"They've been cleaning all day. But

slightly larger than its O range County

C lutching colorful sheer
scarves, toddlers rut around
the bright music room like a

It was the first day of a week-
long camp at tile Pacific School
for Music and the Arts in Costa
Mesa. The camp is designed to
introduce young children to the
arts.
Each day, campers visit with
music, drama and art teachers in
preparation for a performance
they will give Friday -the last
day of camp.
Starting with the basics, music
teacher Janet Kerce taught a
Brlefl1:,:!~ EDU~TIOI
group of 3-to 5-year-old children
about rhythm.
Sitting cross-legged in a circle
on the carpet, campers clapped
along with Kerce_ as she chanted
•bees and butterflies! The lesson
is meant to allow children to dis-
tinguish beats in music.
When th~y got that down, the
children stood up and marched
around, still chanting th.eir
mantra about bees and butter-
rues.
After a few more educational
and entertaining games and sing-
alongs, Kerce picked up a tub of
shimmering scarves, turning it
upside down to let the sheer bits
of fabric flutter over the waiting
children.

By the way, that third
rattlesnake did find me
Along time ago, I wrote a
column aQ<>ut two inci-
dents in which rat-
tlesnakes struck at me and
missed.
The first was when I was a
small boy in Wyoming. l was
pushing my way through the
sagebrush in a small ravine
when I put my hand on a rat-
tlesnake stretched out on a
rock. He struck at my hand
but was apparently sluggish
trom his winter hibemabon.
Anyway, I pulled my hand
away just m time, and he
missed..
The second modent
occurred a few years ago. Lee
Ha.senjager, h1S wife, my wife
and I had rented a houseboat
for a romanbc trip on the Ron-
da Keys. The first night, we
got to a small key called Rider
Key, way to helJ and gone out
m the Gulf of Mexico.
That night. a hurricane tut
and we sweated out several
days of trying to keep oui
houseboat afloat. Then we
made a run for that highway
that runs all the way to Key
West. We made it, and wonder
of wonders, found a spot
where someone had dredged a
boat slip out of a key over
whlcb the tughway went.
Lee was the pilot and put
the bodt tnto the slip . But the
stem was still bang1.0g against
the sides of the slip, so I
1umped ashore and started to
run through the jungle to the
stem of the houseboat. 1
almost stepped on a rat-
tlesnake. He struck at my foot
but missed. I stopped, picked
up a stick and killed him End
of original story.
An eclitor at the Ptlot put a
headlihe on that story which
read, "Here's hoping that ral-
Uesna.kes don't get a thud
chance at me."
Well, I stumbled acrO!>S that
column the other day and
belatedly realized that a rat-

chance.
I was dove hWlting in Paso
Robles wtth Bill Lester and
Don Lenk. We had stationed
ourselves in a small ravine

Stde, Bill and Don on the other.
Suddenly, they yelled,
"Bob, watch out! There's a rat-
Uesna.ke coming down in back
of you.·
l turned around, and sure
enough, there was a 4-foot rat-
tler coming right at me. I sud-
denly gave up dove hunting
and becdJlle a rattlesnake
hunter. I shot h1S head off with
my shotgun, whjch was a lot
easier than lo.ll.mg him with a
small stick, as I had done in
Ronda.
Al> far as I am concerned,
rriy expenences with rat-
. tlesnakes have come to and
end, but I'm not sure rat-
tlesnakes feel the same way.
For that reason. I do not

Artjcle on park trails. was misleading
By RldMtrcfJ. Mehren
T his letter is written to
protest your front page arti-
cle (•Planners pave way for
some park trails,• July 26), regard-
ing the Costa Mesa Planning
Commission meeting July 24 and
the issue of F.airview Park.
I believe the lead sentence and
first paragraph REBUnAL imply that only
one trail in the
park will be left unpaved. I don't
know if this is intentional, but the
article does nothing in further sen-
tences or paragrapbs to clarify the
issue or present the true facts.
The truth is that this is one
more trail left unpaved in addition
to more than 6.5 miles of unpaved
trails throughout the park.
The City CoWlcil-approved
Can Rodman find a
place in South County?
Regarding the noise problem
on Ocean Front in Newport
Beach: Asking nicely hasn't
worked, complaining vociferously
hasn't worked and 100 visits by
police officers haven 't worked.
I don't live in the city, but some-
times it takes an outsider's view to
see the solution. It's been right
under your noses all along.
Instead of treating the Dennis
Rodman residence liJce any other
home, tre,at it like you've treated ·
the airport. Simply plact! time con-
straints, capacity limits and noise
resbictions on it.
A hotline could be set up so
that neighbors could simply call in
and press 1 for excessive noise, 2
for partying later than is autho-
rized, etc.
Then if all else fails, try to move
him to South County.

No vote of confidence
for the candidates
The slate of new candidates for
the Newport Beach City CoWldl is
so boring that it makes you want
to scream. When asked a simple
question regarding an important
new city policy -Greenlight or
'Ifaffic Phasing Ordinance -their
reply: •1 dunno.·
Come on, people. Do we have
to spell it out for them?
Should the people decide the
fate of proposed 10-story buildings
or other developments that will
master plan for Fairview Park des-
'ignates approximately three miles
of paved trails and almost seven
miles of unpaved trails.
At present, the park bas only
one and a half miles of paved
trails. The additional paved trails
will provide connections for the
master plan of bike ways and will
not adversely affect the park's
habitat restoration.
Most of the additional paved
trails will travel between the
park's northeast entrance, across
the flood control bridge over the
Fairview Channel, and the park's
entrance at the Placentia Avenue
traffic signal.
Since no trail presently exists
there, it Will not require paving
over an ~xisting dirt trail.
I believe the Reader Hotline
question was also poorly worded
and implies there is a proposal
that most of the Fairview Park
trails should be paved. This is
totally untrue and is an attempt, in
my opinion. to imply misinfonna-
tion in order to upset people
unnecessarily.
While much of the article is fas:;-
tual, I think those parts of the artf.
cle which catch the public's eye
and are most likely to be read are
written in a way to mislead the
reader as to the facts and to create
an emotional respo'D.Se against the
park trail plan.
No one has proposed that any
more than approximately three
miles of trails will be paved, and
no one has proposed that most of
the trails at Fairview Park should
be paved ..
Also, I would like to eomment
regarding the article's quote from

City government needs
to keep operating
I was disappointed to read that
Councilman Tod Ridgeway is not
prepared to weigh in on our sig-
nificant projects until the Green-
lightfn'affic Phasing initiatives
debate is resolved in the Nov. 7
election.
Should city government stop
when someone decides, to gather
Charles Appell regarding the
park's cr.oss-country course:
The Fairview Park Advisory
Committee and the park planners
have gone to great lengths to pre-
serve the approved cross-country
course and to keep it on natural,
unpaved surfaces. ln spite of reas-
surances that this is the fact,
Appell persists in clauning the
plan would damage or eliminate
the cross-country course. 1bis is ,
not true is spite of his claims.
ff people would take the time to
analyze the entire Fairview Park

that while not perfect it does a
good job of meeting the needs of
all Costa Mesa citizens.

EDUCATIONAUY SPEAKING
Forget counCil,
get Rodman for
school board
Rumors abound about Den-
nis Rodman running for
the Newport Beach City
Council. I hope they aren't true.
I hope he runs instead for the
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District Board of Education . . nus year. there are three
school board seats up for elec-
tion. So far, the only announced
candidates are the jncumbents.
Not too many years ago, there
were nine people who ran for
·the school board. That gave the
voting public a choice. Forums
were held all over Newport-
Mesa, where voters could direct-
ly question the candidates. We
learned something about the
candidates' views. It also got
-voters thinking about education
and what they wanted schools
and teaching to look like in the
future.
I'm not saying that Rodman
would make a better school
board member than the incum-
bents, because I don't know
whether he has any qualifica-
tions. I don't know what hls
goals are for our local schools.
Bot it would provide him with
a salary, health benefits and a
retirement plan. It would gwe
his neighbors a break from the
parties for two nights a month,
when the board meets. It might
also liven up the meetings and
make more people keep an eye
on the decision makers for our
schools.
Even if you aren't Rodman, I
hope you will seriously consider
running for a school board spot.
Meanwhile, maybe Rodman
could give us some insight on

Big Canyon head pro Kelly Manos
said, following Friday's
edge-ef-your-seat finish in the
Jones Cup at Newport Beach
Country Club, where Sargent's
near-impossible flop shot at 18 set
up a short birdie putt to wiil the Cup.
Sargent's 60-foot birdie putt on
No. 2 and his 45-footer on 16 were
spectacular sights, but hls play at
18 was an incredible way to cap
the first-ever Jones Cup. His ball
buried deep in the rough, Sargent
flopped out of trouble with a
57-degree wed9e and, essentially,
ended the Jones Cup in dramatic

After Hahn recovered on 17 with

One shot separated champion
Mesa Verde (2-under 69) and

and one stroke was the difference
between Santa Ana (even-par 71)

With the victory, Sargent also

Santa Ana, howevef, bogeyed
