Welding power
GENERATING SPARKS
Steven McManus spends hours as
the man behind the mask -a
welder's mask. The 44-year-old has
welded since high school.
He has had his own shop, Apollo
Diesel, in Costa Mesa since 1982. It
is there th.at he builds custom diesel
generators. McManus orders indus-
trial moton from Japan and builds
around them.
He hims those inotors into gener-
ators, dive compressors or water
makers, which turns saltwater into
freshwater.
•rm a fabricator,• he said with a
laugh. •A big fabricator."
Around that motor, be builds
engine parts, a heat exchange, a
mixing muffler and a frame from
scratch.
It takes about a week to make a
generator from beginning to end, he
said, and about 20 hours of that is
welding.
Steel a weld
done worker
A BURNING DESIRE
·1 get hot and dirty,• McManus said.
In the summer months, he waits
until the evening, when the weather
cools, to do much of his welding. But
the time of day, the goggles and the
mask don't keep him from getting
burned.
•You bwn yourself constantly,"
he said. ·1 bwn mysell every night
and most every day. You just acci-
dentally touch something, but you
get used to it.•
A POWERFUL IDEA
There is no illusion that McManus
has a glamorous job, but it is what
he's always wanted to do.
After graduating from Sonora
High School in La Habra, McManus
joined the Army as a medic mechan-
ic, he said.
•we lived on generators,• be said.
•we lived in tents and had all gas
generators. It was dangerous, and
we had to have gas trucks come in,
and you have to haul these big gas
cans around. So, I thought about
what the government needed."
WJni NERVES OF STEEL
Since be designed the Apollo Diesel
Generator many years ago, the plan is
all in bis head. So, he simply goes to
work when the motors cmne in.
Most of the parts he builds are
made of steel, and he does what is
called •tungsten inert gas• welding.
Tungsten is what the welding
materlal is made out of, and it ts
stronger than steel, he said.
"I come in, and I start getting met-
al cut so I can start welding,• he
said. "That takes about two days.•
It takes about three days to put
the whole unit together before be
can run tests on it and ship it out -
to the tune of more than $7,000.

The California Fireworks Safety

interesting media kit to promote its
message. Most fascinating is the pro-
gram's mascot -the Preventor.
A comic book hero -complete
with a helmet sporting goggles and
an oxygen mask of some sort -the
Preventor boasts an insignia on bis
chest with a picture of fire with a line
drawn across it.
What's more is they throw in a lit-
tle comic book with the Preventor's
story. Turns out Forrest -that's his
alter ego -was left at an orphan-
age after his firefighter father fell in
the line of duty. Later, that orphan-
age catches fire and Forrest -not
stupid as stupid does -saves
everyone, but becomes badly
burned in the process. About 10
years later, he learns bis purpose
and throws on the aazy wannabe
space suit.
So, what it comes down to is that
Smokey the Bear is just too darn
busy with forest fires that the state
has to employ the Preventor. Moral
of the story: fireworks cause fires; be
careful. Happy Fourth.

A generation on, maybe it's time for a new type of patriotism
~ EDITOR'S NOTE: The following
1s an encore column that Joseph N.
Bell wrote two yeall ago.
I f you want to be shaken
up a bit, ask the young
people in your view why
we celebrate the Fourth of
July. lf half of them know -
not in vague generalities, but
very specifically what hap-
pe~ed on that day -then
you have quite a remarkable
awareness of American his-
tory in your neighborhood.
And if one-tenth of them
care, you might even have
some of the vestiges of a
badly out-of-date emotion
we used to call patriotism.
That wasn't a problem
when I was growing up. I
had an uncle named French
Quinn who was a lawyer and
general mover and shaker in
the county-seat town of
Decatur, Ind. I always think
of him come the Fourth of
July because I still remember
vividly many childhood years
of going to the local park on
that holiday and listening to

clearly more emotional than

My uncle spoke from a

There were flags draped
around the podium, and the
high school band set the tone
of the day with rousing patri-

County funding will also
help pay for a new marine

the project. Newport Beach has
pledged to match that amount.
Later this year, the county

was n6t a frivolous matter,
and July 4 -which also

Then it was home to shoot
off my private store of fire-

whose family always shared
the holiday with mine.
On one memorable
Fourth, I had a firework -·a
triple rocket -I had been
saving for last, and I set it up
carefully in the middle of the
yard. As J bent over lo light it
-the high point of my day
-Eddie ran up, said "I want
to do it," and pushed me
aside. I was outraged, and in
the scuffle that followed, the
triple rocket was both ignited
and turned over on its side.
Eddie and I ran, and
Eddie fell over a hedge. He
lay helplessly, thrashing his
legs on top of the hedge
while the triple rocket
grazed him three times in
the seat of his pants. I
regarded this incident as a
building until the permanent
water lab can be built in 2003.
The county's money will pay
for the building, computers and
lab equipment. The county has
also hired a full-time microbi-
ologist and research assistant.
Their salaries are separate from
the county's pool of money.
The county's budget covers
the financial year from July 1 to
June 30, 2002. Last year's bud-
get came in at $4.51 billion.

combined sign from God and
the forefathers of our country
demonstrating to all of us in
highly dramatic fashion that
justice -a cornerstone of
the nation founded on this
day -will indeed, somehow,
eventually prevail.
Now fireworks are some-
thing we watch on Indepen-
dence Day from a distant
hillside, set off by unseen
hands under sb'ict supervi-
sion. And patriotism -a cel-
ebration of country -is also
something we view at a dis-
tance, if at all.
When I suggest this rather
hesitantly to members of
more recent generations of
Americans, many of them
say -with considerabl~ jus-
tification -that there is far
too much going on these
days that discourages both
trust and respect among
Americans toward their
country and its leaders.
As a result, we have
become very suspicious
as & society of anything
that smacks of institutional-
ized emotion.
Par too many Americans
have become convi.rlced that
patriotism requires looking at
one's country with glasses so
thickly rose-coated that the
wearer can no longer see the
enormous inequities and
injustices in our society.
Quite the opposite is true.
One of the basic freedoms
we've always enjoyed is the
freedom to dissent from one
another and from the deci-
sio~s of our govemmenL
Done legally and responsi-
bly, by respecting the rights
of those who disagree with
us, such dissent can be the
highest form of patriotism.
The cynics who feed off
the short view of current
events and leaders in this
country might usefully con-
sider the long view on this
Fourth of July: Slowly and
often painfully, the precepts
that motivated the men who
signed the Declaration of
Independence are standing
the test of a world and a
nation. whose complexities
could not have even been
imagined in 1776.
Patriotism can't be force
fed, nor can such symbols as
playing the "Star-Spangled
Banner" before public events
or repeating the Pledge of
Allegiance by rote substitute
for it. Patriotism has to be
felt. Perhaps the kind of siin-
ple, unsophisticated warmth
a lot of us, like my Uncle
French, used to feel when
we celebrated the Fourth
will never be possible. again.
Maybe now we need to find
a new kind of patriotism that
can regain the warmth and
the long View, while at the
same time accepting intellec-
tually the inequities and
complexities as we work to
right them.
As for me, someday I
would like to have one more
triple rocket in my yard -
pointed. this time, to the sky.

"So this brings us a great big
step closer,• Means said. "It
wasn't the 10% a lot of districts

the district in good fiscal shape.•
The union conducted a small

School board members said
it was their hope and intention
to see employees get a raise all

ning lh;at classified employees

and administrators-have gone
head to head with the district,
demanding to be brought up to
par with the other school dis-
tricts in Orange County.
After more than eight months
of negotiating last summer,
nearly 800 school district
employees received $1.1 mil-
lion in raises after an extensive
study showed Newport-Mesa
employees were not in line with
other districts.
It is a process that is sup-
posed to be conducted every
three to five years, but it hadn't
been done in the district in more
than 20 years.
It was then that the district
promised to keep salaries com-
petitive, and thars what employ·
ees wanted, Means said.
When the new agreement is
signed, employees can expect to
see a 6% increase in their pay-
checks as of July 1. Because the
agreement is retroactive to last
July, they can also expect to see
some extra money in the mail in
the fall. ·

While that may be the case,
Teffeteller pleaded with plan-

He didn't succeed, and com-

Buzz officials had changed the

But every up has its

also means the repeated

So they barbecue. They
spend hours on the beach.
They point the stereo

If Cook wants to block views, that's his right
R egarding Lodwrick Cook's lack of being able to
block his view with bis own yacht in front of his

homes. He can either look at his view or block it Wlth hls

The Supreme Court has held up

COMMUNITY
COMMENTARY I very seldom get involved in ovtc
issues, but this is an issue that goes
back to the nghts of people.
The only nghl someone has when they buy a house is to
look straight up at the sky when they're on their own roof.
Nobody has ever guaranteed people's views. To start
this would be absolutely the worst thing that could hap-
pen and will end up in major lawsuits. If people can't fig-
ure that out, then something's wrong.
It's a big issue. I own waterfront property. If I want to
block my own view in front of my own waterfront prop-
erty, that's the way it is. That's why I paid millions of dol-
lars for it.

A _wise and tasty choice for Greek cuisine

A thena In Greek
mythology is the
goddess of wisdom,
skills and warfare. 1 don't
know about the warfare
part, but Athena's in Costa
Mesa is definitely a wise
place to go if you want fla-
vorful Greek food.
Owner Avo Killcarslan
moved his restawant from
Laguna Hills to its current
location on Anton Boule-
vard two months ago. He
said he fell in love with the
location, and It's easy to see
why.
From the front. Athena's
looks like the typical South-
etn California box, just a
street away frotn South
Coast Repertory and the
Orange County Performing
Arts Center. But when you
walk inside, you are treated
to a spacious cavern that
opens up to a park-like set-
ting. Athena's shares the
courtyard, with its lake-like
fountain and greenery. with
the Marriott and Wyndam
Gardens hotels.
It's a pleasant place to sit
and relax while taking a
siesta from the working
world. But the real reason to
visit Athena's is the food.
The menu is varied, with
Mediterranean treats from
falafel to shrimp lemono
and lots of yummy desserts.
We started with the
saganaki ($6.99). cheese
flamed at the table with
brandy. The colorful fire is
put out with lemon juice,
and the cheese is then
served with the restaurant's
homemade pita bread. The
sfrlps were crisp and tangy

U you've never had Turk-

sugary enough to make me
wonder how many teeth I

The dessert menu at

The yummies available run

I had the baklava ($3.99),

pretty director of .extras, Ali-

This litUe triangle doesn't
quite approach the one in
"Pearl Harbor,• but it does
generate quite a few laughs,
especially as Miyashiro finds
himself with the ·No. 4"
players (the lowest rung of
the extras' ladder) while
Kopp worms his way into
management and into Hart-
son's favor.
Hartson is particularly
dppealing as the assistant
director, and Kopp and
Miyashiro handle the funny
stuff splendidly. But the
biggest slice of ham at this
bufCet is Sean F. Gray as the
godlike director (a thinly dis-
guised sendup of Cecil B.

blue movies on his projecior.
It's a pity his character isn't
more involved in the action.
Other student actors mak-

There's also a lively com-

I think the use of nitrous
oxide is boring on a straight
race course. The idea of a
tricked out Jetta is ridiculous.
As such. the speed in the
movie was not a thrill, and the
cars are a bit silly at times.
I knew too much about

Needless to say, not

Lily's sister, Elna; Aidan
Quinn as Tom Bledsoe, an
embittered man who has
retreated back to the moun-

It would have been easy
to tell this story at the

A significant moment in club
history occurred in April 1923,
when it was announced that
Orange County Country Qub
would move from the Castaways
to a new location, for irrigation
purposes, in Santa Ana Heights
at Newport Boulevard.
It was the •Roaring '20s" in
America and golf in California
came right along, with golf
courses converting to grass
fairways and greens. Before,
gteens were oiled sand and
fairways were hard dirt.
For membeni at Orange
County Country Oub, the county's
first golf club, their spectacular
site on the bluffs on the Upper
Newport Bay's west side lacked
viable water supply for an
inigation system, so a search
began for a new site that would
have water for the twf area~.
It was also announced that
the club, which paid $71,000 for
its current property in 1923,
would reorganize and be called
Santa Ana Country Club.
Today, it is still one of the few
golf-only private clubs in
Southern California and the
oldest, by far, in Orange County.

Brooke Borlsoff of Agoura Hills today
at noon. Borisoff won, 6-0, 6-1, over
Yucaipa's Michelle Beyronneau.
On the other hand, Reitz played in
one of the more exciting matches of
the day. She used an all-around game,
including aggressive attacks to the
net and pinpoint service returns, to
score the first-set victory and earn
the 4-0 lead in the second.
Yet, Gates seemed to wake up in
the second set. She grabbed momen-
tum with each winner as she slapped
her leg as if riding a horse and whis-

Gates won the second set and her
hopes strengthened as Reitz went
down with an injury. Reitz re-injured
her left leg -she suffered a tom knee
ligament in last year's sectionals -
saying she thought she had hyper-
extended it when chasing a lob shot.
But, after an eight-minute break,
Reitz regained focus and took control
in the third set. With misdirection
shots, Reitz took advantage of Gates'
hustle and approaches to the net.
Said Reitz: ·1 really couldn't have

Coach Andy Stewart looked
on, Yelsey controlled the match
from start to finish.
"It's always different for the
first match because you really
don't want to lose,• said Yelsey,
who is seeded No. 7. "I was a
Uttle bit nervous about that.
But, I thought I played well
and I think I'm just going to
keep playing better in this tour-
nament. ff
Said Stewart: "I know all
the girls here are in shape, but
Anne is probably in better
shape than anyone here. In her
first match, she didn't play her
best tennis, but she did enough
to win."
