'Sweet and I-lot'
combs the forest of Arlen
By Tom Titus
A s a composer, Harold Arlen
never really achieved the
superstar status of his col-
.leagues George Gershwin, Irving
:Berlin or Cole Porter. Yet consider
: this: H there hadn't been a Harold
Arlen, there wouldn't have been a
Judy Garland -or at least not the
one we recall so fondly today.
Not only did THEATER Arlen write "Over the Rainbow,• Gar-REYIEW land's signature
number. he com-
posed the entire score of "The Wiz-
ard of oz• and a few other ditties
closely identified with Judy -
•stormy Weather,• "The Man That
Got Away" and "Get Happy,"
among others. Clearly, the guy was
due for a little tribute, even 15 years
after his death.
The Newport Theatre Arts Center
is paying that tribute with •Sweet
and Hot: The Songs of Harold
Arlen," a musical revue composed
entirely of Arlen numbers. Some are
obscure, some are classics, all will
stir nostalgia among the more sea-
soned members of the audience.
As staged by Terry Miller
Schmidt with musicaf direction by
pianist BW Wolf, "Sweet and Hot• is
more the former than the latter. It's a
soft, sentimental homage interrupt-
ed occasionally by a bouncy produc-
tion number and capped, of course,
by "Over the Rainbow• as the grand
finale.
The Newport production is set in
three decades and locales -the
1930s in a nightclub, the '40s at
Coney Island and the '50s on an isle
in the Caribbean. Schmidt's five-
singer company shifts styles and
moods smoothly, blending the
show's overall softer tone with nov-
elty numbers such as "Lydia the Tat-
tooed Lady.•
The singers -Dennis Bryan,
Joanne Lapointe, Nancy Nightin-
gale, Crystal Sutton and Lawrence
Watts -represent a broad genera-
tional gap, but all know their way
around an Arlen song. Choreogra-
pher Roberta Kay keeps the quintet
in tuneful motion.
Nightingale draws arguably the
composer's two best songs, •stonny
Weather• and •The Man That Got
Away," for solo spots and headlines
the company's act-one finale, •Get
Happy.• All are nicely done, but no
threat to Garland's memory.
Watts doubles as bartender and
soloist in the first act, sharing •One
for My Baby• with Bryan and t.aking
the spotlight on •What's Become of
Me?• for a mood-deepening
moment. While hil vocal power may
not approach that of the others, he
excels in the showmanship depart-•
ment.

Project developers have

Planning commissioners
said they felt comfortable ih
moving the project along.
·we went through this
project in detail,· said Com-

ings in which he and bis col-
leagues looked at the project.
While planning commis-

that the Koll developers had
not done enough to deal with
traffic increases that could
result from the project, a
development agreement
between the city and the
developer changed that,
Tucker said.

When they are not trav-

NEWPORT BEACH -The
Dodgers and Mariners, of the
Newport Beach Uttle League's
Ttiple-A, showed what true
championship games are made
of Wednesday at Lincoln Ele-
mentary.
The No. 2-ranked team dur-
ing the regular season defeated
the No. 1 Mariners as those
Dodgers answered a 3-1 deficit
_ with a flve-run fourth inning,
came up with some dutch hits
in the final frame and held off
an M's surge.
•we truly. bad everyone
contribute," said Dodgers'
Coach Jeff Bloom. "All up and
down the lineup, everyone did
tJleir part and that's what
makes this a nice team win."
Protecting an 8-4 lead, the
Dodgers' defense saved its best
work for the the Mariners' last
at-bat. '\After the Mariners
scored two runs with no outs.
Dodgers' Vitcher John Doering
led bis team to victory as he
induced two straight ground-
outs and then struck out the
next batter, ending the game.
The Dodgers (17-4-1) had
turned the tide in the fourth
inning. With one out and the
bases loaded, redemption
came for pitcher Michael
Bloom, who had allowed two
unearned runs in the previous
inning.
Michael Bloom slammed a
shot to right field for a bases-
r:tearing triple, swinging the
momentum to his team.
Dodgers' catcher Grant John-
son singled and later scored by
using bis speed and smarts to
catch the Mariners off guard
with his baserunning.
The Dodgers finished with
five bits as Doering. Michael
Bloom, Johnson and Michael
Artenian collected one hit and
scored one run each. Reed
Zachman came up with a huge
bit when be earned two RBis in
the sixth inning, which proved
to be the difference in the
game.
But, the Mariners did not
give up.' They battled in the11
last at-bat.
