Watch out in Newport Harbor on Sunday
as Art Gronsky will be firing the starting
gun for the 66th annual Flight of the Lasers, as he
has been doing for the past 20 years. The rumor
from last year is he almost shot down a jet ta.king

The Motor Yacht Vida ll tbe largest yacht to ever enter Newport Harbor al 234 feet long.
Originally known as the Plight of the Snow-
birds, then in the early '70s as the Flight of the
Kites, and now the Lasers, this sailing event is
chaired by Seymour Beek, owner of the Balboa
Island Feny boats and Island Marine Fuel. Sey-

N ewport Harbor has seen its share
of large yachts through the yea.rs.
There was the Motor Ship
Stranger at 230 feet; the Goodwill at 161
feet, the Pioneer at 172 feet; and the
Steam Yacht Stranger at 175 feet.
However, the largest yacht to ever
enter Newport Harbor is the Motor
Yacht Vida, at 234 feet.
This large clipper-bowed diesel yacht
considered Newport Harbor her home
port from 1939 to 1942. Vida had a beam
of 34 feet and a draft of 12 feet. She was
powered with two Winton dR!sel
engines, having 422 brake horsepower
each. With this power. she could auise
at 16 knots.
Cambrloas, her original name, was
designed by Cox and Stevens of New
York and built by Pusey and Jones of
Wilmington, Del. in 1930. When Earle F.
Halliburton, a member of the Newport
Harbor Yacht Club, acquired the yacht,
her name was changed to Vt.da, the
name of bis daughter. Vida was regis-

next door t.o him is White Mountain, a
gargantuan steer weighing in at 3,450
pounds and 6-feet 8-inches tall, the
equivalent of 10,000 hamburgers on the
hoof.
Then there's the pig races. The
Alaskan Ricing Pigs to be ~xact. The
pigs are .always there each year but I
hadn't'ever seen this event in person so
I joined about JOO or so spectators last
week for the •pork chop showdown.·
The races are a squeal with lots of
goofy references to hogs such as this lit-
Ue phrase •rain or swine the sow must
go on• and the invitation to take your
•pigture• with one of the racers -my
favorite of whom was Sow Capone.
They even have a Web site,

After the pig races, it's time to go get

I don't mean no garden burgers or

This is the fair, where folks wear

while listening to the sweet strains of
"Home on the Range.·
This is where a lady who looks like
my grand.ma can walk by a row of beef
roasts turning on a barbecue spit and
shout "Let's grab one of those suckers

So I got my "healthy" portions for
lunch. A barbecue beef sandwich, an
order ol Australian batter fried potatoes
and a lemonade.
I must warn you here, this la no
cheap meal. The aforementioned grub
set me back $13.75.
. But It tasted good and the good~
is you really don't need to eat afterward
for a couple days. ..,
. still, if you don't want to pay these
pnces, the peopJe at the gate assured
me that families are welcome to bring a
sack lunch, just no cans or bottles.
Speaking of families, the fair really is
a nice place tor them, espedaDy during
the week when crowds are much
lighter. Por young kids there are ~
ZOOI, elephant ~ ari:Adiil, face
painting and Kidland, a l8ction Of rides·

Por adults there's the House ot BreWI,
the Footsie Wootsie foot ~e. psy-

Yes, I have to admit that the fair now
allures me with its hometown, corny

And like many folks who visit. I
alw~~ look forward to next year.

On a different note, I caught the live
broadcast last Tuesday of the El Toro
debate on KCRW radio station 89.9 FM
from the Barclay Theater at UCI.
For the most part, I thought it was a
good exchange and lots of good infor-
mation.,.
But tHe pGrt that disturbed me, and
I'm sure I'm not alone, was the lack of
decorum on the part of some in the
audience -on both sides of the
debate, mind you.
There were hisses and sarcastic
laughter and shouts of •liar• and other
insults. While it's probably not surpris-
ing that this heated battle has dete rio-
rated into a school yard shoving match,
it is disappointing nonetheless.
How can we expect our young peo-
ple to act in a respectful and courteous
manner when they have examples of
adults acting so foolishly?
Whatever happened to the idea that
we can have honest disagreements in
opinion?
U the actions and comments of that
crowd for the radio broadcast are any
indication of what the future beholds
for the debate of th.ls land, then we all
have a long road ahead.

From basketball to bodybuilding to golf,
strongman is still making a difference.
Richard Dunn
OAllY PILOT
J ohn Carrido was
never blessed with
tremendous height,
•Even players on the other team

one. The parents go bananas. They
•
ask. 'How do you do it?' • •
Instead of a cookie, it's praise.
but he's a giant among men.
A Cormer Mr. California
bodybuilder, Canido, who also
achieved a level of greatness in
basketball and golf with a frame
·or 5-foot-4, is changing the world
again.
First, Carrido introduced
groundbreaking material in •The
Fitness Approach to Power Golf,• a
popular book and video since 1996.
Now, as coach of his 8-yeax-old
daughter's soccer team, Carrldo Is
trying to make the world a better
place.
The Luke Davis-coached
Carrido, an All-CIF Southern
Section basketball guard for
Estancia High and a
contributing member of
Orange Coast College's
1979 state championship
team under Coach 'nmdy
Cillis, bas seen the
television news footage of
parents fighting at youth
sporting events, and, as
he should be, is appalled.
Instead ot a chocolate bar, lfs a
hug. Food-reward usodation is
trouble, Canido believes.
•Parents don't reward them by
hugging and kissing us, but they
reward us by feeding us, like we're
some damn whale at Sea World,"
he said.
Canido, the oldest of 14 kids
produced by bis father, the late
Lewis callejo, helped raise eight
siblings, then five more half
brothers and sisters were added to
the clan growing up' in Costa
Mesa.
His father helped downtrod~
World Wax II veterans with clotb1ng
and food. showing his c:bildren
how they can always give more.
Further, in Carrtdo's
line of work, bodies are a
temple and should be
treated as such. Instead of
•vou talk about having
an idol. and how parents
am make you tb.1nk that
you can do anything,•
Carrido said. •that's how I
made it in basketball and
bodybuilding and as a
business penon. That's
my hero -my father. You
hear that 10 many times in
spol1s, but parents don't
realize bow Important John Cantdo their role ls. And tf you
treats and goodies, he rewards the
AYSO kids with trophies and
praise.
•Are you ki<t'1tng me? When I
busted my butt tpr hours and hours
and hours in the gym (as a
bodybuilder), that's what motivated
me," said Carri.do, a former Mr.
California and Mr. Orange County,
and. in 1986, a Mr. America
top-three finalist.
AJJ a third sport. Canido became
a 6-handicap golfer in less than
three years -showing how proper
fitness and stretching can increase
one's length off the tee and overall
gaine. •
But, for Canido, who conducts

said Cenido, who won the Mr.
