A s a rock 'n ' roll guitarist, Jesse
Ballard has traveled far on bis
talen t. Last month, for
instance, he toured the club circuit
in Poland and Czechoslovakia,
where the crowds not only knew his
name but the lyrics to his songs too.
·Jesse is very popular all over
Europe," said Hans Hartmann, a
record executive in Berlin. •When
Jesse a nd his band go on tour, their
CDs sell by the hundreds each
night..
That's not surprising considering
Ballard -who was born and grew
up in Corona del Mar -spent
almost 20 years playing his brand of
hard-knocking blues and rock music
across Europe, primarily in Berlin.
Ballard's backup group, The Par-
adise Island Band, features Joe
Kucera on saxophone, Nick Jones
on bass and Tommy Goldschmidt on
percussion. Together, they've built a
loyal fan base in cities throughout
Europe and recorded several albums
fo r Ordung and Hartmann, a Berlin-
based recording company.
Hartmann said the band's first
album, "Livin' Like Fire,• sold out
within weeks of being released. The
band's second album, "Return to

Interestingly, Ballard said, for a
short while he, like Jimi Hendrix ..
bought into the idea that he would
have to leave the states to get recog-
nition.
"European audiences aren't as
jaded as American audiences are.
They're more open to different kinds
of music,• Ballard said •Another
difference between audiences in the
U.S. and EW'Ope is that American
audiences don't stop to listen to
bands play music. If they didn't pay
to hear it, then why bother? But in
Europe, it's the opposite.•
The self-taught guitarist said
writing music is his life. And he's
also written a few dozen songs since
he picked up the guitar at age 12.
His early influences came from lis-
tening to music bis mother liked,
including Hany Belafonte, Ray
Charles and Frank Sinatra.
Jesse's mother, Jackie Ballard, is
his No. 1 fan.
•His music isn't bard rock, it's
rock 'n' roll,' said the 74-year-old
Costa Mesa resident. "He's not Mick
Jagger, but he's up there.

Gorman was diagnosed with
osteogenic sarcoma, commonly
known as bone cancer, when he
was 19. He refused to let doctors
amputate his leg, saying he would
rather die.
Instead, with the help of his par-
ents, he located a Los Angeles-
based physician who performed a
limb salvage surgery. The proce-
dure, combined with high-level
doses of chemotherapy, saved his
life -but not his wallet.

To make ends meet, the 220-

Newport-Mesa district approves raises for classified employees
•Thanks to a promise of funds from Gov. Gray Davis,
settlement reached after eight months of negotiations.
Danette Goulet
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT-MESA -After more
than eight months of negotiating,
nearly 800 school clistrict employees
will get $1.1 million in raises.
This will bring salaries for classi-
fied employees -which do not
include teachers and administrators
-up to par with the other school
districts in Orange County.
Last year, the Newport-Mesa
Unified School District agreed to
conduct a study of the job titles,
responsibilities and salaries of all
classified employees in the cllstrict.
It is a process that is supposed to be
conducted every three to five years,
but hasn't been done in the New-
port-Mesa clistrict in more than 20
yea.rs, said Lori McCune, the clis-
trict's assistant superintendent of
human resources.
"A number of the salaries were
way out of whack," said McCune,
who negotiates for the clistrict.
The clistrict hired Ewing & CoA, a
human resource consulting firm, to
review every classified employee
position and then adjust job titles,
responsibilities and salaries where
they were needed.
•w e cleaned up a lot of job
descriptions, because things
change,• said Cindy Means, presi-
dent of the Newport-Mesa chapter of
the California Classified Employee
Assn. "Some of the job desaiptions
referred to a ditto machine -some-
thing we don't even use anymore."
Only 126 of the 900 classified
employees <lid not get a raise,
McCune said. The district's consul-
tants determined that the workers
who did not get a pay increase were
earning competitive salaries.
Of the $1.1 million in salary
increases, 2% of that, or $350,000,
will go toward back pay for employ-
ees for April, May and June. The
remaining $700,000 will provide
employees with raises for the
upcoming year, McCune said.
Whe n talks began last year,
McCune said, clistrict officials knew
they could not afford to bring all the
salaries up to the average at one
time. But that changed this spring,
when 'Gov. Gray Davis announced
his plan to give school districts the
money owed to them by the state.
So now Newport-Mesa's classi-
fied employees will get their raises,
although the amounts will vary.
"The board made a commitment
to do the study and when it came
down to it, they honored their com-
rriitment to classified e mployees,#
Means said. "So we're all very hap-
py -some are just happier than
others.•

Nicole Brown's sister 10ctures on family violence

COSTA MESA -Tunya
Brown lived through the trau-
ma of the murder of her sister,
Nicole. But seeing the agony
her parents went through is
something she hopes no one
experiences.
"H only someone had spo-

Bro1wn, along with her sis-

MOURNING GLORY
NEWPORT BEACH -
Even with two CJF team titles,
two section runners-up and a
third-place section finisher,
six Sea View League titles
and abundant individual
accolades, lhe 1999-00 boys
athletic year at Newport Har-
bor High will always be
remembered for one tragic
loss.
The death of senior football
star Andre Stewart, in a May
14 car accident, cast a shadow
of grief which put sporting tri-
umphs in their proper per-
spective.
But as students, athletes
and those in the community
cling to memories of the CIF
Southern Section Division Vl
Offensive Player of the Year
and Newport-Mesa District
MVP. they may also reflect on
moments of glory.
The Stewart-led football
team went 13-0-1 and won
the CIF Division VI crown.
Water polo, a CIF Division 1
semifinalist, and cross coun-
try. eighth at CIF Division Il
finals, completed the Tars'
fall-sport league title sweep .
Volleyball, track and field
and golf also won league, and
golf was the CIF (South Coast
Regio11) champion.
Volleyball and track were
both C IF runners-up, while
swimming, paced by likely
Olympian Aaron Peirsol, was
third in CIF.
B'illy Clayton, All-ClF in
football and volleyball, was
Sea View Athlete of the Year,
while Trevor Jones was the
state 300-meter hurdles
champ. Dustin Illingworth
(basketball), Pete r Belden and
Tun Birdsong (water polo),
Nick Langsdorf (baseball) and
Kevin Olson (golf) were
league or district MVPs.
