after the City Council decided not to
restore the Huscroft House, two poten-

rescuing it from demolition.

J ane Altman~Dwan, another Newport

calls to notify the city of her interest. ·
The City Council on Monday decided
to put the house up for sale instead of
restoring it and moving it to Fairview
Park as originally planned. If a buyer
can't be found for the 1912 Craftsman-

be tom down.
But two Newport Beach residents are
hoping to save the house.

That's a phone message
the city's residents will soon
be able to bear when they call
in to Newport Beach's auto-
mated information line.
Now city officials are still
figuring out what kind of
messages should go on the
system and all departments
are collecting answers to
questions that are asked most
frequently.
It will take about two
months until the system is up
and running, said Dan Auger,
the city's telecommunications
and network coordinator.

The $1051595 system,
approved by City Council
members in February, is
designed to improve Newport
Beach's customer service,
said Gail McElroy. the city'$
spokeswoman.
"This is a way to 'staff' City
Hall to answer questions at all
hours of the day on hundreds
of topics,• ·she said. "The
most frequently asked ques-
tions, from barking dogs to
getting weather information
to obtaining a permit, can be
answered quickly, concisely
and consistently.•
And because the system.
which comes from Virginia-
based Tele-Works Inc., never
sleeps, residents won't have
to check their watches to
e.nsure they're calling during
business hours. Other Cali-
fornia dti~ that already use
the system include Hunting-
ton Beach, Fullerton, Dia-
mond Bar and San Diego.
~ San Clemente, where
city offidall launched a simi-
lar information line in May,
the bulk of calls to the new
phone 1ystem are made,
"mainly on weekendl, when
we're not here,• said Laura
Reinlimar, who administers
San Clemente's information
line. She added that about
2,000 people had called the
new number IO far.
Residents in that d1y ~
now 11.sten to a bout 250 mes-
sages with information on
everything ranging from
adop~ animals to water-
quality complaJnts. Many
messages allo allow residents
to request faxes with addi-
tional information.
Tele-Works employees
recorded most of the mes-
sages after city offici.als sent
the desired meuages to the
company. A small number of
messages, which are changed
frequently, are recorded by
dty staff members them-
selves, Reinsim1u said.
With about 190 emplofees
-as opposed to almost 150 in
Newport Beach -the system
also helps San Clemente city
officials to manage their
workload better.
"We all wear a lot of bats

Newport Beach's system will

But in either case, the last
thing they'll hear will sound
somewhat like this: •Thank

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL; There's
a gunslinger's attitude around
Estancia High these days. ,.
E standa High football, for the moste part, bas found itself associated
with such terms as •backs to the

For a long time, a lack ol administrative backing
(present company excepted) bas been a sore spot,

Jerry Howell at Costa Mesa High.
Estancia alumni include fonner coaches Ed

Before entering the college

him after that. I could see that.•
Spencer was an assistant coach at
Cal Lutheran from 1989 to 1994 and in
the Australian National Basketball

COSTA MESA CITY
CHAMPIONSHIP: O'Meara
among former winners;
deadline nears for this
year's event Aug. 4-5
at Costa Mesa Golf & CC.
M ost people knew there
was something special
about Mark O'Meara's
golf game when he played in the
Will Jordan Classic in 1979 at
Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
O'Meara, then of Mission Viejo
and now a star on the PGA ToUI,
won the U.S. Amateur champioTl5hip
a week earlier ln Cleveland, Ohio,
defeating John Cook in the finaJ, 8

The late Joe Costello. who
founded the popular Will Jordan
Classic -now officially the Costa
Mesa City ChampioTl5hip -in 1973
when he was president of the Costa

O'Meara's Victory here m '79 as one
of the championship's greatest
moments.
"(O'Meara) drove all the way from
Cleveland to Costa Mesa to play in
this townament, • Costello once said.
"That's how
important this
tournament was
to O'Meara."
in 1979,
O'Meara and
Brad Greer
squared off in a
two-hole playoff,
before O'Meara
won, and, shortly
thereafter, turned
pro. O'Meara won Richard Dunn the Masters and
Bntish Open tn GOlf

45-yard wedge shot to within four
feet of the flag.
Simpson, who sank the foUI-footer
to win that year, won the 1987 U.S.

One of the more recent Costa
Mesa city champions. Bryan Saltus
(Newport Harbor High), could be the
next one to make it big. The t 995
and '96 Costa Mesa champion
qualified for the Canadian Tow this
summer, finishing tied for fifth out of
140 players ln a qua.1.Jfier at
