BALBOA PENINSULA -When it
boils down to the basics, one thing is
clear: No one -not city leaders nor
business owners, and especially not
residents -is particularly happy about
seeing Main Street's ficus trees

The committee recently recom-

taking down the trees, saying it would

•Long-term safety ts a big'
issue with me,• he said,
adding Uaat keeping the
trees also doesn't make
sense from a finandal stand-
point.
City officials would have
to ppend $16,000 to $49,000 a
year to maintain the trees and
deal with damage they might
cause to streets and private
property, said Assistant Qty
Manager Sharon Wood.
And with a total value of
$193,000 for the 25 trees,
that doesn't make sense,
particularly because the
trees won't live that much
longer, she said.
•They are reaching the
end of their lives,• Wood
said, adding that tl)e trees
probably won't live much
more than 20 yea.rs.
"You're spending $7.5
million on all this other stuff,
why not do the trees while
you're at it, especially when
those questions are out
there, about damage and lia-
bility?" she asked.
Known for their invasive
nature, the ficus trees have
dug their way into adjacent
buildings. In one case,
Ridgeway said he wit-

The tree planting forms
part of the city's $7 .5-million
revitalization project for the
downtown area that's sched-

officials recommended the
willow over two other species
for several reasons.
Because coral trees have
already been chosen for Main

species to the peninsula's traf-

opposed the removal of the
trees a few months ago.
She added, however. that
few residents still feel as
strongly about the trees as her.
Elaine Llnhoff is one resi-
dent who seems to fit that
profile.
She said the new trees
probably won't create a
street canopy like that of the
ficus but has resigned her-
self to t,he fact that the old
trees need to be replaced
because of the maintenance
costs.
"I can't justify keeping"

Hlgh boys Lennis coach Tim Mang
called the first Sea Kings-Brent-

unbelievable match.• And that was
just a nonleague tilt four matches
into the season.
Seventy-eight days later, the two
powerhouses meet once again in
today's CIF Southern Section Divi-
sion V final at the Claremont Club,
beginning at 11:30. The adjectives,
as well as the level of tennis, should
be at an all-time high. In the previ-
ous encounter, CdM pulled out a
dramatic 10-8 victory.
•nus is the two best teams in CIF

1n their previous showdown with
the defending Division IV champion
Eagles, the Sea Kings dominated in
singles, winning seven of nine sets,
while struggling in doubles, losing
six of nine.

lJ was hardly Babe Ruth calling his shot. but 1t made a Fn-
day afternoon freeway foray mto the Inland Empire a dnve
won't soon forget.
Costa Mesa High senior Carlos Franco chose an unusual
time to say hello during the CIF Southern Secbon DIV1S1on IV
baseball playoff game at Bonita High. with tus Mustangs
trailing. 4-3. just two outs from elimination.
It was the seventh inning and 1 was watching from behind
the backstop when Franco strode to the plate after Nick
Cabico drew a one-out walk .
Glancing up from my scorecard, I found Franco's gaze
fixed on me and he pointed directly at me with tus right
index fmger, before quickly· directing his attention back to
digging into the batter's box. I nodded and smiled, the same
smile Franco bad induced many times the last three years. as
I've thoroughly enjoyed his uniquely emotional approach to
competition as well as our periodic. though bnef, mteracttons.
Franco, who had already stroked RBI singles in the hrst
and third innings. promptly smacked a rut-and-run single
through the vacated shortstop hole to put rµnners at the cor-
ners, as the Mustangs went on to tie the game and force
extra innings.
After touching fists with the first base coach, Franco, once
again, looked and pointed my direction. Tius time, I pomted
back, to acknowledge his dutch accom-
plishment.
The eighth Costa Mesa error of the
game made Franco the hard-luck losing
pitcher and I empathized as he cradled his
head 10 his hands, when it became dear
the winning run would score on the fateful
play. His season and prep career, like those
of his fellow seniors, were finished and be
appeared, at once, besieged.by disbelief,
sadness and finality.
After interviewing both coaches about
the game, I approached the inconsolable
Franco, shook his hand and told him be
had made it tun to watch.
I can only hope I got my point across.
