It-might not be conventionally beautiiulr

A gleaming white bull, a

rippling sails made out of some
preposterously expensive fab-
rlc. In the nautical world, these
are the elements that are often
thought necessary for a "beau-
tiful"~.
But Chuck South's boat
looks a little different. It
appears more like a corroded
collision of Tom Sawyer's raft,
an industrial crane and a Mack
truck.Thestrangecontraption
sports a chugging silver
smokestack, a variety of greasy
winches, miscellaneous bar-
rels full of heavy chain and a
couple acetylene and oxygen
tanks for an underwater torch.
The whole thing is ochre
and brown with oxidation and
grime. If there were boats in
•Blade Runner,# they might
have looked like this.
It is beautiful? Some people
probably don.'t think so, but
South loves it to death. If you
understand the function of all
the machinery on the boat, he
suggested, it's hard not to find
it pretty.
South runs the South
Mooring Co .. one of a handful ·
of businesses in Newport
Beach dedicated to maintain-
ing the moorings that some
boat owners use to tie up their
vessels. The company does
other kinds of work a.round the
harbor, such as driving pilings
into the muddy bottom and
helping to anchor dredging
equipment.
For all these types of tasks,
South's ugly beaut is perfectly
adapted.
The towers that rise up from
its platform in an A-frame can
be used for a variety of tasks,
from dragging up the engine
bodies and propellers that a.re
often used as mooring anchors
to hammering pilings with

heavy weights. Hydraulic rods
called •5l>uds• on the sides of
the boat can be sunk to the
bay bottom, llncboring the
boat.
•The idea is to give us a sta-
ble, stationaJ1 work platform
when the boat is lifting objects
that weigh several tons,• South
said.
Not every job requires all
of the tools on the boat, but
South likes having his options
open. For certain IOnds of
work, the platform expands
like something from a box of
Legos, with extra equipment
doubling its size. At other

times, the boat can go to work
in a more stripped-down form.
•It's sort of like a fishing
boat," South explained. •You
keep adapting it for different
jobs. With a hydraulic drill on
the front, you can do core.sam-
pling ...
Negotiating all the vari-
ables, from a piloting stand-
point, is difficult. Where the
pleasure cruiser mainly bas to
contend with a steering wheel
and a throttle, South has to
worry about delicate shifts in
weight, the variable consis-
tency of the harbor bottom and
the cballenge of dealing with
objects sunk in several feet of
murky water.

THE HARBOR COLUMN '
Nautical heritage
is slipµng away
I enjoy writing about our harbor,
the boats that sit upon it and the
people that sit upon them. From
time to time, I strike a chord that not
everyone might agree with, and
those readers have been kind
enough to drop me a short note.
It's rare however, to receive a let-
ter that is complimentary in Oliture,
but I guess it's easier to write com-
plaints than kudos. Some are valid,
some are not.
Every once in a while, I'll receive
three or four comments on a column,
and I'm grateful for the interest and
• response no matter which side of the
fence the reader is on. What was
extremely rare, however, is when I
received 63 responses to my April 3
column, •What is happening to
Mariner's Mile?• For those of you
who have since utilized this paper as
fish wrap, let me remind you.
The column addressed the issue of
Newport Beach's disappearing mar-
itime influence. specifically along the
area known as Mariner's Mile. The
second-ever Cbarthouse Restaurant
has been replaced with a Jiffy Lube,
not to mention the car washes, fast
food and fast car dealerships. It made
me wonder why it was named the
Mariner's Mile.
I recenUy observed another car
dealership going into a location that
once housed Thunder Marine. On a
good note, we now have the Miller's
Landing boat brokerage that moved
onto the corner lot at Pad.fie Coast
Highway and Dover Drive -at least
when you come over the bridge and
spot the Mariner's Mile sign and then
look up, you see objects that Ooqt.

Somebody call my agent
I was surrounded by the
strangest and IDOlt inler-

ever encountered -in Orange County.
There were skinny, tan
blonds in tight sweaters and
little Capri pants and stooped
grandmother-types with their
puffy caps of white hair and
flowered dresses.
There were fresh-faced,
buff young men with slicked.-
back hair and bent old gents
with thick eyebrows and hair
growing out of their ears.
Each was nothing out of
the ordinary. But to put them
· all together, sitting atiffly in
rows of uncomfortable notel
banquet chairs, many clutch-
ing photos of their airbrushed
faces, was odd.
As I looked around, I won-
dered what brought them to
this open casting call -what
their stories were.
I did know what brought
Bill Dance and his casting
crew to the Holiday Inn in
Costa Mesa. They were look-
ing for fresh faces with a con-
servative look for two new
movies.
The first, an HBO produc-
tion called "61, • is a flick
about the New York Yankees
and the relationship between
Mickey Mantle and Roger

The second is a TNT movie,
•James Dean,• set in 1954
and 1955. It tells the story of

in an accident in the prime of
his life.
If you're looking for con-

your place. But what of these
aspiring actors and actresses?
Danette Goulet

Were they looking for a

Many had the big bJack-

Each was painstakingly

blue for men, purple for

Gripping dull miniature

bust, hips, waist -if I must.
Pet, car, would you do nudi-

As I sat looking around
and waiting for Dance to
begin, I thought, "These poor
people look so nervous.·
There must have been
between 120 and 150 hope-

the back of the Holiday Inn.
The requirements for the

CasUng director Bill Dance, right, takes a look at Jeremy Seely's photo at an open cast-

Let's leave it at that
Dance stood and intro-

would be expected of people
if cast: Show up tv{o hours
ahead of time with minimal
makeup and be sure to wear
proper underwear. "It's a

them apologetically.
In an theabical, emotional
monologue he explained the
two movies and what they
were looking for.
Then Dance began the
two-fingered point.
You, you and you, come
up here. And you. And you.
First the young men, then
the old men followed by the
older women and the
younger women. I was left sit-
ting with the odds and end of
each category. It was like get-
ting picked for teams in gym
class -I didn't really care
what team I was on as long as
I didn't get picked last.
People around me were so
tense that I started to get but-
terflies in my stomach. For
what. I didn't know.
Phew, I was up next. We .
were paired up and shuffled
outside, where they shot a
Polaroid and sent us on our

And that was that. Don't

Localed between the cylinder head
and the engine block. the head
gasket seals the combuslion
chamber of each cylinder. When a
rough idle and misfiring occurs, it
may be due to a "blown" head
gasket. This refers to failure at the
narrow area between cylinders,
which results in a loss or cylinder
compression and engine misfire. It
is usually caused by engine
overheating, which causes the head
