On Monday, the U.S.

~ased on a Texas case
over whether or not a
prayer could be said before

the Really High, Court said
"No way. no how, knock it
off.•
The actual ruling con-
tained a little more legalese
than that, but you get the
point. Likewise, Costa
Mesa's athletic directo and
baseball coach, Kirk Bauer-
meister, was no less to the ·
point.
"lf anyone has a problem
with praying, they have a
problem with life,• said
Coach Kirk.
A little philosophical for
a baseball coach, but well
said, say 1. The tradition of
saying a brief, voluntary
team prayer before Mus~
tang games will go on -
with or without the
Supreme Court's, well,
blessing, said the coach.
How do these things get
started? Let's review.
It's customary at high

Believe it or nof, some
parents at a public high
school had a schmoo over
the pregame prayers, and
filed a complaint. What's
interesting, though, is who
filed 'the complaint.
Was it an agnostic? An
atheist? Did Madalyn Mur-
ray O'Hair finally tum up?
Heavens, no. The original
complaint was filed by two
families -one Catholic and
one Mormon. It is a funny
old world, is it not?
In 1995, the American
Civil Liberties Union, God
bless them, sued the local
school board on behalf of
the two families, claiming
the pregame prayer was a
form of public worship, and
thus unconstitutional. And ·
so for five years, countless
hours and dollars have been
spent by both sides in one
court after another, and now
the highest court in the
land, over whether or not

the two families who were

Speaking for the majority
ln the 6-to-3 decision,
Supreme Court Justice John
Paul Stevens tried to clear it
up for us mortals: •1t sends

an accompanying message
to adherents that they are

Wowski. That's a lot of
meaning stuffed into a five-
second prayer by a sopho-

bad skin. According to Jus-
tice John, you got your
"adherents• and your "non-
adheren ts." In Texas. adher-
ents believe in God. Nonad-
herents believe in Troy Aik-
man. Apparently, at the
moment the pregame
prayer is done. the concern
is that small groups of non-
adherents will grab their
seat cushions and say, •Let's
go, honey. They don't want
us here. Dam adherents!"
The underlying issue
he re, though, is that the two
families, the American Civil
Liberties Union and the
Supreme Court majority are
all missing the point. In

But the little cubbyho es were

And even as the students cor-

It was also one of the last bits

From then on, it was games, games

what I heard, H said his friend,
Clay Adler.
Then they were ofr again. It
was a rousing game of tag in, on
and around the playground.
Young Rush had an ingenious
tagging technique.
He would lie in wait at one of
the curves on the slide so that
when the person who was "ir
came by, he had multiple escape
routes.
HI can either go down or jump
over the side, H he explained.
lt was something be did again
and again,'leaping from heights
that would have surely struck ter-
ror in his mother's heart had she
seen his actions.
As if the adrenaline wasn't
enough, the room mothers pro-
vided a fun snack of almost pure
sugar before students went out to
run relay races.
"I'm sad recess is over, but I'm
glad school's almost out," Rush
said. "We have one more hour.
And that was the crazjest, most
action-packed game of tag we
· have ever played."
A s_canl four hours after the
day began, they placed their
chairs atop their desks and were
declared fifth-graders.
"I'm excited, but kind of sad
too, because I'll be leaving my
class and my teacher, H Rush said.

College district scraps
Lowe's lease plan
' • Proposal to lease its headquarters for a
Lowe's Home Improvement branch was killed
before it got off the ground.
AndNW Glazer
D AILY PILOT
COSTA MESA
Lowe's is a no-go, the
Coast Community. College
District board decided
u nanimously Wednesday
night. .
Representatives from
Lowe's Home Centers Inc.
said last month the Adams
Avenue property would
have been a prime location
for the upscale store, but
no formal project proposal
has been submitted . The
company is amid a $2-bil-
llon nationwide expansion
effort.
"The district always
needs outside funds," said
John 0 . Renley, vice chan-
cellor or human resources.
•Tue board has to decide
what parameters it should
set in getting them.•
On top of the world
The board had consid-
ered moving• its offices
from Adams Avenue and
leasing the land to the
North Carolina-based
hardware store chain to
open a branch there. The
revenue would have
h elped fund three of the
district's community col-
leges without requiring a
tax hike.
But neighbors a nd
board members felt the
location wasn't right for a
hardware store.
"By converting a grassy
low-rise district office into
a large hardware store, the
neighborhood would
change,• board president
Jerry Patte rson said. •It
would bring traffic and
other things there.•
The decision not to pur-
sue Lowe's does not pre-
clude the board from
seeking another tenant for
the property, Patterson
said.
But he said the board
might consider leasing
only part of the land a nd
keeping its offices there.
And he said he hoped
developers of homes or
apartments, which would
be more appropriate there,
would matte offers.

COSTA MESA -Underneath a yellow
"Welcome Home" banner Thursday, a tri-
wnphant group was Dipping through pho-
tos of their five-day adventure.
The Trailblazers, a team of five develop-
mentally disabled men, along with nine
volunteers, climbed the highest mountain
in the continental United States, Mount
Whitney, in California's High Sierras.
1Wo of the men reached the summit,
which is more than 14,000 feet above sea
level.
•1t was really fun, hiking in the snow,"
said Tun Jones, 27, who has Down Syn-

crossing a stream with a backpack nearly
his size mounted on his back. The picture
was shot too far away to capture his
expression.
·1 think I was both laughing and cry-

chuckle inside the warm Rockreation Sport

the reception. They tolp tales -some
apocryphal -of bear sightings, sliding on
snow, bursting lungs and bloody feet.
"It was a goal and I made it, "·said Paul
Hollingsworth, 42, one of two Trailblazers
who made the swnmit. "I'd do it again in a
heartbeat."
And he will. Young recruited
Hollingsworth, whose foreanns are as wide
as aicket bats and calves like Roman
columns-to help lead next year's expedi-
tion.
"This experience really gave them a
new reference point," Young said. "They
kfiow their physical limits. They have a
better idea or what they can and can't do.•
Trailblazer Ron Holland, 32, said he
learned a valuable life lesson from the
adventure:
"You just keep telling yourself, "you can

Once the plants gel into

And the same problems
that have affected the

DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH -Fun is

romance that hasn't always
been roses and peddles.

known as the XXV

Balboa Yacht Club.
But it hasn't always been
smooth sailing for Mr. Irrele-
vant honorees and their signifi-
cant others.
One in particular, Weber
State tight end Cam Quayle
two years ago, broke off his
engageme:nt to the girl he had
pld.Oned to marry only a month
later, before entering training
camp with the Baltimore
Ravens.
•After that bip to Newport
Beach,· Quayle said from train-
ing camp in early August '98,
before he was cut by the
Ravens, "I kind of realized
maybe we shouldn't be mar-
ned, because we were always
arguing or bickering, and I real-
ized if we can't just totally relax
and have fun, then maybe get-
ting married is not the best
thing."
Fun is important.
Quayle, Mr. Irrelevant xxm.
was later picked up by the
Jacksonville Jaguars and allo-

Quayle told rw officials
Monday mommg he was still in

XX.V will cause no ill-fated
results in bis relationship with
Northwestern State {La.) health

The vivacious Hunter, who
will be a senior in the fall, said
Wednesday night she plans to

in May 2001. ·we haven't
