NEWPORT BEACH -After hours
of debate over the proposed Newport
Dunes resort Tuesday night, the City
Council moved to postpone its vote on
the controversial project until Sep-
tember.
Mayor John Noyes said he sug-
gested the delay because not all of the
council members would be present at
any single meeting in July or August.
·1 strongly believe that on a gener-
al plan amendment this large and a
project this large. we owe the citizens
full deliberations with the full council
there," Noyes said.
The council majority agreed with
Noyes and voted 5-1 to delay the
vote, with Councilman Gary Adams
dissenting. Councilman Tod Ridge-
way was riot in attendance.
Tun Quinn, project manager for
the proposed 47d-rooni hotel and
31,000-square-foot convention center,
said be was shocked by the delay.
•We believe that this is really uruair to Newport Dunes and, more
important, to the hundreds of commu-
nity members who have participated
in the process-by attending multiple
hearings, speaking, writing letters,
and really wanted to see a decision,•
Quinn said.

MIND OVER MATIER
As a yoga instructor, Juris Zin-
bergs teaches people bow to bend
their bodies into complex and twist-
ed positions for exercise. He leads
25 classes weekly throughout
Orange County, including ones at
the Yoga Place in Costa Mesa. He's
often hired by corporations to teach
employees how to relax.
·1 feel like one of my jobs is to
help people reconnect to something
less intense, because the corporate
world takes a toll on bodies,• Zin-
bergs said.
LIVING OUTSIDE THE B<)X
It's only been a few years since
Zinbergs, 32, was part of the corpo-
rate world, working in a cubicle. He
worked in the restaurant manage-
ment business and traveled nation-
wide to teach others how become
part of the food chain.
Business life wore down Zin•
bergs, who said he became stressed
out and obese over time. He knew
there was something else out there
to accomplish in bis life.
Everything changed when. be
discovered yoga. It soon became -a
major part of bis lifestyle.
Zinbergs knew th1s was the
change he was waiting for. He stud-
ied yoga for five years in order to
become a professional.
He doesn't regret the change.
"It's not the most financially grat-
ifying,• Zinbergs said. "But in terms
of what I've done with my body and
mind, I have a sense of well-being
that's more gratifying.•
BREATHING BElWEEN THE UNES
Zinbergs' daises fma! people to
focus on their breathing tecbniquel. He
says there's a relationship between
breathing and conscious behavior.
When people are me111 e d ou;. they take
shorW breaths. But when the mind is
reJaxed. tnathing slows down.
"Deep breaths be1p you reconnect
with what's important in your life.;._
Zinbergs said. •
PRACTlCJNG WHAT HE PREAOfES
'After a day loaded with classes,
Zinbergs finds time to relax at home.
Sometimes it's through meditation;
other times it's through deep breath-
ing and reflection.
But to spice things up a bit, he's
training to run in a triathlon.

_Touch greatness dr jusi have fun in the OVer-55-leagu,e
C harlie Brown called
the other day trying
to scare up recruits for
his over-55 softball team
called the Newport Peers. At
81 , Charlie is the world's old-
est third baseman with two
artificial knees. I can't prove
that, but it must be true.
Charlie made his living -
and still does -as a New-
port Beach Realtor, largely I
suspect, lo support his base-
ball habit.
I thanked him for recog-
nizing my obvious allileti-
tjsm and eeking me out for
his team. A long pause fol-
lowed, after which Charlie
said: ·1 don't think you --
understand. We weren't
recruiting you. We just
thought maybe you would
mention it in your column.•
Well, I could have told
him that I don't shill for just
anybody -unless they let
me play, of course -but
since baseball decidedly
measures up to my definition
of a vital social resource, I
said I would go along.
Besides, on reOection, I
was sure Charlie knew that
some leg trouble I'm having
makes it diHicull for me to
field a ground ball unless it
bounces up to my chest.
So I met with Charlie and
his friend and co-Peer, Bo
Bett (a longtime former
coach, retired from the Gar-
den Grove school district), to
discuss the team's needs. Bo
summed them up pretty well
when he said: "We're look-

will show up for the games.•

The game is slow-pitch
Softball, played every Sun-
day throughout the year,
mostly at Murdy Park in
Huntington Beach. Games
are seven innings with a lim·
it of five runs J)er inning until
the last inning, when the
sky's the limit.
There is no sliding c1.nd no
tag plays at home plate. The
runner follows a line outside
the base path and mus t beat
the throw home.
Teams play in four over-55
leagues, rated by skill within
specified age brackets. Some
of the players are pretty
skilled. Former Angel out-
fielder Jim Edmonds' grand-
father, a t 71, for example,
plays on on e of the teams. Bo
says of him: •He's a better
fielder than Jin1. He doesn't
have to dive for balls. He
gets them on the run. ft
The leagues' biggest
problems are conflicts with
church for the morning
games and family demands
that divert the players.

A few years ago, the
leegue bad a team called the
Kardiac Kids, made up
exclusively of players who
had experienced heart
surgery. No known crisis
occurred within this group,
but Bo and Charlie remem-
bered one heart attack that
took place on the field. For-
tunately, two of the opposing
players were doctors, and .
they .got the victim off safely
to a hospital before the game
was resumed .
Charlie, who is a prodi-
91ous hitter and a
rei.pectable fielder with a
strong drul, has only one real
problem: getting to first base.
Outfielders keep trying to
throw rum out there on hits
to the outfield. Once he's
safely at first, the Peers can
use ..i pinch runner.
But thdt was not always
the Cdse ....,,th Charlie, who
once played a year of minor
league professional baseball
and might have had a shot al
the bigs under different cir-
cumstances.
Charlie was 26 and just
out of the Anny when he

bw gh Pirates in 1945. Char-
lie hdd been wounded as an
tnfclntry platoon lead.er in
Germany during World War
II, and by the time he arrived
in Pittsburgh he had a wife
and baby IO support.
But American men
weaned on baseball -as
our generation was -don't
walk away from big league
tryouts. And Charlie didn't.
He performed well
enough that the Pirates
signed him and sent him off
the next day to a farm team.
But after a year of minor
league ball at starvation-lev-
el wages, C~arlie knew l)e
was getting into the game
too late and had to move on .
One vivid f(lemory of that
experience has stuck in his
mind, however, through the
more than five-decades
since. Only on the day of his
tryout did he meet up with
any of the ma1or league
players. And only one mem-
ber of the team took the tune
or made the effort to say hel-
lo to the rookie Just returned
from the war. ~ name WdS
Pete Coscardrt, dJld he spent
eight years as a second base-
man for the Pirate!> d.!lci the

Charlie never forgot, so he

NEWPORT BEACH -It took the
swells nine days to travel the 7 ,000 miles
from New Zealand, and dozens of body-
surfers and sunbathers, with flippered
feet and pink noses, greeted them at
The Wedge on We~esday.
"This is great fun," said Lori Hoskins,
66, who watched the 6-foo\ swells and
those trying t~ ride them crash onto the
sand. "11' looks' like they're going to
break the bodysurfers right in half."
But Newport Beach lifeguard Keith
l::!ead, who stole a nap in his white pick-
up truck while an understudy kept her
eyes on the break:, said he didn't need to
make any rescues Wednesday.
Lifeguards said they made 42 rescues
elsewhere in Newport Beach,. which
was not bad for a sunny day that drew
about 45,000 to area beaches.
The waves, born from a storm in New
Zealand, were expected to get bigger by
Friday, said Chris Borg, a meteorologist
from Surfline Huntington Beach, a wave
forecasting service.
Waves at The Wedge, a world-famous
bodysurfing brea!c, can grow as tall as
15 to 20 feet.
Some jaded wave-watchers were
unimpressed.
"Today they're weak sauce,• said Ben
Beckmann, 22, meaning the waves
weren't big enough to draw him from his
towel. "I'll bave to be back on Friday.•
Beckmann, who will be a senior at
UC Berkeley in the fall, was joined by
three high school friends who were also
home for summer break.

"We've been coming to The Wedge
for the last five or so summers," said
Travis Overley, 22, who studies in
Moscow. He wore tight, short European-
style swim trunks, which his baggy
shorts-wearing counterparts did not fail
to notice.
"Italian short shorts I• said Matt Gard-
ner, 22, wagging his head in disbelief.
While the foursome had no plans to
dive into the surf Wednesday, they did
plan to end their day as they end every
summer day at the beach.
"At Ruby's,• Beckmann said, "sip-

The Escada fall line, pre-
viewed for The Fashionables,
is exquisite. Isn't it always,
say you fashion mavens?
Indeed, Escada is known for
classic tailoring and the
fine$t of fabrics.
For the fall season the
accent will be subtle, sexy, a
bit looser, very artistic and
younger in attitude. Models
paraded outfits fashioned in
leather as soft as butter, with
colors that jumped oU their
bodies. Rich, very rich shades
of orange, and reds with deep
magenta undertones, sky blue
hues with shimmering hand-
beading done in India (by
men for those who need the
information) and, of course,
plenty of classic blacks,
browns and grays made a
statement for autwnn.
Gloria Osbrlnk took home
the Escada raffle prize, and
each of the gals accepted a

Thartning Issay is tlie other Sotrer'Sfiidden-gem
A friend of mine recent-
ly commented that all
the best restaurants in
Orange County seem to be
in strip malls and wondered
if I knew why. I didn't have
an answer but promised my
friend.that I knew of a great
restiUrant that wasn't any-

. I WU thinking of Jssay in
Newport Beach, the channing
northern Italian eatery owned
by Michiko Soffer.
lssay is
Di I housed in iYI awhite-R Ew washed
CapeCod-
style cot-
tage on old Newport Boule-
vani, just north of Sid's, the
notorious local hangout that
happens to be owned by
Michiko's ex, Sid Soffer.
While Sid's gets weekly doses
of local press, Issay keeps a
low profile, attracting a loyal
following of locals for good
northern Italian cuisine pre-
pared by chef Paolo Pestarino.
The restaurant's name
means "first generation• in
Japanese, and that's what
Michiko is -;-the first genera-
tion of her family in America.
Michiko opened the
restaurant as a sushi bar.
When her sushi chef called
one night to say he couldn't
show up for work, Michiko
called an Italian friend who
happened to be a chef and
asked him to come cook din-
ner. The rest is local history.
lssay is a bright, airy place
that has a casual, relaxed
tone. A long, open kitchen
runs along the main dining
room, creating a bustling
excitement as the chefs pre-
pare the evening's fare. Most
of the windows are lined
with empty wine bottles,
which I've been informed
are remnants of previous
dinners. I'm happy to report
my friends and I added a few
to the collection.
The menu offers items
from various regions of Italy,
with an emphasis on Paolo's
home area: Piedmont. The
focus is on freshness, and
many of the restaurant's bet-
ter dishes are written on the
evening's speoclls board.
For starters, try the
bruschetta ($5.50). Diced
tomatoes are tossed with
chopped garlic, basil, capers
and bits of chopped black
olives. The mixture is piled
atop crusty slices of Italian
country bread and drizzled
with extra virgin olive oil. It'~
an exciting combination for
the palate that's augmented
by more capers dlld olives -

An excellent choice is the

the special board from time

porcini mushroom mixture

not usually a fan of cream-

was light enough, and the
acidity of the white wine
perfectly complemented the

Another specials board

• Keep opinions in your

It is telling that Jean Forbath, who
lives in Mesa Verde, would dpmand
that folks should give up their quality
of life to provide more housing in Cos-
ta Mesa. (~Mailbag,· ~une 22). She
even goes so far as to iffiply th~~
thing less would be sinful and . nus reader has trouble accepting \
the statement that finding room for '
everyone to live-in Costa Mesa is a
critical social issue.
Porbath shouldn't throw a guilt trip on her neighbors to fulfill her goals.
A quick scan of the Costa Mesa
zoning map shows that Porbath lives
in an area that is immune to the
scourge of small-lot subdivisions.
Unlike the folks on the East Side, who
will suffer from a
MAILBAG reduced quality of

The idea that more density is A-OK
because the Standard Pacific.develop-
ment is surrounded with commercial
anct high-density residential uses is
ridiculous. That argument is akin to
saying "Costa Mesa is full of blight, so
let's build more blight.•
To those who cry out for more
housing in Costa Mesa, I ask: Where
do we draw the line?
Costa Mesa already has the highest
ratio of rental to owner-occupied
housing in the state of California,
among cities of comparable size.
In conclusion I encourage Forbath
to give freely that which is hers, but
please do not covet the quality of life
of others to meet the needs of her
social work.

Teachers should have
competitive salaries
As a resident of Newport Beach
and a property owner, I have news for
Judy Franco.
.Yes, good programs and small
classes help keep teachers happy. But
the bottom line is: Good salaries and
good benefits will do much more to
attract and retain quality teachers.
Thar is the premise at the base of
our capitalistic system. And for the

More than one theory of ,
evolution needs t.o be taught ··
I agree with school board trustee
Wendy Leece regarding teaching oth-
er theories of man's origin (•Text-
books' theories have not fully evolved,
Leece says" June 17).
There are two unfortunate conse-
quences when only one theory is pre-
sented to sti.ldents: ·
1. Children do n<?t usually compre-
hend that evolution_ Js only a theory,
and they end up assuming it is a sci-
entific fact.
2. The above causes confusion for
many who believe in the Bible.
Taught in church and at home from
an early age that Goel created them
and oftep uncomfortable in question-
ing authority, their quandary intensi-
fies and can create problems.
The above need not happen.
There is growing data accumulated
by respected professionals in the field
of science that makes the theory of
•mteJligent design" credible and even
compatible with certain aspects of
evolution. It is certainly worthy of pre-
sentation to students in a science
dassroorn.
Explai.ping two theories offers
opportunities for student dilcuslion,
clarification and understanding.
Man's origin is of vital concern to

hen the statewide Acade-

rankings were issued in
January, local school
leaders had reason to both rejoice and
reflect.
The rejoicing came with th~ news
that Andersen Elementary School
scored a county high of 933, also 14th
in the state.
The reflection came later for New-
port-Mesa school district officials, who
unfortunately also .had to note that just
a few miles away in Costa Mesa, Wil-
son Elementary School students posted
a bottom 10% score of 443 -a 500-
point gulf compared to their Andersen
counterpp.rts.
School officials cried that to compare
the two was apples and oranges.
Daily Pilot
It's wrong to compare Wilson stu-
dents, who are largely new to the Eng-
lish language, to the more proficient
native English language speakers ·at
Andersen, school leaders explained.
But aside from language, perhaps
there is another factor that is key to
Anqersen's ability to churn out top-
notch students: parental involvement.
DON LEACH I DAILY PILOT
Jason Anaya, 7, reads a book while hls mother, Juana, sits with Brianna, 4, In their
Costa Mesa home. The family graduated from Wilson Elementary's Famllies and
Schools Together program. In which parents get involved with their children's s<;hool.
And school officials may have found
a way to spread that idea districtwide.
A program called Families and
Schools Together just completed its
inaugural year on the Wilson campus,
with the graduation of 10 local fami-
lies. If the program's early reviews
prove correq, this could be one way to
emulate Andersen's nurturing parental
environment.
Students are guided through the
program by teachers. who lead families
in gam~s and activities. Children read ·
to their parents for a half-hour a day,
serve them food and, in turn, parents
learn to listen to their child's academic
concerns.
The program has shown results,
school leaders say, and that's exactly
what we need for schools like Wilson.
Instead of repeating the argument
that language is the barrier to higher
fest scores, school officials need to look
for and implement creative solutions.
such as Families and Schools Together.
And maybe, as more of these pro-
grams come to fruition, we will see
both the end of contrasting test scores
in Newport-Mesa, as well ilS the
excuses that perpetuate the same
results year after year.

Have you been as frustrated as I
have been trying to negotiate
Coast Highway from either
Newport Drive on the west or

It is common knowledge that,
over time, traffic throughout
Newport Beach (and elsewhere
in the country) has become more
congested.
I was informed recently that
there are plans afoot to builc:La
hotel/time-share complex/confer-
ence ce.nter at the Dunes. If I can
believe the handbill, a traffic
study approved by the Planning
Commission stated that the hotel
will improve traffic at 36 major
intersections in our city.
They must be talking about
cul de sacs -certainly not Dover
Drive and Coast Highway!
It simply doesn't make sense.
A sizable hotel and convention
center with only one narrow
en!r(lrlce and exit wo~d not only
cause a pileup at the crossroads
of Bayside Drive and Coast
Highway but would further
befoul the existing congestion on
I\ number of major crossroads, as
well as the constant flow of traf-
fic on Coast Highway.
Don't tell me that a large hotel
is not going to complicate an
already existing traffic pollution.
Once again it appears that
commerce and political collusion
weigl} in with the profit motive
over restraint and common cause.
Let's rethink our priorities:
Continue growth and develop-

We have been a part of the

growth and development and
expansion, but it has been order-

For some time now, we have
been without meeting facilities

we have the prospect of a complex
