NEWPORT BEACH -Four thieves snatched
jewels valued at a quarter-million dollars f~om a
parked car Wednesday and sped away before police
could catch them.
Florida-based jewelry dealers Samuel Keeble
and Deborah Brown were making a sales call in
Newport Beach at about 5 p.m. wnen the four sus-
pects broke a window m their rented black 2000
Honda Accord, opened the trunk and took several
cases containing pearls and diamond rings and
necklaces, police said. The suspects drove away in a
newer, white Chevrolet Malibu, witnesses told offi-
cers.
Keeble and Brown are sales representatives for
Asba & Dangler Designs Inc.
It took the thieves no more than 30 seconds to
grab the loot before screeching from the parking lot
at 3433 Via Lido, police ~d.
Authorities are looking for four suspects, who are
described as well-groomed men in their 30s.
The thieves, like many others in Southern Cali-
fornia in recent years, probably followed the sales-
people from a shop and waited for an opportune
moment to break into the car, Newport Beach Police
Sgt. Mike McDermott.

Columbus. The star of the show
was a 200..foot high rotating
wheel with enclosed benches
dangling from it -the brainchild
of a man named Geo~e Ferris.
And in Ca.lif omia. in a rural
county south of Los Angeles, the
first Orange County Fair was
underway.
One hundred seven years lat·
er, it's still going strong.
What was that first Orange
County Fair like? It's hard to
imagine. It was a different time
and a different world in Orange
County in 1893.
1bere were no toll roads. Dots
were still called periods. Impact
was still a noun. People wore
those goofy outfits at the beach.
There were only three channels
on cable. One of them was the
farm report.
Speaking of farms, that's how
the whole fair thing got started.
Fair comes from the Latin, leriae,
which means "to park really far
away.• No it doesn't. I made that
up. Feriae means "feast"
Originally, a fair meant a
"market day,• when farmers and
purveyors of whatever people
purveyed in those days got
together to sell their stuff. In this
country, there have been refer-
ences to •going to the fair" since
1638. What was Orange County

that already.
You didn't laugh then. either.
By 1800, a fair meant a period-

much the same meaning as
today. The first annual fair in the
U.S. was the Berkshire CaWe
Show, which began in Pittsfield.
Mass .. in 1810. People came from
all over. They looked at the cows.
The cows looked at them. It was
a simpler time.
By the 1840s, there were fair-
grounds, state fairs and county
fairs all over the place. The first
state fair was held in Syracuse,
N.Y., in 1841. It didn't take long
for fairs to take a quantum leap
forward and become World's
Fairs and Expositions. The first
was the 1853 New York World's
Fair, held in what is now Bryant's
Park, next to the main library on
5th Avenue and 42nd.
It cost $640,000. It's bard for us
to appreciate what a staggering
sum that was at the time. To put
it in context, you could get some-
thing nice on Newport Coast in
1853 for $35,000 -with a view.

CORONA DEL MAR -Instead of spending
the summer months frolicking in the sun, as
many soon-to-be seniors are doing, Sohana
Ahmad and her friends are fighting poverty and
hunger.
The 16-year-old Corona del Mar High School
student is the incoming president of the school's
Youth Against Hunger Club.
On Satmday, the group has planned a tennis
tournament to raise money to ship food items and
supplies to 1bird World countries.
·we wanted to help people,· she said. "Last
year, (the club) didn't do too much -not like
the year before."
So this year, Sohana decided to get a JUll\l>-
start on making a difference.
The to\Jfllament will be held from 10 a .m.
until 2 p.m. at the Corona del Mar High School
tennis courts. So far, 26 players have signed up
at $10 apiece. While it costs nothing to attend
and cheer on the players, there will be raifles
with gift certificates and cash prizes.
Raffle tickets will be $2 each. Spectators
could win gift certificates to the Cheese Cake
Factory, Tony Romas. Hobie Sports and many
other local businesses that have helped sponsor
the event.
Once the students have raised funds to ship
items, they will then go out to the commuruty to
collect food, blankets, medical supplies and
many other items, she said.
To make the project more economical for the
club, they will send the supplies to the Latter-
day Saints Humanitarian Certter in Utah, which
will include the club's donations in a shipment
they are making.

Pigged out
Second litter of little porkers
brings fair births to 22
all in about a day's time.
Alex Coolman
DAILY PILOT
FAIRGROUNDS -There must be
something in the air at the Orange
County Fair.
Only a day after 11 piglets were bom
to one of the Centennial Farm porkers,
another sow gave birth to an identical
number -22 pigs m about 24 bows .
Technically speaking, the births
were spaced a little further apart than
that, however.
The first batch came about 5:30 p.m .
Tuesday, and the second began to
arrive at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. It was-
n't untiJ"'3 a.m. Thursday that the last of
the litter was finally brought into the
world.

Sophia Wardo, 10, of Garden Grove gets elevated on ~e Trampoline Thing at the
Orange County Fair ln Costa Mesa.
Lying exhausted m her pen Thurs-
day, the unnamed mother sow was the
object of a great deal of attention.
Not only were fair visitors. eager to
get a glimpse of her brood, but the
piglets themselves were jockeying for
position to suckJe her breasts. Fourth Place

Moore added that in his
11 years of overseeing the
Pun Zone, not much has
changed. More than a mil-
lion people visit the Fun
Zone each year. Children
continue to delight at the
ca.mival-like games, candy
and Ferris wheel, just as
they did more than six
decades ago.
Fun Zone history actually
began in 1936 w hen Fred
Lewis, who had owned the
waterfront property and
operated a boatyard for
three decades, leased the
land to Al Anderson.
Anderson tore down the
failing boatyard and began
construction of the original
Fun Zone. Several families,
including Anderson, operat-
ed a merry-go-round, Ferris
wheel, bumper cars, boats
and the arcade area. Ander-
son even had secret poker
games in his upstairs apart-
ment on the premises.
The Fun Zone took off
and became a significant
tourist attraction in the sea-
side community. Shortly
after the end of World War
II, in 1948, Anders<w
bought the property from
Lewis.
He owried the Fun Zone

DAILY PILOT
Anew shop at the Balboa
Fun Zone allows cus-
tomers to choose their
own ice cteam recipes.
Since opening in late April.
Cold Stone C reamery has
offered visitors a multitude of
flavors and toppings -and
employees who sing when
they're given a tip.
Manager Margaret Adams
said customers welcome the
challenge of selecting their
own sundae recipe.
"It's a unique thing and
that's why they want to try
it,• Adams said. As the summer
lengthens, so do the lines at the
Creamery, but Adams said peo-
ple enjoy the incomparable
experience and often return on
a regular basis.
"Hundreds of flavors, thou-
sands of combinations• reads
the Cold Stone logo. The easy
decision is choosing an ice
cream or yogurt flavor from the
roughly 20 on-site, freshly
made options. •
Once the first decision is
made, the challenge escalates.
The "cold stone,• a frozen gran-
ite surface, sets the backdrop
for the heaps of toppings that sit
in giant tubs. Fresh apple, cher-
ry and peach pie filling, a liber-
al selection of candy ai:id scores
of sweet, oozing toppings.
including old-fashioned
caramel, butterscotch and both
hot and cold fudge, take the
ordering process to a new level.
lf the customer is over-
whelmed by the options, Cold
Stone employees are there to
help. Scoopers ask each cus-
tomer if they need an introduc-
tion to the process, and then
help each one accordingly.
Less adventurous customers
can find proven reope combi-
nations posted throughout the
store. Madeline's Mudd Pie and
Don's Delight are in high
demand, Adams said
After the customer fioalires
their "mix-ins, "the Cold Stone
team member takes it from
there. Every morning, "we fire
up the stone,• Adams said. ~Irs
about an hour-and-a-half
process to frost it up.•
· Here, on the funen surface,
the ingredients are mixed. fold-
ed and blended before the final
product is eased into an enor-
mous plam or chocolate-dipped
waffle cone.
Cold Stone's upbeat lighting
sets the stage for the employ-
ees' second task -singing.
"lf you fllng one, we'll sing
one." reads the bp jar. And yes,
the Cold Stone employees
keep that promise. Jmgles fill
the arr the moment customers
show theu financial gratitude.
Newport Beach cousins
Chelsea Giger and Blake Gard--
ner, both 9, took a break from
their summer day to enjoy a
Cold Stone mixture. When
asked why they chose. the
Creamery over other BAlboa
treats, such as the Balboa Bar,
they said 1t was "because it's
really yummy and good.'
Blake said be bad visited a
Cold Stone Creamery in Ari-
zona and had been waiting to
VlSit her hometown store ~
discovering it had opened.
Although the shop is a fran-
chised operation, originating in
Arizona, it is quickly finding its
way into Orange County. There
are locations on the Balboa
Peninsula, Huntington Beach
and lrvtne.
Dana Rodgers, owner of the
Fun Zone Location. will open
her second store in Dana Point.
Hunbngton Beach Cream-
ery owner Jeanne Holdren said
she and her husband. Jerry,
plan to open their next store in
the Costa Mesa Courtyards lat-
er this summer.

NHBA Bronco takes its chances at Sectionals
•Newport Beach team
opens today at Moreno
Valley against Riverside.
Joseph Boo
OAllY PILOT
MORENO VALLEY -The New-
port Harbor Baseball Assoc1abon
Bronco (11-12) All-Star Baseball
team has gone farther than any
team in league history, literally and
figuratively.
Not only is this year's NHBA
squad the first team to advance to
the PONY League Sectionals in
league history, it gets to travel all the
way to Moreno Valley in Riverside
County for its next series. Newj>ort's
first game is today, 5:15 p.m., at Sun-
nymead Park again.st Riverside's
No. 2 team.
But unlike the Orange County
Regionals, where NeV(J>Ort got out
as the No. 3 team, only one team
advances to the Zone Regionals at
Whittier. Teams from other Western
states show up at next week's Zone
for the chance at the National
Championships at Irving, Texas.
·Our guys are a little excited to
play,• Heenan said. "It's a new area
and a lot of our kids haven't been
this far. I don't think they're ner-
vous, though.•
Although this is Newport's first
trip to the Sectionals, its odds of
PONY llSEIAU
advancing to the Zone are good.
Newport was the only team to come
anywhere close to beating ~werful
Fountain Valley, coming within two
outs of a win in the' semifinals.
Before that, Newport won every
game comfortably in district and
regional play. • u we keep getting solid pitching
and defense,• Heenan said, •we
can compete with any team. I just
hope we keep it going.• In a sign of bow long Newport
bas played, two !layers, starter
Dustin Schuler an Brendan Salis-
bury, left the team after the Region-
als because of prior commibnents.
•I
~ Newport is down to 10 players, but
most of its core remains.
Dennis Heenan is coming off a
six-inning one-bitter in a 12-1 victo-
ry over Anaheim that clinched New-
port's spot in the Sectionals. On the
mound, he is 7-0 with a 1.26 ERA in
All-Star play. He also leads the team
in batting with a .536 average.
Newport's leadoff bitter, Kurt
Yacko, bas been the catalyst for an
offense that scored over five runs in
all but one game. He is currently
battin?. .407, and he has a 2.40 ERA
as a pitcher to boot.
Catcher Billy Munce is tied for
the team high with four home runs
with right fielder Nick Frazier. Sec-
ond baseman Donnie Hunt bas
~n torrid ever since he joined the
All-Star team. He carries a .464 bat-
ting average .
Newport's cleanup hitter, Alec
Martinez, the team leader in RBis, is
solid in left field. Davis Pemstein is 6
for 12 at the plate and he is one of
Newport's top pitchers. He has the
team's second-lowest ERA with a
2.21.
First baseman Blake Fogg ~
been a defensive wall, collecting
errant throws deftly. He also has a
.359 on-base percentage. Utility
player Tun Cramer had a key hit in
the Anaheim game, and Kevin
Gowdy is a versat.Jle fielder and
team leader for Newport.

standout shoots 4-under 68 and
is tied for fourth at St. Andrews.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -Three
months after leading the first round in
goll's first major championship of 2000,
Dennis Paulson of Santa Ana Country
Club and formerly of Costa Mesa High
shot lights-out golf once again in the open-
ing round Thursday of the British Open on
the Old Course.
Paulson, a former national long-drive
champion whose.game is perfectly suited
for St. Andrews' tustoric links, shot 4-
under-par 68 and is tied with others for
fourth place, trailing leader Ernie Els, who
managed to upstage Tiger Woods (Big
Canyon Country Club) in the hrst round of
the British Open with a 6-under 66.
Woods and Steve Flesch are tied for sec-
ond place at 5-under 67 and were in the
clubhouse when Els passed them in the
aftemoon.
Paulson, who continues to enjoy his
finest year on the PGA Tour, won the Buick
Classic earlier this year at Harrison, N.Y.,
in a playoff, and led after the first round at
the Masters.
Six players, including Paulson and Tom
Lehman, were two shots back on a day
when the winds were llght and the sconng
conditions perfect.
