The first time I drove into
the parking lot of the
Daily Pilot, I thought l
was going to puke.
I was on my way to meet
· Steve Marble, the managing
editor, to talk about a possi-
ble internship. Yeah, ~ was
nervous.
Until that day, my only
exposure to journalism was
through my college newspa-
per, where the toughest
issues I tack.led were school
government elections and a
small demonstration at»ut
tuition increases.
Aside from the aftermath
of a few bad fish tacos in
Mexico, and the day I
defended my master's thesis
at Cal State Fullerton, the
urge to lose my lunch at
work bad never again befall-
en me. Until two weeks ago,
when I bad to face Steve and
Bill Lobdell and Tony Dodero
and muster up these words:
"I'm leaving.•
Since that day -seven
years ago -when I shook
with anticipation at the
prospect of making journal-
ism a career, I've leemed
from the best and had more
than my share of fun.
Besides the camaraderie
inside the newsroom. I've
had the opportunity to meet
and interview celebrities,
jazz greats, Olympic gold
medalists, and everyday peo-
ple who are caught in not-so-
everyday situations.
I can't count the times
someone declared: "I used to

I played high school foot-
ball.• That community spirit.
which is steej>ed in the con-
tent of this paper, is also evi-
dent in the people who run
it.
And that's what I'll miss
the most: the adrenaline that
comes with working together
on a breaking news story1
bantering over the order of
the Pilot's 103 most irifluen-
tial people1 whistling the
•Jeopardy• theme in our edi-
torial budget meetings; get-ting the paper done when
there's 30 minutes to dead-
line.
Then there's the other fun
stuff: trying to persuade Gay

grand kids to see •Thomas

Thcal band hopes to set stage on fire
•Group of Corona del

take aim at rock'star
status with their first

Alex Coolman
DAILY PILOT
COSTA MESA -Once
they're all huge international
rock stars, the members of
Kaster 1roy plan to take their
act to the next level.
"I want to light my drum kit
on fire,· said 11\ad Nobuhara,
the 17-year-old drummer.
Ryan Stockwell. the 16-year-
old lead guitarist, said be plans
to acquire some kind of mas-
sive, earsplitting amplifier.
Also a possibility, the band
decided. was the idea of adding
a few elephants to the stage
show.
But Kaster 'Troy -with no
flames, pachyderms or mon-
ster amps-is already rocking
out They're rocking on a small
scale, it's true, but that'& they
way they like it.
The group plays their first
big show tonight at Chain
Reaction in Anaheim.
For the group members,
who dfe all Costa Mesa resi-
dents and <::orona del Mar High
seniors, the satisfaction of being
in a band has a lot more to do
with ma.king music that peo-
ple enjoy than trying to cash in
on some vague idea of fame.
The group -its name is
drawn from that of the villain of
the 1997 movie "Face/Off" -
plays up-tempo pop punk. the
sort of thing that bands like

Pop punk band Kaster Troy plays at Chain Reactton in Anaheim tonight From l~ft,

kastertroy.
Bad Religion, Green Day and
Blink 182 have made famous.
Their demo CD, with its
crunchy guitars, popping
snares and pleasantly snotty
vocals sounds, like something
that would sound right at home
on KROQ, Los Angeles' alter-
native music station.
With one important qualifi-
cation, though:·
"We're not rap metal!"
insisted Randy Myers, 17, the
singer and rhythm guitarist.
For all their catchy riffs and
fast rhythms, Kaster 'Troy is a
fairly introspective act: The
exuberance of Myers and
Stockwell is balanced by the
thoughtful presence of
Nobuhara and bassist Chris
Barker, 17.
The band.mates seem happy
-and even a little surprised -
that people enj_oy their music.
"The fact that we can get
50 people to pay money and
drive half an hour to see us, I
think, is amazing," Myers said.
But this modest success is
not something that's gone to
their heads.
"I don't want to say, 'Screw
college and screw the rest of
my life' just to follow some lit-
tle dream," Myers said.
~Punk rock iS so good now.
It's hard (to compete] "
So Kaster 'Troy is stick:lng to
what they en1oy, and hoping
other people dig it. The flames
and elephants, for now, can
wait.

HllllllS POSTPONED
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Planning Commis-
sion postponed two public
hearings until its next meet-
ing Aug. 28.
The hearings were for a
development proposal for a
site at 2100 and 2130
canyon Drive, and for per-
mits for the Q!Club Cafe,
1525 Mesa Verde Drive East.
WHAT rT MEANS:
Instant
Jungle Prop-
erties, LLC.
owner of the
canyon Drive
property, had
originally proposed a 22-
unit development for the
site. but redesigned the
plans after hearing neigh-
bors' and planning staff's
concerns.
The new proposal
includes 18 single-family
homes. modified grading
and a plan to retain the
existing ficus tree at the
site.
The issue was continued
to allow city consultants to
change project documents
to reflect the new design
proposal.
Q-Club cafe has request-
ed permits to upgrade its
beer and wine license to
allow sales of hard akohol,
to add a 234-square-foot
outdoor dining and smok-
ing patio, and to change its
parking configuration to ·
accommodate the patio.
The existing and pro-
posed permits were origi-

SORRY, NO BOOZE
WHAT HAPPENED:
The commission denied a
beer and wine license
request for Roman's Mar-
ket. 2400 Newport Blvd.,
Suite A-3.
WHAT rT MEANS:
The mar-
ket, which
sells conve-
nience items
and deli prod-
ucts, will not
be allowed to sell alcohol.
Four licenses are allowed
in the neighborhood,
according to state Alcoholic
Beverage Control, and five
already exist.
The market is also in a
high-crime area, a condition
that prevents the commis-
sion from granting an
exception to the state Alco-
holic Beverage Control reg-
ulation.
WHAT THEY SAID:
•tt's unfortunate that
[the market) happens to be
located in a place that is
high<rime and where there
are already other licenses,"
said Commissioner Ketrlno
Foley, speaking to Roman's
Market representative
AnNmde Roman. "I feel
for you and the work you
do in the store, but I just
can't find the requirements
necessary to approve the
license.•

bind him to do so, the docu-
ments said.
The city is scheduled to
face Thrneny in trial later this
month.
At a City Coundl meeting
last week, Michael Wool-
bright. the director of the
House of Sarah in Mesa
North, pleaded for the city to
allow his stllte-contracted
halfway house to remain
open. He said the home,
Orange County's only work
furlough program exclusively
for women, has helped its res-
idents re-integrate mto soci-
ety.
•we have to be consistent
with our orctinance, • Mona-
han said.
Although police receive
frequent calls about suspi-
cions and noise complaints at
many of the city's group
homes, no major &rimes stem-
ming from a home has been
reported recently.
· However, the council this
spring passed the orctinance
that makes it illegal to oper-·
ate a group home with more
than six occupants in a resi-
dential neighborhood.
Almost two years ago, the
city -after repeated com-
plaints from residents -com-
missioned a study to count
bow many halfway houses,
drug and alcohol treatment
centers, and nursing homes
were located in Costa Mesa.
The report found that more
than 104 group homes were
in the city. Of those, 62 were
reported to be drug and alco-
hol treatment centers, malung
the concentration of such
homes here to be more than
to~ times the county aver-
age.-
The report also found that
as many as 20 of the group
homes operating in residen-
tial neighborhoods had been
violating city ordinances.
Most of the neighbors of
the homeless shelter on Cork
Lane said they ctidn't have
specific complaints about the
home. But four families on the
block saJd they would rather
have a family Llvmg there.
"I guess she's doing all
right.• said Lee Fleener, 66,
who lives three doors away
from Namaste's shelter. "But I
wish they were gone, of
course. It's bad for the neigh-
borhood."

Bell climbed into a Zodiac
and motored over to the
stalled boat, towing it to safe-
ty.
The identity of the boat
occupants is unknown. Their
boat, it turned out, was a
rental.
Ada.ms and Bell towed the
boat back to the rental com-
pany.
·we have no idea why the
engine failed,• Adams said. ·we do know that they didn't
have a radio and they didn't
have a paddle. ... They were
sitting there quite awhile.
Nobody seemed to come to
their rescue.•
lt's not the first time the
Argus has helped out boaters
in distress.
But the antique vessel,
which was built in Denmark
in 1905, is hardly intended to
be a rescue craft. The only
real ~dvantage it had over
most of tbe other yachts in the
water that day was that it was
staffed by a group of curiout
Boy Scouts.
THOMAS
CONTINUED FROM 1
help for Thomas is more than a
fight with bureaucracy: it's an
attempt to hold together the
last remnants of her family.
On a recent afternoon. Meek
was sorting through a stack of
paper, forms she'd printed from
the Internet. The papers were
dense with terms like • unnec-
essary institutionalization" and
"litigation strategies,· and
Meek looked like she'd had
about as much of this kind of
reading as she could take.
Thomas stood at the front
door, pulling unhappily al the
handle and complaining that
he wanted to go outside.
"Jn a minute." Meek told
him. "We'll go and get you
some ice creanr. •
These kinds of minor par-
enting tasks -getting a treat,
buying a toy -are things 40-
year-old Meek can handle. But
Thomas, who bas develop-
mental disorders that cause him
to be impatient, temperamental
and sometimes violent, needs
more than a few gentle bribes.
l:homas needs some profes-
sional help. And Meek says her
efforts"to obtain it -from the
county and the school district -
haven't been fruitful.
Though Thomas, who
attends Step by Step preschool,
is in a special education pro-
gram, Meek is concerned that
the school's approach -wtuch
focuses on his learrung disabil-
ities -isn't as broad as 1t should
be.
"It doesn't treat the behav-
10ral component of his prob-
lem,· she said.
The d.ltticitlty Meek is· hav-
mg in getting help for her son
has its roots in the nature of hls
behavior. Though he's obVi-
ously o troubled child, and
though Meek can recite a list of
injuf\es sbe's'. received at his
handS, Thomas' behavior does
not fit neatly into a single diag-
nostic category.
The most obvious behaviordl
difficulties involve his unpre-
dictable temper and certain
physical quirks, such as hand
fluttering and occasionally poor
coordination. Meek thinks her
son is autistic, and she's got doc-
tors to say as much.
But so far it's been imposs1-
ble to get county and school
district ofiidals to agree with
this diagnosis and to provide
the services -such as a par-
enting aide -that Meek says
she needs.
The Regional Center of
Orange County is the nonprof-
it agency that contracts with
the state of California to pro-
vide services for people with
developmental disabilities.
Karen Tuylon a spokeswoman
for the center, sald the process
of getting services for a child
can sometimes be challenging.
·It's hard for parents and
families, too, 11 she saJd. "lt can
be overwhelming.•
However, Tuylor said the cat-
egories used for· assessing lhe
needs of mdiViduals are far from
arbitrary.
"It's ve ry comprehensive,
and we do have specific crite-
ria -medical, psychological
and soaal assessments -: ihat
are evaluated.
"The needs are dei'ermifled
on an individual basis·and we
have certam guidelines that we
follow for determining what ser-
vtces• will be given. "If par-
ents don't agree, they do have
the right to appeal.·
Both the Regional Center
and the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District are prohibited
from discussing the cases of
individual students. But Patrick
Ryan, the director of special
educabon for Newport-Mesa,
S<Ud the district strives to pro-
vide the best possible care for its
students.
"We're legally bound as a
publlc enbty to provide the ser-
vtces for students who are eli-
gible, dJ1d we're also reqw:red to
find out who's e ligible, and we
have dll those processes 10
place.• RydJl said.
For Meek. though, negob-
a llng the bureaucracy has
proved to be a tinng and expen-
sive process.
At d September meeting, she
IS scheduled to negotiate with
the Regional Center over the
issue of what services Thomas
should receive. But she says
she worries that she won't have
enough money to pay for the
attorneys she needs to fight the
case.
"What I'm tryl.Og to get ts
the chance lo keep my son, and
to prevent hlm from going to
an msbtution, • she said.
