
tained everything," Ke llie

asked and good answer'S' must be

During the former Wilson
administration, new emphasis was
~ed on the need for buildlng,
refurbishing and rebuilding our
schools. Reforms to reduce class
size, increase competence and
student performance are depen-
dent upon safe, dean, well-
equipped facilities. Schools as
well as other infrastructure needs
Q4ve been sadly neglected. Nec-

also bas been neglected.

This p lan
(SB50) was submitted to the voters
of California in the form of Propo-

Prop lA provided $6.7 billion
for public K-12 facilities. Half of
the funds have been appropriated
and the other ha}.f will be avail-
able in July. There is far greater
demand than dollars available.
l\ming is important in order to
leverage the state-match portion
before the money is gone. Without
the passage of these bonds, New-
port-Mesa risks losing access to
the$.e state matching funds.
As a former member of the
State Allocation Board, I am
impressed with U\e planning, jus-~
tification and oversight for the
expenditures of Measure A. The
collaborative effort of the New-
port-Mesa School District with
co~unity input and expertise
assures us a fiscally sound invest-
ment that adequately responds to
the "hard• questions. The contin-
uing external oversight providlng
public accountability is a c:r,itical
factor.
Our schools are the center of
communities; they reflect our val-
ues. Our kids deserve a healthy,
safe environment in facilities
where teachers can teach and stu-
dents can learn, where parents
can feel they too belong so they
may assist and encourage the
learning process.
In order for this initiative to
pass, it requires a two-thirds
majority --a very high voter
thre5hold. A plan must be arti.cu-
lated so that the community rec-
ognizes we are all 'stakeholders in
the benefits of an educational sys-
tem that bolds the promise.of.
future social, and economic secu-

The conditions of the school

I .beg to differ with Peter Buffa's
conclusions that the education
obtained inside our public
schools is crumbling as fast as the
buildings. He should have accom-
panied me to the four awards cer-
emonies and academic rally l
attended this week.
I went to high school in the
1960s, and I would not be able to
compete today. School projects
require kids to do research and
find graphics from all types of
resources, including \Pe lnternel
Then, the final pr<>duct must
be presented in a power point
presentation, or with video edit-
.. ing, in addition lo more traditional
formats. As one mom put it, ·1 can
finally use a computer to type a
letter, .but l haven't figured out
how to tum it on yet.·
In all fairness to Buffa, the
awards ceremonies I attended
o featured our area's best and
brightest. There are many kids in
our schools who are not doing
very well. But, when you see the
end product ctr those students who
take advantage of every school
opportunity, it makes your head
spin. The Academic All-Slat
breakfast sponsored by the Costa
Mesa Chamber of Commerce
showcased those who had
achieved academic success at our
local high schools and colleges.
The top 16 at one school all bad at
least a 4.0 grade point average.
The list Of accomplishments
besides academics was stagger-
ing. How can they pack so much
in their day?~
J My favorite was the Irvine
Comi:)ahy's 2000 Student
Leadership Awards Program. I
don't think you could meet a nicer
group of 20 high school seniors
who appear to be running our
county schools almost single-
handedly. Their first assignment
was to meet a total stranger from
another school, talk to them for a
few minutes, and then provide a
one-take videotaped biography of
that student. That was our intro-
duction to each of the award win-
ners. If these kids could anchor
the nightly news, I would start
watching it again. They each had
a unique style and perspecnve
that shone through.
The second assignment was to
read about land management.
then meet with their designated
team and design a community,
' while being judged by urban and
land use planners. Finally, each
one faced a 30-rninute interview
with a panel of judges asking
them such things as their platform
as governor.
The most heart-rendlng part ot
the program was to bear the stu-
dents' words about their inspira-
tional teachers. Those teachers
bad been invited to bear what the
kids bad to say. If you could have
heard tbOlle words, you would rest ·
assured that a fine education is
available at every district 9Cbool.
While teachers love to win grant
money, I apect that the few
wonts ot prUe extolled by their
studenlS will keep tboee teacben
irllpbd for a very Jong time.

D AILY PILOT
CORONA DEL MAR -The numbers are up,
and down, at Corona del Mar High, which began
spring football practice May 15.
The upside is 73 bodies (combined varsity and
junior varsity), which Freeman believ~~ may be
unpreced ented.
"That's the most we've had in a long time. I don't
even think we had that -many-whea-we-two~pla
tooned with big teams in 1980 and '8V said Dick
Freeman, entering his sixth season as ·head coach
after two sepMate stints at CdM as an, assistant.
The down side, however, is a lack of imposing
size. · •
•i think we have two guys who weigh more than
300 pounds (Dave Richardson and Thomas
Scheck)," Freeman said. "From there, we drop off
to a few guys who are around 220." -
But Freeman, whose squad went 3-8, but shared
the Pacific Coast League title in its first crack at the
circuit last fall, believes what the Sea Kings lack in
size, they may make up for in speed.
"We're going to be athletic and we'll have good
team speed," Freeman said. "We're going to more
quick-hitting stuff on offense, because we won't be
able to pound on people." ,
Ereeman has also been encouraged by this
team's work ethic, which ne will test this spring
with a strong emphasis on fundamentals.
"These guys have had a pretty good attitude all
year long," Freeman said. "We have .some good
leadership from our senior group-and our young
guys are ve.ry entusiastic. I really like our group of
sophomoreS'. They're hard workers and they have
decent ability. We're going to have a real N team
for the first ti.m,e since I've been head coach.• ·
Freeman said the emphasis on fundamentals
will lay th~ foundation for more detailed offensive
and defensive instruction in the summer and fall.
"We won't implement a lot during spring," he
said. "We'll have enough of a passing game and a
pass defense, so we can play a passing league
game."
Freeman singled out .the senior leadership pro-
vided by decorated outside linebackers Blake
Hacker (All-PCL) and Nick Prosser (all-league and
All-Newport-Mesa District), as well as Tuamata
Grey, who will be a senior middle linebacker next
fall.
Hacker, just 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, but a warrior
in the weight room, could also be a leader in the
offensive backfield.
Quarterback, like most of the positions up front,
is up for grabs. Returning starters Evan Burden, a
late arrival from volleyball, and Matt Moore, as well
as Fountain Valley transfer Dylan Hendy, who will
be a junior, are among those trying to impress.
Freeman said Richardson, 6-5, 320 as a junior,
but working his way closer to 300 and moving well,
appears ready for a breakthrough campaign.
The Sea Kings are practicing three days a week,
typically Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and lift-
ing the other two. Free.man $aid th_ey will conclude
with a June 17 seven-on-seven scrimmage.

CdM's Liz Morse has a big lead ln the girls' 800.

DAILY'PllOT ,
NORWALK-Ever since the 2000 high school track sea-
son started, Corona del Mar High senior Liz Morse bas yet to
find a challenge she couldn't overcome in the girls 800-meter
run.
Morse, the CIF Southern Section Division ID champion in
the event, has yet to lose an 800 this year. This includes the
Arcadia Invitational in April, when she beat some of Califor-
nia's• top runners with a then-national best o( 2:09.40. She
posted the nation's fifth-best time with a 2:10.71 at the South-
ern Section Masters Meet.
Morse is considered the favorite to win state, but her
national mark has since been swpassed by two runners and
she will face one of them at the CIF State meet in Cerritos Col-
lege. The preliminaries start Friday, with the finals on Satur·
day.
While the 800 is a tough field, a c~uple of note worthies~
missing. San Lorenzo Valleys Alejandra Bamentos, wbo owns
the nation's best mark with a 2:09.35, opted for the 1.roo and
3,200. Los Gatos' Heather H.ennessey, who bad the nation's
fourth-best time with a 2:10.53 at Arcadia, is not competing at
state.
Nevertheless, Morse will have to deal with Vallejo senior
Spring Dawson. who posted the nation's second-fastest time
with a 2:09.36 at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters.
A freshman, Costa Mesa's Sharon Day is a real challenger
for the girls high jump title in her first state meet. In the Mas-
ters, Day, the Division m champion, tied the state's second-
best and the nation's fourth-best mark with a 5-9, good for
second place. She just d\issed dearing the 5-10 mark. koock-
ing the bet down with her calf.
At state, she will be pushed again by Edison's Radlel and
Bianca Ziemann. Raebel tied the state-best jump with a 5-10
to wtn the Masters.

key is to have all that stuff become automatic and to just
clear your mind and go for it.•
Thanks to some friendly competition from Ziemann, Day
was able to c;o higher than ever before.
"It was lil<e, bang, bang, bang, bang," Eugene Day said.
"One would clear, then the other, then the other, going
higher and higher, pushing each other farther and farther.
As a former competitor, it was great to see that friendly
rivalry push each athlete to the maximum.•
With both parents and older brother Louis Day, a senior,
having experience competitively in the high jump, she has
been involved in the sport since a youngster. -
·She was jumping as early as two,• her Dad said. "Then
she got into running and in the seventh grade, she got back
into it again. Obviously, s~ had the ability to learn fcom her
mother, brother and mysell because we've been there. It's
been a fun roller coaster so far.•
Now with the biggest high school meet right around the
comer, what goals has Day set for herself?
•Basically, I want to qualify for the finals, then in the
finals, set a new PR,• Day said. "I'm sure I'm going to be
extremely nervous before the meet, but I'm sure I'll settle
down in time.·
Her father sees even higher peaks for Sharon. "Right now,
the state title is up for grabs," Eugene Day said. "Sharon,
Rachel and another girl up north are all right next to each
other. If Sharon nails her technique, she'll be hard to beat.•
The secret to Day's success? South Coast Plaza. "I love to

keeps my legs so strong.•
