Barry F•ulkner DAILY PILOT CORONA DEL MAR -With his lineup card back in order, Corona del Mar High baseball coach John Emme hopes his team is once again "Knecht-ing" on all circuits as it pre· pares for today's CfF Southern Sec- tion Division IV first-round playoff game against visiting Ocean View at 3:15 p.m . The Pacific Coast League charnpi· on Sea Kings (15-8) were unbeaten in 11 PCL games with senior out- fielder Dave Knecht at the top the batting order. But. when he was side· lined for two weeks battling mononucleosis, they dropped three of their four PCL contests. Knecht's return for the 'final week of the regular season coincided with a two-game sweep of Costa Mesa to preserve the PCL crown. The Sea Kings finished a half-game ahead of second-place University. Ocean View (16-13), enters as the third-place representative from the Gold.en West League. But both of today's combatants have CIF title runs within their memory banks, with CdM having won the CIF Divi· sion IV btle in 1999 and the Sea- bawks havipg accomplished the same feat in '98. ·"It's an interesting match up," CdM Coach John Emme said. "You hate to see the Orange County guys (only six of the 32 teams in the brack- et are from Orange County) beat up on themselves right off the bat." . . But _the made-for-television event, which features teams from the PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA tours and 1s shown live on ABC Sports, is not returning this year to the Newport Coast resort course owned by the Irvine Co. Organizers of the December event ln golf's so-called 1illy season have been informed by the Irvine Co. that their reqt.1.est to-return to Pelican Hill has been denied. Terry Jastrow, an award-winning televilion producer and president of the company that operates the event, was unavailable for comment ThUJ'lday. . But Gary Pollard, tournament director of the Team Matches slnce the event moved to Pelican Hill in 1999, said he doesn't know where the golf tournament will be played in December. "We liked the experience at Peli- can Hill,• said Pollard, who lives in Newport Coast. "I'm a tournament director. I run golf tournaments. I don't choose where it'• golng to be played ... I'd like to have the event where it's going to be wall-received by the title sponsor, by the coune and by the television viewing audi· ence. • Bobby Heath, Pelican Hill's Director of Golf, said the club will entertain offers from Gaylord Event Television (formerly Jack Nicklaus Productions), which produces the event, in the future. But this year's schedule was too full and the club wanted to go in another direction. "They did want to have it here again this year," Heath said of the event producers, "but we just felt our golf course was filling up and we had other events that time of year.• One event, the Fazio Cup, will be played at Pelican Hill in November on the Welt Cout for the fint time. It is named o..fter golf coune archi· tect Tom Fazio, who designed botl\ the Ocean South and Ocean North counes at Pelican Hill. The Dinen Club Matches were played at Pelican Hill in December 1999, then the event changed title sponsors ln 2000.
