COSTA MESA -The Planning
Commission voted Monday to allow one
dirt trail at Fairview Park, but to leave
open the possibility of paving other trails in
the future. nm Cromwell, whose home sits adja-

blueprints.

surfaced trails.
Cromwell said he wouldn't oppose one
asphalt path, intended for high-speed
cyclists, that would connect the park to a
larger network of bike lanes.
David Alkema, the dty's project manager
for the Fairview Park redesign, alSQ said he
is satisfied with the commission's deagon.
But he said he would prefer concrete over
asphalt, which requires more maintenance.
The city's plans call. for converting the
park from a grassy field scored with di.rt
trails into a nature preserve of nabve foliage.
If the final plan includes certain paved
trails, the county will contribute $500,000
to work at Fairview Park.
· The new park would eliminate many
of the makeshift hillside trails used by
mountain bikers. hikers and cross-coun-
try runners.

irreparable damage to our course,• said
Estancia High School cross-country coach
Charles Appell.
Cross-country teams from Estanaa and
Orange Coast College use Fairview Park
as their home course.
More than a dozen other residents
asked the commission to recommend leav-
ing the park as it is.
The City Council is scheduled to dis-
cuss the Fairview Park plan Ul nud-August.

Before the meeting, Councilman
Tod Ridgeway explained that the city
constantly struggles with finding a bal-
ance between maintaining public
access and minimizing the impact on
beachfront property owners. Some
1ocol residents have complained that
participants are noisy, careless and use
their backyanis for water or as toilets. •we have about seven miles of
ocean front and Huntington has 10 to
11 miles, and they don't have residen-
tial adjacent,• Ridgeway said.
He added that the city is left to
clean up the trash and control the
crowds if they get out of hand.
However, according to Newport
Beach Police Sgt. Mike McDermott
and Dave Niederhaus, the city's gener-
al service director, the competitions are
not a problem -yet.
•Nothing bas gotten out of hand
like in Huntington Beach,· McDermott
said. •Calls are about illegally parked
carsJ not alcohol.•
While Niederhaus agreed that the
city is caught in a balancing act
between the public and residents,
suifers are usually very respectful of
the beaches. Event sponsors pay the
city and often volunteer to clean up, he
said. .

more people to come to my area of the

isn't a big problem. But next year we
could have 15 to 20 sponsors apply for
competitions."
Scott Moreland, a surf coach for

city surfing instructor for 30 years, said

"I just played with Chris Veitch,
and we won low gross for the
tournament (the Balboa Invitational
at Big Canyon Country Club in
June)," Collins said, referring to the
familiarity most of the area's top
amateurs have for each other.
When Collins won his final club
championship of the 1980s, Manos
was working for a collection
agency. It wasn't until 1990 when
Manqs got his first break in the golf
business and was hired as an
apprentice at Yorba Linda Country

head pro for almost 18 years before
coming to Mesa Verde in the

sport he loves in the triathlon, and
it's taking him to new heights.
Joseph Boo
DAILY PILOT
N ever underestimate the power of a
shirt. Mark Pomerantz' introduction
to triathlon came on the back of Dr.
Bob Cuyler's racing jersey in 1998. 0n· a
boy scout bicycle bip to San Diego,
Pomerantz couldn't help notice the word,
*biathlon* on Cuyler's back
*l asked him what a triathlon was,•
Pomerantz said. "He said that I should try
it, and l would be pretty good.•
After playing a variety of sports and
running competitively since seventh grade,
Pomerantz found an activity he could
passionately compete in when he saw that
jersey.
TWo years later, Pomerantz can
accurately be described as pretty good. The
16-year-old Newport Beach resident and
Corona del Mar High junior has won his
first five meets this year and placed second
in the Pacific Coast 1\iathlon Sunday.
Triathlon is not a sport that is easy to
pick up quickly. It's a grueling event
combuting swimming, bicycling and
running into one long race.

been a member at Big Canyon for
20 years.
Poll.owing Danny Bibb's reign at
Big Canyon with six men's dub
titles and four in a row, Collins
won four of the next five club
championships, beginning in 1985.
He won three straight from 1987 to
1989, then passed the Big Canyon
torch to Alan Drobka, who
dominated the 1990s with six titles.
But, after 10 years, Collins
returned to the winners' circle in
'99 and was selected by Manos to
represent Big Canyon in the first
Jones Cup, a spinoff from the Tea
Cup Classic.
Like the Tea Cup Classic, the

"You're going to force me out of retirement,•
Manos said of the Daily Pilot-created event, billed
as the ultimate community pro-am with the four
private clubs in this newspaper's circulation vying
for honors.
Marios, who won the 1996 Southern California
PGA sectional championship, got his start in the Kelly Manos
business in 1990, when then-Yorba Linda Country
Club head pro Tom Sargent hired him away from a collection agency.
Manos worked his way up to first assistant pro under Salyent,
then in February 1995 was hired at Big Canyon as h~ad pro Bob
Lovejoy's first assistant
A former USC golfer, Manos qualified for three PGA Tour events
in 1997 because of his SCPGA sectional title. In '97, Manos played at
the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines
and the Nissan Open at Riviera, where Manos made the cut and
played with Duffy Waldorf in the final round.
Manos grew up playing golf with Tiger Woods at the Heartwell
Golf Course in Long Beach. In one junior tournament, Manos was 16
and an ail-league high ~ool player when he lost to Woods, then a
5-year-old, by one stroke.

Manos in the Jones Cup as Mesa Verde Country Club's head pro.
When Manos became head pro last year at Big Canyon, Lovejoy
was promoted to Director of Golf. w-by Richard Dunn
Cuyler was also the director of the
Pacific Coast niathlon, which was
Pomerantz' first competition in 1998.
lhathlon is a tough sport. but Pomerantz
completed it. Ever since then Pomerantz
found a new love.
Corona del Mar Hlgh's Mark Pomerantz ls all geared up for a long, run with the triathlon.
• 1t was not hard at all,• be said.
•1nstead, it was really, really fun."
He completed eight triathlons in 1999
with good times, but Pomerantz really
made a name for himself this year. He won
five of his six competitions including the
Bonelli Park series, which combines three
separate triathlons into one event. His
second-place finish came against some of
the nation's top triathles in his age group.
He was successful enough to be noticed
by other trlathletes. Not just Pomerantz'
fellow competitors in the 15-19 age group,
but professionals and a former national
~pion.
He become acquainted with not onfy
with family Jrtend Emilio DeSoto, but also
with female triathietes Michellie Jones and
Wendy Ingram. Pomerantz' biggest thrill
though, came fTom recently-retired .
three-time national champion Mike Pigg.
Although be wasn't asked, Pigg sent a
bicycling helmet to Pomerantz, •a $500
one,• he said.
"I liked it so much,• Pomerantz said. *To
me, it's the equivalent of getting baseball
stuff from Hank Aaron.•
Not only did Pomerantz immerse himself
on the course, he dove into the subject
matter outside the races by finding out a lot
of fectoids about the sport.
He can quickly explain the biathlon's
history, the politics between triathlon d.rcles
and the Olympic committee and the names
of inany triathletes.
•After I got into triathlon, J had to find
TRIATHLON
out as much as I can." he said.·
It is a rugged determination Pomerantz
brings to the sport that bas him heading
toward a professional career.
•My parents have been really
supportive,• be said. •Tuey know I want to
be a professional. Other parents might
think that's w~d. but they're totally behind
me.•
His main focus is on the triathlons, but
Pomerantz juggles that with CdM's boys
cross country team. He was an integral
runner with the Sea Kings, who placed 12th
at the CIF State Division IV finals.
While Pomerantz plans to run with CdM
ill his senior season, be will take time off at
the start ol the l8UOO to go to the Nationals.
Pomerantz' training ~t ii also
different from the other runners. He
designed his own training routine, and
CdM Coach Bill Sumner bas allowed him
to alter his practice from the other runners.
Po~erantz' ambition goes pretty high.
•1 want to become a proficient
professional,• he said.
His goal is not only to be a professional,
it's to win the vaunted Trorunan competition.
That was the goal that popped up in
Pomerantz' head during his first triathlon.
·1 always set high goals for myself,"
Pomerantz said.
For now, his i.mriiediate future ls the ·
National Cbempionablp in Millouri on
Sept. 9. Pomerantz wants to win every one
of his rct.ces until the nationa.ls, where a
top-five lin1sb guarantees a tJ:ip to the

inception of the Jone!> Cup,
has no doubt sparked some
additional interest in club

Last fall, heading down
the 18th fairway with only a
one-stroke lead, Collins
drained a python putt and
ended up winning by two
shots over Ron Maggard and
Gary Singer.
Collins finished at 306,
followed by Maggard and
Singer at 308 and Bibb at
310.
But Collins wqsn't always
on the links. "I've quit

through the years, but I've
been playmg since I've been
at Big Canyon,~ said Collins,
who played one year·at
Stanford, where he was an
economics and political

Collins, who grew up
across the street from South
Hills Country Club in West
DEEP SEA
Covina and started swinging
the sticks at age 11, has
competed in the U.S.
Amateur and California State
Amateur.
During his chjunpionship
streak in the late '80s at Big
Canyon, Collins once shot an
.Qpening-round 66 in the club
championship to tie a course
record. The mark bas since
been shattered by Big
Canyon member Tiger
Woods, who, playing for
Stanford, shot 61 in the first
round of the men's 1996
Pacific 10 Conference
championships, four months
before Woods turned pro.
Collins went on to capture
the Big Canyon title that
