Course to hit a few balls Monday, but ·
became a hero after resuscitating an
elderly man who had collapsed near the prac-
tice tee.
John Krueger was tuning up his swing on
the driving range with his wife, Jo, when he
heard a call for help over the loudspeaker.
Someone needed medical assistance imme-
diately.
Krueger flew into action -not a usual reac-
tion for someone without a medical back-
ground. Still, he knew some CPR.
The Kruegers, who are visiting from Tempe,
Ariz., found the man surrounded by a few oth-
ers .. The onlookers were concerned, but hesi-
tated to step in and help.
The man had stopped breathing, so
Krueger knew he had to act fast. He began
cardiopulmol1ary resuscitation.
"He was pretty far gone," Krueger $aid.
•His eyes were fixed and he was turning
blue.~. .,
Sheila Dickens stood nearby with a first-aid
kit, ready to jump in if Krueger couldn't con -
tinue. Dickens, an Orange resident, works as a
sports massage therapist and knew to check
the man's pulse. Someone else held the man's
head and another held his hand.
The man started to breathe again, but
remained unconscious. He stopped breathing a
short time later, and Krueger started CPR
again.
"It was gnarly," Dickens said. •A lot of peo-
ple wouldn't have jumped in there. I was real-
ly proud of him."
Paramedics arrived and hooked up the man
to a monitor because he appeared to be in car-
diac arrest, said Capt. Dave Mais of the New-
port Beach Fire Department.
He said because of the quick-thinking res·
cuers, the man was in better condition than
they had anticipated.
"Their actions produced positive results."
Mais said. •A lot of ~es people don't step in,
but we try to encourage them to."
Autho.rlties did not release the man's name.
He is being treated at Hoag Hospital.
Krueger, who works as a financial planner,
learned CPR a fe~ years ago and was happy
to be of service. After the rescue, he returned
to his goll game.

The Greenlight measure proposes to
give voters the final say on certain "ma1or"
developments. However, the process to
decide which projects would trigger a vote
is very complex. To determine if a citywide
election would be necessary, officials
would determine if the 46 9-istinct neigh-
borhoods in the city are built to capacity.
In addition to the proposed develop-
ment, officials must add 80% of the pro-
jects that prompted changes to the gener-
al plan in the last decade. The accumulat-
ed total would indicate whether the pro-
posed development requires a vote.
The miscalculation occurred at this
point, Bludau said.
"Paul assumed every amendment
would add to this total,· Beek explained,
"But if Greenlight had been in effect, larg-
er projects would I!_Ot be added to the total
because they would have to be voted on.
Smaller projects that did not get voted on
would add to the total, though."
While Douglas calculated there would
be as many as 18 projects that would have

Fourth sparks memories 9/ Good Old Days
M ost of us who are
enjoying (spell that
enduring) various
stages of senility love to bore
our audiences with stories of
the Good Old DC\ys, which
often, upon closer inspection,.
weren't quite that great.
With the Fourth of July
just around the comer, I have
been remembering the
Fourth of July celebrations of
the Good Old Days.
In Balboa, we spent the
night of the Fourth trying to
burn Balboa Island to the
ground by shooting skyrock-
ets across the bay while the
Balboa Islanders did the "
same to us. The sight of those
skyrockets passing ea91 oth-
er over the middle of the bay
was inspiring. Meanwhile,
homeowners spent the night
crouched. on their roofs with
garden hoses firmly in hand.
There was no limit on the
explosive power of firecrack-
ers. Some had just a tad less
punch than the bombs
dropped during Desert
Storm, and it sounded much
like a battlefield. And then
some genius discovered. that
by putting a firecracker in a
tin, you could Increase the
"boom~ factor considerably.
The trick was to get the
firecracker into the can, light
it and put the lid on without
being maimed by a prema-
ture explosion. But the result-

All of which brings me to
Balboa's biggest boom, and
Louie Dixon.
When I was a young man,
a helluva long time ago,
Louis Dixon 'was the toughest
man in town. Just what he
did to earn that title I do not
know. He worked at Rodgers
Boat Works, located just west
of the Pavilion, and was
always polite, quiet, soft-spo-
ken and went out of his way
to be nice to us kids.
Of course, whether he was
really the toughest man in
town was kind of academic
because he was an authentic,
honest-to-God hero.

We would fill crowd onto
the end of the Balboa Pier
and watch as Louie crouched.
down in the cockpit and
bounced across the waves on
some record-setting run. Of
course, the craft had 16
exhaust pipes spewing car-
t)on monoxide back into
Louie's face, and how he
lived through that I do not
know.
But Louie cemented. him·
self into the top position in
my own pantheon of heroes
when he blew up the iron
pipe one Fourth of JUly.
Facing ihe alley running
between Bill Ireland's Bar
and Al Rothgary's gambling
joint was a small structure -
which from the four-inch pipe
running up its side I assume
was a toilet.
On this particular Fourth
ol July, Louie acquired some
dynamite and conceived. the
idea of dropping the dyna-
mite down the pipe, putting a
lid on the pipe and thus mak-
ing the biggest boom the
town had ever heard.
So Louie climbed up on
the shack, fixed a detonator
onto the dynamite, lit the
fuse, dropped the dynamite
down the pipe, slapped an
iron plate on the top of the
pipe, jumped off the shack
and ran up the alley toward
Main Street.
He didn't make it.
He only got about 20 feet
from the shack wben the
dynamite went off. However,
instead of blowing that iron
lid to Jupiter or Mars, the
pipe exploded and blew
many, many pieces of iron
into Louie's back.
Dr. Gordon Grundy spent
the next few hours picking
all these pieces of iron pipe
out of Louie's back. Of
course, it was all worth it
because ev~ though it didn't
go exactly as planned, it was
one humongous explosion.
And Louie had assumed
the position as the toughest
man in town because, of
course, he had endured Dr.
Grundy's ministrations with-
out a whimper -although
he did move rather gingerly
for a few days.
Our carefree Fourth of July
days came to an end when
some idiot threw a lighted
firecracker through a window
of the Rendezvous into a
crowd of dancers and blew
out the eye of a young girl.
All of a sudden, the tradi-
tional way of celebrating the
Fourth of July in Balboa was-
n't funny anymore.
Shortly thereafter, the city
banned fireworks and the
Good Old Days were no
more. No loss.

Proposed site for center is good one
By Dorf Gregory
R egarcting your editorial of
· June 17, ·ubrary land
should stay as is": I think,
finally, that a definitive clarifica-
tion needs to be made, so as to
correct misirnpressions and misin-
formation about the center that
seems to be circulating.
That the editorial points up the
nobility of the cause saves me the
problem of having to convince
anybody of the project's validity. It
seems the question the Daily Pilot
has is the site.
On the surface, the question of
our desired site seems reasonable.
Why should it abut the library?
What about looking for other
places?
The answer is that we have
' . looked, and any other site would
be disadvantageous to the concept
of this arts and education center.
First of all, the Central Library
is the planned cultural center of
Newport Beach.
· Second, it is vital that the arts
and education center abut the
library, so there is a single entity
of learning available to the public,
with an accent on our children,
who need the accessibility that
this location provides.
Third, Fashion Island is the
center of gravity for Newport
Beach and the upper and lower
bay areas don't suit this kind of
endeavor.
Fourth, this particular area is
perfect for traffic disbursement.
And to that end , the center will
provide much-needed additional
parking for the library and any
other usage deemed appropriate
Culture .is the

for the rest of
the acreage
remaining,
after our 3.5-
acre portion
is used. After
all, there are
12 acres
there. We're
only asking
for a bit more
than a quar-
ter of it.
As to the lost views about
which your editorial speaks: There
won't be any lost. impaired, slight-
ly impaired or damaged views.
This center will not rise above
MacArthur Boulevard and will
have a landscaped roof, under
which will be the parking garage
mentioned above.
This isn't about asking for
everything. It's about asking for
something that is vital to our chil-
dren, in a place th'at makes sense
for all concerned.
There is more than 5,000
square feet of open space in our
city. No one is looking to compro-
mise any spaces used from time to
time as a haoitat. No one seeks to
tamper with vernal pools. But in
any open-space concept. surely
some of these things would need
lo be disturbed to build anything.
Culture is the heart of any city
and is central to the growth of
character fOr its people.
Surely, there must be a way of
working together. There's enough
land for all, if a true and sincere
coalition can be formed.

Some want new Dunes project, other~ don't
AT ISSUE: The Newport
Beach City Council is
scheduled to consider t he
proposed Dunes resort at
its meeting tonight.
I am in my early 20s._ working
two jobs so I can live in New-
port Beach. In my Newport
Heights area, many of the old-
timers talk about being former
reeway fighters, stopping the
coast freeway and high-rises
around the bay.
Boy, do I have news for them.
Yes, they were right about not
having a freeway d1viding our
. city, but
R d height ea ers around the RESPOND bdy seems
to be chang-
ing fast.
Last year, the Balboa Bay C lub
(on public-owned property) got
an extension on the proposed
new hotel for 22 feet above max-
imum height for a portion of the
dub.
This year. the Dunes Hotel (on
public-owned property) is asking
for an even higher variance above
the 35-foot height limit around the
bay. With three more hotels being
discussed around the bay -
Ardell's on Pacific Coast Highway,
Via Udo Marina and the Ameri-
can Legion Posl/Marinapark prop-
erty (publicly owned) -my ques-
tion is this: what will be the next
request to go above the 35-foot
height limit, to block views and
make us look like Miami Beach?
And where will the traffic go?
Of interest lo me was the
Dunes Hotel victory party held
right after the Planning Commis-
sion voted in favor of their project,
with a council member in atten-
dance.
Now help me understand that
one. The Dunes Hotel project is
set for public hearing by the City
Council and an open public hear-
ing will be held to hear both sides
and judge the pros and cons.
Should we ask ourselves if a fair
vote will be taken or as I read
from the "victory party,· have
minds already been made up?
Sorry •old-timers,• but maybe

light. I know I will be voting "yes"
come November.
NATHAN BRADLEY
Newport Beach
For some time, I have followed
the proposed development of the
Newport Dunes resort hotel with
interest. Owing this time, I have
been very impressed by the
responsiveness to community con-
cerns of the developer, who has
successfully operated Newport
Dunes and other hotels for many
years, and the quali\y of the
development.
It is not often that a municipali-
ty cannot only add to its tax base
but, at the same time, see a truly
first-class resort be developed. Not
only will this enhance Newport
Beach as a desired resort destina-
tion, but it will also add mu ch-
needed facilities for use of its resi-
dents.
Perhaps those few who criticize
the project should take the time to
carefully look at what is proposed
and the benefits foi: our city.
STEWART R. SUCHMAN
Newport Beach
I was pleased to read that so
many Newport Beach residents
attended the council meeting to
express their opposition to the
Dunes resort.
It's beginning to seem that the
members of our Planning Com-
mission who are in favor of this
huge project have taken Lessons
from Costa Mesa's Planning Com-
missjon.
Beginning in the 1950s, Costa
Mesa began to look like a town
where no one cared and it terrifies
me to think that Newport Beach is
headed in the same direction.
We have plenty of commerce in
our community and to continue to
add more businesses that will
bring more people and more traf-
fic is a shame.
Newport Beach had and can
still have a charming ambience,
but only if we have dec:ision-mak-
ers who have the courage to reject

We have lived in Newport for
40 years -from the Heights to
the Peninsula to Newport Coast,
and now Bayside Village. We
have seen good changes and bad
ones. The Dunes project is an
excellent addition, Inviting a
relaxed abnosphere. Th.is project
reflects a wonderful, new first-
class hotel that will occupy an
area that is a complete eyesore.
Yes, Newport has character, but
our planners and leaders need to
clean up the many areas that have
turned our Newport into less than

The Dunes project is a welcome

Bad hair days:
It's a ll on
your head
I 'm in the process of recovering
from a severe mjury inflicted to
my head.
Specifically I'm talking about
my last haircut. I'm three weeks
into the new growth, and only
now has my hair grown back long
enough for me to comb. That
should tell you Just how bad it was
to begm with .
Some people have bad hair
days. So far, J une has been a bad
hair month.
Unlike most bad choices people
make, bad haircuts cannot be hid-
den away. They sit there, atop
your head. JUSt waiting for some-
one to laugh or express remorse.
In my case, no scissors were
involved. I asked for ·a little left
on the top to part.• which was
somehow misinterpreted as
"sheared to the skull.•
I knew I was in trouble when
the first instrument the stylist
grabbed was an electric raz9r
instead of scissors. I'm not sure,
but I think she had to pick some
wool out of the clippers before she
aimed it at my hairline. With the
first swipe, I knew I was doomed.
I came oul of the cha.Jt looking
like a cross between a newborn
and the elder men of my· family,
male pattern baldness and all. The
removal of so much hair served
only to highlight where my scalp
would eventually shine like a mjr-
ror, possibly blinding pilots m low-
flying aircraft.
And other than wearing a base-
.. ball <!ap or stocking up on a whole
new collection of fesbve berets.
there's no g~ way to draw atten-
tion away from the big mistake on
your head. You know that every-
one notices, but you say nothing
and act as though that'~ exactly
how you want your head to look.
Children laugh, dogs bark and
adults avert their eyes as you walk
down the street.
A good haircut, of course. has
the opposite effect. Suddenly
you're walking a foot taller. confi-
dent in all you do. You look at oth-
ers defiantly, as though to say,
•bow to the power of my follicles"
or something lo that effect.
One solution to avoiding the
bad haircut rrught be to add some
nontraditional coloring. If you
walk out into the world with blue
hair, everyone will be so distracted
by the hue that they'll pay no
attention to tne rest of your hair,
good or bad.
Someday we'll probably be
able to punch our haircut prefer-
ences into a home computer,
which will then fire laseB at us to
keep us perlectly coiffed. Until
then, we have to rely on the styl-
ists' abilities to interpret our vague
directions.
Until then, we're at the mercy
of the stylists, although I suppose I
might as well enjoy these follicle
follies while I can. Barring any
mirede drug therapies, I expect
that l have maybe five yean left
before my paternal genes (bUl
