TRIP DOWN Students at · Our Lady Queen of Angels go through a review of something many have forgotten emo. ·ane Danette Goulet DAILY PILOT I f you even hear the word "participle," you must be visiting a classroom. I'd venture to guess that many adults don't even recall what a participle is. So as seventh-grade students in Kathleen Vanmoorlegham's class at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Corona del Mar did a quick review of the verbs that can act as adjectives, their being able to spot one in a sentence was more than many can probably accomplish. The English class was tackling the wonder- ful world of conjugating verbs -something WEDNESDAY that will seem like second nature to the stu- dents in no time. but while it's being learned is a rather confusing proposition. As they moved past the participles and onto the discussion of tenses, Vanmoorlegham related the perplexing grammar rules to those that many students are learning in Spanish classes. While the infinitive form of a verb in English would be preceded by the word "to," in Span- ish the infinitive form would end in either •er," • ir" or • ar," she told them. What a fabulous idea relating the two, I thought. I don't remember struggling with conjugat- ing verbs in the English language, but Spanish MONDAY was impossible for me. While they were working on regular verb!> -those that would be the same word in past, present and future, and not irregular -l wa!. quite sure students knew that the past te nse of "leave" was not "leaved," but "left." So isn't conjugating verbs really just learn- ing tenns for what you have learned t6 do in your speech already? Terms I venture to guess most of them, if past history holds, wlll forget. • IN T1tE QASSROOM is a weekly feature in which Daily Pilot education writer Danette Goulet visiu a campus within the Newport-Mesa Unified School District and writes about her experience. Myford's older brother, James, who had been groomed by their father as heir apparent, died. Then the father, J.I., died, and in 1947, Myf ord, who bad been living in San Francisco with little to do with the company, sudden- ly beµnne a major stockhold- er and president. . Myford, or Mike as be pre- ferred to be.called, was a big, friendly, homely man with a peculiar, shambling gait. He loved to play golf and the piano, and was good at both. He was kind, thoughtful and genefQus. He was quiet, reserved and, in my opinio , shy and · Robert Gordner THE VERDICT But he was not unaware of bis position as one of the wealthiest men in Cali.for· nia, and he was painfully aware of his responsibilities as president of the Irvine Co. Mike also had a keen sense of social responsibility that his wealth and position brought him. The whole world knows of the Boy Scout Jambo1ee because be turned his ranch over to the Boy Scouts for their annual even t. Other aspects of Mike's personality may not be so well-known. One day, be invited a group of us to lunch in Sant.a Ana and announced that Santa Ana needed a Boys Club. It did, but no one had ever done anything about it. With him as a ramrod, we organized a sUc:cessful Boys Club in that town. He put up some money but saw to it that the rest of us and the townspeople did the lion's share of the work. Then one night he had a group of us to the ranch for dinner and we met a man who was advoca~e kind of a one-world program. I have forgotten the name of the man and the name of the organization, but this W4$ during the McCarthy era, when any such notion was considered Communist- ins ired. ~e McCarthy influence was big in Orange County, and it took guts to present suchaprograrn, evenforone as wealthy as Mike. Nothing came of it, but it was a coura- geous step in a sincere effort at doing something about world peace regardless of the popularity of the program. • The Irvine Coast Country Club (now the Newport Beach Country Club) was really Mike's baby. l!l this respect, many may not be aware that he insisted that the club would never be completely private. By the tenns of the lease, it had to be semiprivate. Mike didn't approve of private clubs. He thought they smacked too much of elitism and that everyone had the right to play golf, not just those who belonged to coun- try clubs. 1lus may annoy the present membership of the club, but that is Mike Irvine's legacy. · Mike ran the company .like a ranch. It was the lrvine Ranch, not the Irvine Co. Mike was the patron with a strong sense of community responsibility. Real estate development was sparse. The big-land development aspect occurred after Mike's death. Of course, land development was inevitable, but I wonder 1ust what path 1t would have taken under Mike. Mike's father intended that the ranch remain in the fami- ly. That was the pwpose for estAblishing the foundation. I haven't the slightest idea whether Mike could have staved off the sale of the com- pany to its present owners. If he could have, I have a very strong feeling that relations betw~ the company and the community would be rachcally different today. We will never know On Jan. 11, 1959, this kind, thoughtful and public-spmted but troubled man killed him- self for reasons we will never know. • ROBERT GARDNER is a Corona del Mar resident and a former Judge. NOISE ()ltf)WANCE OtANGES • What to expect: Council members are expected to approve the move. NEWPORT VILLAGE PARK Council members will discuss the initiation of a general plan amendment that would allow city offi- cials to move ahead with plans for a park on the 12- acre site behind the New- port Beach Central Library. Supporters of an arts and education center had tried to reserve about 3.5 acres for their project, but council members rejected the pro~I in March. City Council members will discuss changing New- port Beach's noise ordi- nance to make it easier to file criminal charges: Coun- cilman Gary Proctor sug- gested the move after pollce broke up a 40th birthday party May 12 for notorious noisemaker Den- nis Rodman. The revised ordinance would include a section that clarifies that people may face criminal charges after an officer has Issued a warning. The dis- trict attorney's off ice has so far hesitated to prosecute offenders because the ordi- nance made it difficult to prove that someone willful- ly made noise. City officials hope the new version will change that. • What to expect: Council members are expected to approve the changes. Council members are also expected to direct city officials to draw up plans for a park, as well as a budget amendment to pay for the project, and bring them back for review at a future meeting. • What to expect: JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT Council members will discuss whether to set aside $400,000 to complete an environmental review that's necessary to amend the existing settlement agreement. Establishing flight caps, nighttime cur- fews and passenger limits on the airport, the agree- ment took effect in 1985 and is scheduled to expire in 2005. On May 8, the Orange County Board of Supervisors tentatively approved a proposal by Newport Beach city offi- cials to add several gates Council members are expect- ed to initiate the amend- ment and ask for park plans and cost estimates. 1', l FYI • WHO: The Newport Beach City Council is May- or Gary Adams, Steve Bromberg, Norma Glover. A company spokeswoman also noted the construction does not conflict with a pledge made in the weeks leading up to that election by Gary Hunt, then the execu- tive vice president of the Irvine Co. In a letter to the Daily Pilot on Oct. 24, Hunt wrote that lhe company wished •to inform lhe residents of New- port Beach that the Irvine Co. will not seek any future amendments to the general plan of Newport Beach. Irvine Co. spokeswoman Jennifer Smith countered that the construction is part of long-standing plans for the center. "It certainly does not fly in the face of what we've said," Smith said, noting there are no plans for a high-rise build- ing. Arst said he and his fellow Greenlight backers are con- cerned about the possible added traffic caused by peo- ple coming to the new restau- rants. • On Monday, Fashion Island officials also announced that four new retailers will open by the swnmer: Kenneth Cole, Par- allel, Sara and Aerosoles. A company can't always have everyone working at a centralized facility. So, let's say a company bad 23 people more· than they could handle al one facility, but they had a facility just a quarter-mile away that was ful- ly equipped to Goy Geiser- Sondovol EDUCATION"AllY SPEAKING house an addition~l 200 lo 300 more people. It will lake away recreational space for the occupants of the facility if they add portable buildings to accommo- date those 23 people at the one site. It will cost $300,000 more to keep the 23 people at the facility they are at now by adding four portable buildings. That is money that could be used to give everybody a raise or buy n eces- sary equipment to he lp everyone at the compan y. The c()mpany already has lots of extra space at most of its branches, and the amount of extra space is expected to grow every year for the next 10 years. Does the compa ny spend the $300,000 to add portable buildings this year? It mjght if the company is the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The school board is in the process of determining facilities issues for next year. It is predicted that the echo.baby boom bubble has reached sixth grade, and will be hiltmg the secondary schools as the e lementary school popu- lation shrinks. Even with the adjustments made to elementary schools for the 20:1 ratio in the lower grades, there are empty classrooms at most elementary schools. Only one school will need four more rooms, while the neighboring schools less than a mile away have three to 10 classrooms extra. Some kids going to the school that needs extra classrooms don't live in the school's ne ig hbor- hood. The way I figure it, we are going to spend about $13,000 a student to be able to house the predicted 23 extra kids at that particular school site, for a one-year solution. Then, in a couple of years, we will pay to have someone haul off the p8Ttables and the plat- forms. I would like to propose a less expensive solution. Offer the first 23 students willing to transfer to a differ- ent school a $1,000 transfer bonus. Offer the PTAs that lure kids to their campus $1 ,000 per transferred student for school expenses. That would only cost the school district $46,000, and half of that money would be used for school expenses. We would save at least $250,000 that could be used to boost teacher salaries. Everybody wins. Another option is to follow the kids home from school and actually see who belongs at the school. Stay tune d to your school board meeting lo see what they decide to d o .... RESPOND. -chrts Kyle. one of Dennis Rodman's neighbors, on the former NBA star's 40th birthday party held May 12 THE 15~ We asked readers what they thought of the district attorney's election fraud charges against Costa Mesa Councilman Chris Steel. I n my opinion, it looks to me as if a deteat- ed and disgruntled candidate spent many hours trying to get even and finally found a couple of small indiSaetions to hang on Steel. , lf you run a man out of office for helping someone sign her name on the proper line and a husband sign for his wife, then we'll get the kind of government we deserve. I'd be a lot richer if I had a dollar for every per- son who had signed a paper for his or her spouse. Keep Steel in office. We need honest peo- ple on the council "Who are honest in their opinions whether we agree with them or nol Steel should remain on the council and get a much lesser punishment for his indiscretion. It's in my other purse, and is just an oversight, not with criminal intent• Gary Monahan's comments regarding Steel's alleged intent or that the crime was a mere oversight would not be admitted in court. FLO MARTIN Costa Mesa Titis charge against Chris Steel is ridicu- lous. When hasn't a husband or wife signed their spouse's name on a document that they knew the spouse would approve? I think I read that the district attorney's office spent six months investigating this. Seems like people using false identities to get driver's licenses lo cast votes and to ruin other people's credit would be higher priori- ties. It sounds like vindictiveness to me. I am sending Steel $100 to help in his defense. I hope others will step up also to help him. RICHARDT. DURKEE Corona del Mar I am pleased that the Daily Pilot covers the local news thoroughly, and the story of Chris Steel bas been very interesting. With my interest in politics, I have often obtained signatures for individuals and propositions I support. When you carry a petition, you know it must be done wi.th complete honesty and care. lf you are intent upon honestly follow- ing the law, you will take the time to go back to obtain legal signatures. I feel Steel should be prosecuted for his intentional act. It is neithe r a small infraction nor one that should be overlooked. He was wrong, and he knew it. . As a Costa Mesa resident now, I do not believe he should be making decisions in my city. JANIE ARNOLD Costa Mesa I did not vote for Chris Steel, nor do I agree with most of his actions as a sitting council member. In my opinion, be is not the best council member we have ever bad But a lot of people voted for him. and Lord knows be seems to be trying hard to do bis damdest. Having said tb4t, I strongly dis- agree with this misplaced effort to remove him. Assuming Steel committed these heinous crimes, l guess I should be thankful that someone bas decided their life's mission should be to expose this master criminal and save the good citizens of our fair community from further acts of deceit. debauchery and shame. But somehow I am not thankful. Th.is ueroar is truly much ado about noth- ing. Was 1t wrong? f suppose so. Should it have been done? Of course not. It is difficult to imagine such a dangerous crime. lf con- • victed, a potential three-year prison sentence for these dastardly deeds hardly seems an ·adequate safeguard for society. I gotta believe there are more important fish to fry. Who has not committed some little sin which would be punishable if caught? Have these saviors of our great city never crossed a street except in a crosswalk? Have these ministers of justi,ce always come to a complete stop before turning right on a red light? Has this posse of truth always paid their taxes, n ever taking a slightly question- able deduction? Have these pillars of society, fin<Jing they weren't charged for an item, always returned the item to the store asking, no, not asking but demanding to pay for it? Somehow, their righteousness bas a rather hollow sound to me. • I suggest if they are ~:.=med about the danger Steel to OQI community, they could m than compen- sate for this by spending 1be same amount of their time and effort assisting some charity or school. This effort to get Steel on America's Most Wanted list represents nothing more than petty bickering seen daily on any kindergarten playground at recess. "Teacher! Teacher! Chris is bothering me." ·Am not.• •Are too." "Am not." •Are too." This is nothing more than an exercise in egotistical bullying and will cost our city time, money and effort, all of which could be .. better spent. It seems lo me this Sherlockian effort to expose the horrendous criminal activity really serves no greater purpose than to act as a salve upon some personal wound completely umelated to the issue at hand. Come on, do something productive. MIKE DUNN Costa Mesa Obtaining the few signatures required for nomination papers is little more than a mere technicality, the purpose of which escapes me. lt might have had a purpose a century ago, but in today's election process, it has lit- tle meaning. It is absolutely incredible to me that some- one would be facing p~n time for making a mistake by helping a person sign her name or that a husband signed for a wife that had no problem with his doing so. To remove the man from office after 10,000 people voted for him is·a far greater sin. Whatever happened to common i;ense? TERRY~OC Newport Beach I was one of the candidates who ran against Chris Steel in the last election -and of course, I didn'tw:in. I think be should stay on the coundl because be ea.med the right with the votes. He made a mistake, but he shouldn't be kicked off. I believe it would not be a problem to see him fined just to make him pay better attention to what he's doing. It was just a technical mistake, but he should be fined so that be is penalized so that he'll remember next time lo be more careful. MICHAEL OJFFORD Costa Nlesa I'm calling lo add my name to the list of people who would encourage Steel to step down and avoid us havirig to have a recall election and further etnbarrassment to the city of Costa Mesa. 6ur city needs to move forward on many issues. He is not my repre- sentative, and I would like lo see us push him behind us. SHARON BOUDREAU Costa Mesa I believe that Steel '5hould lose~ oouocil seat. He would be a bit of a hypocrite given all of his stated beliefs as far as illegal immi- gration, illegal immigrants and his ability to speak so openly about it His intolerance and his supporters, from what I believe is a very hateful Westside group, seem lo teach intolerance of any sort when talking about following the law. I think it wo~d .be important for him to basically practice what he preaches. Therefore, given that he did not bave enough signatures at the time, given·t:hat it was a last minute or so before he had to tum in these papers, he basically didn't follow the law. If be doesn't want to appear as hypocrite, I think he should just step down. RUSS RAMIREZ Costa Mesa Chris Steel should definitely.lose bis seat on the council.
