Doily Pilot MARBLE CONTINUED FROM 1 election drew yawns and ambivalent shrugs, the debate over traffic in New- port Beach is roaring through town like a Humvee on the open road. Beek is one of the archi- tects of something called Greenlight, an initi&tive that if adopted by voters in November W9uld require voter approval for many large-scale developments or expansions in town.· Fearing that the initiative . is riding the crest of popular- -ity, a group has launched a petition drive to put a com- peting measure on the November ballot. The group has until mid-June to drum ~up 6,700 signatures. While Greenlighl has drawn the support of New- port's gilded environmental leaders, the countermeasure -referred to derisively as "Redlight• by detractors - has brought together an equally respected group of elder statesmen, such as for- mer city manager Bob Wynn and Tom Edwards and Clarence Turner, both former mayors. Somehow -and I'm try- ing hard here -I can't think of a group of people less likely to engage in street brawling (Edwards does look like a reasonably Ht welter- weight, however). These are people who •agendize• their differences, people who seek out "win-win" solutions. COUNCIL - CONTINUED FROM 1 encouraged James and Joe Cefalia, who proposed lour- home projects on 16th Street and Garden Lane, to redesign the developments. allowing for more on-site parking and yard space. "We don't want to do away with new develop- ments here,• said Erickson, who voted against the Garden Lane development, but supported the 16th Street project. He said the homes on Garden Lane would clog parking spots and spill new traffic onto streets near Kaiser Elementary and Kaiser Primary schools, making it difficult for par- ents to pick up their chil· dren. But he said the proposed 16th Street homes would fit m there. ·we just need to improve the standards. What we have now isn't working,· Erickson said. He expressed concern that his foes were dispensing false information along with their pens and-oJ>etition forms. B~ek then crowded the plate a bit more w,hen he . asked the Dis'trict Attorney's Office to step into I.he fray and assure tHat the elecpon code that pertams to signa- ture gathering was being fol- lowed. ln response, lawyers for the competing initiative sent Beek a letter, letting him know that interring with lhe gathering of signatures was also a violation of the elec- tion code. The letter to Beek went on to demand that he stop "shouting at close range" at signature gatherers, refrain Crom "thrusting literature into the hands and faces" of would-be signature signers and stop "stalking or chas- ing" the signature collectors.
