Relief, however, is in sight: Images Salon in Corona del Mar is having a cut-a-thon Sept. 10 to raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Three-Day Walle. The event will feature $25 haircuts dlld $10 manicures, so maybe we can get our ravaged cuticles dealt with even as we're getting our locks snipped into respectability. Why, you ask, is the cut-a-thon event being appended to the breast cancer walk? Why not just have the walk and be done with it? We're not clear on the logic, to be honest. But if it can make our hair look any better, we're not going to worry about it. EVERYBODY HAD AN OCEAN ... Before we are rescued from our mop-top look, perhaps we and our hairstyle will sc.oot over to 1\iangle Square for a surf fashion show Aug. 26. The event. organizers say, will fea- ture all manner of surfing-related garb and a performance by Orange County surf band, The Stingrays. The Stingrays, to judge by the photos m their media kit, do not favor the bowl-cut couture. However, we are convinced that the hippest of the hip in surf culture must be aware of the bowl cut's essential brilliance. We note, by the way, that Project Wipe Out of Hoag Hospital will also be at T\1.angle Square to distribute info on the perils of neck injuries. Project Wipe Out wants to make sme surfers and swimmers don't crash into the sand head-first and e11d up with broken necks. But you can also hurt your neck by head-banging too much to loud rock 'n' roll. So U The Stingrays really start to crank out the tunes, please, be safe. POLICE FILES Daily Pilot .. t - Thoodoy, August 10, 2000 A3 Speaki, ngpersonally, GOP's view on gays just pla,in dumb ' My hyperactive guilt required me to watch at least a portion of the Republican National Convention. 1n the process, I became intrigued by the sto- ry of Mary Cheney, the reportedly openly gay younger daughter of George W. Bush's running mate, Dick Cheney. When a television reporter referred to the Cheney's "gay daughter,• Mary's mother responded angrily that "Mary has never declared.Qlch a thing· and added that she is not going to talk about her daughters' personal lives -although she already had talk$bout her other daughter, who is properly married and has three children. Because this topic isn't going to go away in the long campaign ahead, Dick and Lynne Cheney need to deade -whatever Mary's wish~ may be - how to handle it publicly. If Mary Cheney is indeed gay -and there seems ample evidence in published accounts that this is likely- two suggestions occur to me. First, il the Repu~licans Joseph N. Bell THE BEU CURVE are serious about this "com· passionate conservatism• stuff, they can demonstrate 1t dramatically by treating Mary no less honestly than any of the other candidates' children. And, second, it is just as important for parents as it is for the gay person to accept, respect and appreo- ate who they are. I speak from experience. I have a sister-in-law who is gay. She also has a life part- ner, two delightful and weU- adjusted children and a career of devoted public ser- vice in which she is presently in charge of some 150 subor- dinates -mostly men -at a job level achieved by very few women. And she didn't get there easily. · When she realized in her teen years that her sexual orientation was different from most of her classmates, she panlcked. For 10 years, she struggled desperately in dozens of ways to deny those feelings. The last of those years she spent with Christ· ian fundamentalists who assured her that while she was getting tixed, it was all right to have homosexual feelings but not to act on them. ·It took me a long time to realize that what I was really doing,• she told me the other day, "was hidlng from myself m religion. Now, I'm a whole person who has a healthy relationship witb God. I'm a practicing Cluistian, secure in the knowledge that God accepts me for who I am.• So does her family. My sister-in-law, her partner and the!! two children are proud and deeply loved members of our extended family. There is no need fo r them to hide themselves in the bosom of Uus family or for the family to hide them from the outside ' world. They a.re warm. com· passionate, intelligent, hard- working and thoughtful human beings who wonder -as I do -why a large seg- ment of the society in which they live finds it necessary to use a few scattered and obscure biblical passages to reduce them to subhumans. The Cheney situation is not a new problem for the Republicans. Last month, for example, the scion of one of Massachusetts' most promi- nent Republican families withdrew from the party because he considers the anti-gay planks in the party platform antagonistic to the rights of his lesbian daugh· ter. A few years earlier, Barry Goldwater -who was once •Mr. Republican· -assailed the party for "fighting the gays• and insisted on not just tolerance, but acceptance of the lifestyle of his gay grand- son and grandniece. -· I have no knowledge of the personal feelings or the Republican candidates on this matter. The feelings that have been expressed are political. Any suggestion of official acceptance or gay people is anathema to the Christian Right and therefore politically dangerous. The brief exposure of the Republicans' only acknowl- edged gay congressman - Jim Kolbe of Arizona -on the convention platfonn was probably pushing the edges, even for "com~sionate conservatives. It was report- ed that some members of the 'rexas delegation prayed for him during his four-minute speech. But shouldn't this be a matter that transcends politi- cal exped.lency? A set of val- ues that would subordmate the humanity of a loved one to the voting muscle of any ·segment of society makes "compassionate conser- vatism• sound like the ulti- mate hypocnsy. U this catch phrase is to have any mean- ing at all, shouldn't it be put into practice across the board? The complaint about the invasion of the private lJves of candidates and theu fanu- lles is legitimate. But the can- didates can't have it both ways. They can't use the per· sonal achievements of one child -as Lynne Cheney did with her older daughter -and then insist on a differ· ent set of rules fpr another. And they can't demand pn· vacy for themselves while looking the other way it it ts denied to the opposibon. When my s:ister-lll·klw told us about her struggle in an emotional meeting Wlth her immediate fdJTU.ly, there was neither consterrldti,oo. recnrninabon nor denial. Only love and support that started with her parents and extended lhtflugh her sib· lings and theu mates If any- thing, that has grown stronger m the yedrs since. That ts dnd properly· should be a ffidtler to be set- tled within the famtly But 1t is also d mattPr lhdt should cause nruther publlc shdffie nor embarrassment. It was clear Williams' tradema.rk tenacity and effortless ability to at once charm and push forward the bureau's agenda was miss- ing from the proceedings. "Where's our checki" said Mayor John Noyes with a smile, referring to the sym- bolic oversized $21-million check Williams proudly pre- sented to the City Council in April. The money was drawn from tourist tax rev- enues. "This time I come to you empty-banded,· Schielein said. Still, Williams' stamp was all over the bureau's accom- plishments. The bureau booked 50 meetings and 17 trade shows, had 10 sales trips and landed 23 conference ads in various publications. It secured the California . The citizens committee and engin~ have remained at an impasse even after seven sometimes very heated monthly meetings. •we've been talking about the same issues over and over,• Naghavi said. "We agreed that we may disagree, but we both under- stand each other's concerns. The merchants, who met with Naghavi on Tuesday, say a wider East 17th Street would threaten the streets "mom-and-pop" feel. They advocate planting new trees and adding bus turnouts along the street. Members of the city-formed com- mittee -who in the spring, feeling as though discussions with the. city wer~ going nowhere, spun off into a grass-roots neighborhood organiza- tion -are hanging bold-lettered banners from their shops and gather- ing signatures from other project opponents. 'Steve' is clever take on philosophy I n •nto of Steve,• Dex (an amusing Donal Logue) bas extensively studied philosophy. He co.n quote any of the great philosophers to make a point ln a conver- sation. He has even come up with bls own philosophy of life, the Tao of Steve. Steve is the prototype of the cool American male, exemplified by Steve Austin ("The Six Million Dollar Man•), Steve McGarrett ("Hawaii 5-0") and most important, Steve McQueen. Dex's Tao is a Zen-like way to be cool like Steve, espe- cially when it comes to suc- cess with women. Although Dex is clearly intelligent, be has missed the main point of philosophy. All the great philosophers were striving for a greater under- standing of life and from that a deeper fulfillment. Dex is all surface ahd no depth. He uses philosophy only to justify his slacker existence and to seduce women. As one of Dex's friends suggests, his philosophy has gotten in the way of his having a life. Syd, wondeifully portrayed by Greer Goodman (who also co-wrote the script with Dun- can North and Jenniphr Goodman), has depth and complexity as well as beauty. None of Dex's lines work on her, and she is quick to notice the shallowness of his life. Goodman shows you what Syd is thinking or feeling just by her facial expression or the look in her eyes. Because they need to share a truck and have mutual friends, Dex and Syd end up spending a lot of time together. Dex is constantly discussing his views while trying to find a way to sway Syd in bls favor. Syd is just as consistently shooting down bls views and passes. Tricia Behle Syd is a challenge to the •nto of Steve." Unfortu· nately, the film then lapses into a rather predictable plot At certain times in the story, Syd makes choices that make no sense based on her character up to that point. These weak- nesses can be overlooked rather easily, because •Tao• also has many strengths. The scenery around Santa Fe, N.M., is beautiful. The background music is good and blends with the story. The best reasons to see the •Tao of Steve,• though, are the clever dialogue, humorous scenes and plenty of laughs. Violet is a tad melodramatic, but that's nicely balanced by the other outrageous, over- the-top women and the quiet- ly alluring and arousing Kevin O'Donnell (Adam Gard.a). The supporting cast makes this movie. Mart.a Bel- lo as Lil, the bar's owner, is sharp and entertaining. It's not an original character for her -she appears to be redoing her personality in "Payback" -but it's a good perfonnance and probably the best of the movie. John Goodman, as Violet's father, is just as gruff and lovable as always. Tyra Banlcs' cameo was perfect as just a cameo. It's easy to tell that pnr ducer Jerry Bruckheimer is better with action films. The only action in this film, the energetic dance scenes, are .the best part will have every- one's feet tapping. The decor is dark wood and green leather, with beer company logo mirrors adorning the walls. A TV over the bar is tuned to the sporting event du jour, and I suspect Monahan's will be a popular spot during football season. Although beer and spirits are obviously the feature at Skosh's, Monahan wisely knows the importance of good pub food. We're not talking gourmet or trendy here -no drizzled sauces or fancy garnish. Just steaks, chops and some old favorites like corned beef and cabbage or lamb stew. Of course, any good pub needs a variety of appetizers to munch on while sharpen- ing your darts, and Mona- han's obliges. The lamb stew ($10.50) is a traditional favorite. Chunks of lamb are cooked slowly in a savory tomato- based sauce with vegetables and herbs and served over a bed of garlicky mashed potatoes. Good comfort food that's begging to be washed down with a pint of stout. The braised hall chicken is a bargain at $12.50. Mild white filets are fried in batter made with Harp beer and served with the tradi- tional pub fries and a tangy homemade tartar sauce. I hall-expected them to be served wrappe.d in newspa· per, London style, but then Monahan's got the Health Department to worry about. No wait, he's the mayor - I'll bet he could get away with it. My only disappointment at Skosh Monahan's was the desserts. A chocolate cake with cappuccino sauce ($5) obviously came right out of the refrigerator and lacked the moist freshness l was expecting. The apple cobbler ($5) has a healthy portion of fruit flavored with cinnamon and topped with ice cream, but where was the cobbler crust? At least on mine it was virtual- ly nonexistent. Peirsol's;Olympic &earns Start today W e wish Aaron Peirsol good speed. The Newport Harbor · High School j\inior will begin his quest today to make the U.S. Olympic swim team when the starter's gun goes off in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke. Peirsol, 17, is expected to qualify for the finals Friday, but he then may run into some rough water. The 100-meter race -a sprint that favc,rs muscle over endurance -isn't his best event. But at the Olympic trials, anything can hap- pen. . His best chance of making the 2000 Summer Garnes comes in the 200-meter backstroke, a grueling event in which he's ranked second in the world. His main rival is record-holder Lenfly Krayzelburg, who was unbeaten at 200 m~ters for four years until Peirsol upset him last month. And so a true rivalry has begun. Not just for who will make the U.S. Olympic team, but for winning a gold medal in Sydney, Australia, in September. It's nice to see a local athlete make good in the Olympics, though hardly an unusual sight. We've had plenty of them over the years -including kayaker Sheila Conover, long-jumper Kim Attle- sey, rower Brad Lewis, shotputter Bon- nie Dasse, swimmers Toni Hewitt, Kurt Krumpholtz an~ John Mo'ffet; tennis player Lindsay Davenport, volleyball player Steve Tunmons , and water polo team members Jamie Bergeson, Jim ~ Kruse, Eric Lindroth, Chris Oeding and Kevin Robertson. compete Down Under this year. After three weeks of being a can- dJdate, this is why I believe there are not more announced candi- dates for the three Newport Beach Council positions: t . Disdosures: The city candi- date handbook is more than an inch thick with detailed forms and reporting requirements. lnduded · are mandatory financial and con- flict-of-interest disdosures and ongoing contribution reports, all of which is open-book to the public without limitation. And those com- plicated reports must be continu- ally updated. 2. The hours: J estimate the campaigning will equate to six to eight weeks of full-time work and that the council job will take 20 hours per week. That is time, attention and patience taken away from family, growing children, business. 3. Election costs: ln my view, $40,000 to $70,000 is the estimat- ed cost per council seat, with the probability that you will raise 30% to 50% -ii you have the right connections, and you pay the bctl· anee. 4. Public scrutiny and access: Your personal affairs are now pub- lic affairs, and your past is always a target for scrutiny, disdosure and criticism. Your official deci- sions and vote will alienate a number of people each time, and you will probably lose personal friends. Your remaining private time will be intenupted and llis- rupted by citizen pleas, questions and complaints. But, with all of those apparent negative features, our representa- tive form of government -even m the tarnished image of many of our current elected officials - reqwres candJdates to overlook these problems and run for public office. I encourage more to do so for this upcoming election. Yes, even in my District 7 race. That is how the system works. JOHN HEFFERNAN Newport Beach The unwelcome news that three incumbent school board members may get a free ride, by running unopposed this fall, hits our community rather hard. The pwpose of periodic elec- tions is not only to meet and satis- fy the requirements of the democ- ratic process. Elections also give the citizenry a chance to find out a little more about their schools and students. "Marianne just bas that natural swing,• said Duffield, the local electric boat aficionado and Santa Ana Country Club member. Towersey has been involved 1n memorable rounds her entire career, including. at age 16, a victory in match play over tuture LPG.A Jiall of Pamer JoAnne Carner (nee Gunderson) in the first round of the 1967 U.S. Women's Amateur. Towersey, a mother of two sons, is a frequent tournament playE}r a.nd considered a favorite wherever she tees it up. ·u you're going to play in anything, you're probably going to play against Marianne. She plays in everything,• said Mesa Verde Country Club women's champion Denise Woodard, part of the Tea Cup Classic foursome with Towersey, Colette Taormina of Big Canyon and Debbie Albright of Newport Beach. Towersey went on to the quarterfinals that year, and a 1999 issue of GoU World magazine included Towersey's win over Gunderson as one of the country's 10 greatest upsets of the century. This year, leading up to Tea Cup Classic N and the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, also at Big Canyon (Oct .. 3-8), one of Towersey's most impressive golf feats was shooting 69 at Big Canyon. Last year in Tea Cup Classic ID. Towersey achieved the remarkable after competing for 35 holes in the match-play finals of the Women's Southern California Championships at Mission Viejo Country Club, then heading over lo Mesa Verde to make a delayed afternoon tee time and win the event by seven strokes. And, with a different putter, because she left hers behind. After several rounds in the low-to-mid 70s by numerous women since the course at Big Canyon was reconstructed in the fall of 1998, Tuwersey became the first to break 70 in the La~es/Guest-Oay, sin.king five birdies (along with two bogeys) in her record-setting performance. Towersey cracked the 70 barrier for only the second time in ber distinguished amateur career. She also shot 69 in a round last year in Minneapolis. "Maybe I was too tired to be nervous (about playing m the Tea Cup),· said Towersey, who also won Tea Cup Classic ll at Santa ~a in 1998 by seven stroke5. Towersey completed a 53-hole day last Aug. 13. opening the Tea Cup Classic with a birdie, aiter barely miSsing eagle when she nailed her second shot from the left rough to within two inches of the flag. Towersey does not hold the women's course record at Santa /u}a, a mark that belongs to LPGA Tour member Pearl Sinn, who carded a 63 in early January 1999 -ironically, while playing with Towersey. She tapped in for birdie with her driver, because her putter was missing (she later borrowed a putter from the Mesa Verde pro shop). Towersey started wtth only 12 clubs in Towersey, who woo her most recent SACC title {1999) by 36 strokes, was a primary reason the Tea Cup Classic was created by the Daily Pilot. The large margins or victory by most of the women's club champions in the area spurred the idea for the 18-hole shootout. DEEP SEA \.
