CRYSTAL COVE -A group of
local preservationists have sued the
state to keep the residents of Crys-
tal Cove State Park from being
evicted from their cottages.
State Pam offidall have set
Sunday at 5 p.m. as the final dead-
line for· residents of the 46 historlc:
cottages to vacate the publicly
owned land. If completed, it would
be the culmination of more than 20
· ye~ of effort by California State
Parks to remove the residents.
The Crystal Cove Community
1h1st filed the suit Tuesday after-
noon. It ·accuses the state of illegal-
ly removing the residents without
adequately analyzing the decision's
effect on the environment.
Bruce Hostetter, the executive
director of the trust, said the state
also f~ed to provide a forum for
public input on the decision.

Newport Beach lifeguards
spent hours getting ready
for a hectic summer season,
they will probably be thank-
ing themselves now for
every one of those minutes.
Their busiest season of
the year got off to a fierY -
start because of heavy surf
pounding the shores and
nasty rip c.urrents pulling
swimmers into the ocean.
During the June 23
weekend, in merely · two
days, lifeguards , 11}.ade 229
rescues, officials said. Last
weekend, they made more
than 150. But in a testament
to them and their work,
there have been no deaths
since the beginning of sum-
mer.
But the numbers are
nothing to be surprised
about, said Newport Beach
Lifeguard Capt. Eric Bauer.
"We've had as many as
500 rescues in one day in the
past,• he said. ~
Still, weather conditions
over the last few days have
posed a few challenges, said
N~wport Beach Fire Capt.
John Blauer.
"There's still a little bit
of swf, • he said. "The
waves are now 2 to 4 fe~t or
larger.•
His department on Tues-
day was also in the process
of getting· prepared for the
Fourth of July holiday, a sin-
gle day when the beach is
expected to be packed w.ith
more than 100,000 people.
Blauer said 65 seasonal
lifeguards and seven regu-
lars will watch the beaches
today. The department may
enlist the help of anywhere
between three and eight
additional reserve lifeguards
today depending on the
requirement, he said.
The lifeguards also have
some new equipment this
summer, including automat-
ed external defibrillators,
which are used to revive
heart attack victims, and a

"To add to that, we've
had reasonable surf over the
last few days,• he said.
Cooler weather conditions
forecasted for today might
help "blow it down a little
bit,• Blauer said.
Lifeguards will patrol the
sand and the water in boats,
trucks and on foot.
•Our primary goal is to
take preventive steps so that
people don't get into dan-
gerous situations,• Blauer
said. "The most important
thing for our lifeguards is to

"Watch out for those rip
currents,• cautioned Blauer.

of sunscreen.•
Waring, who was uncon.-

found him, was released
from the hospital after sev-

• Costa Mesa's Bob Hallock
has risen from the flames and is
ready to return to the circuit.
Steve Virgen
DAILY PILOT
The flames were rising, yet Bob
Hallock hardly worried. The Costa Mesa
resident actually giggled when bis funny
car caught fire in February at the
AutoZone Wmtemationals, the first race
of the season, at the Pomona Raceway.
For Hallock, 45, the accident was just
another part of the sport and he chudded
when trying to remember the safety pro-
cedures for exiting the car. ·
His son, Benny, was also just as calm
during the fire.
•Just a normal day in paradise,• 'said
Benny Hallock, who watched the fire as
part of bis dad's racing team. •1t•s normal
circumstances for us because it happens
to racing people all the time. But this one
was just a little bigger than normal.•
The accident left Bob Hallock with
third-degree burns on his elbows and
feet and second-degree bums on his but·
• tocks. Bob Hallock suffered the bums
because bis seat belt malfunctioned and
he was stuck in the fire. He remained
calm because he said he had so much
t:rUst in the National Hot Rod Association's
safety crew.
•They saw me waving my hand
because that's all I rould do,• Bob HaDock
said. •If it wasn't for those guys, I would·
n't have made it.·
If Bob Hallock had stayed in the car
any longer it would have damaged bis
lungs, since the oxygen tank emptied
because of the length time he was in the
car.
Yet the burns and the severity of that
fire -the Hallocks had to construct a
new car-have not been able to stop Bob
Hallock's comeback to funny car racing.
