Barely a week into his new

some drastic changes.
He's moved the desk in his

Don Webb kept about 20

about his new job, it becomes

"I've ne ver wanted a job

He's wanted it for about 13

Ben Nolan, who was public
works director at the time.
asked Badum what he
expected to do five years later.
"I expect to have your

telling Nolan.
It took a little longer than
that, but Badum began work-
ing toward his goal soon after
he took the job in Newport

He enrolled in a master's

his dream job.
"My wife sacrificed a lot."
he said, adding that the cou-

born around the same time.
His education taken care
off, Badum also decided to
gain leadership experience
elsewhere.
In 1995, be became Seal

their radar screen.

U nexpected sounds come out of 10-

the time.
Kistler, a Costa Mesa resident who
performs around the community three or four
times a week in the summer, sings the blues in
a deep, full voice that regularly surprises adults.
11She has a growl and a very big voice that
you never bear in 10-year-olds, • said KisUer's.
mother, lami Jo. •When she sings, it's so big
and so powerful, and I just know she feels it.
The crowd 1S always saying, 'Look at that big
voice coming out of that little girl!'•
When she's not having singing, dancing, gui-
tar and piano lessons, Brandi.Jo is keeping busy
this summer performing at numerous locations,
including niangle Square, El Torlto and at the
Costa Mesa Market Place, where she and a
friend, 12-year-old Evan Saucedo, will perform
a show called •Bubble Gum" in August.
She's won a pilot episode of the •Gong
Show," with Tom Arnold, and performed with
B-Real, a member of the rap group Cypress
Hill, on a local television news program.
But right now, she's looking forward to her
next performance at 5 p.m. today on the
Meadows Stage at the Orange County Pair.
•rm going to be singing dose by, so every-

Brandi!o, smiling. •1 like people to watch me
sing, and I like to see people enjoying me. I
like to make people cry.• ~
Brand.Uc said it has always been her dream
to be a singer.
•Whenever I sing, I know it is what I want
to do,• she said. "I sing every day. I love to
sing for other people, to sing for myself and to
sing for God. I like getting into a song. When I
sing, I feel like I 8JtJ. in the song.•
She began singing when she was 4, but
Brand.Uo said she didn't decide she wanted to
be a singer until she was 6.
Her love of blues didn't hit her until one of
her mom's friends introduced her to Etta James.
"I just loved Etta James the minute I saw
her," BrandiJo said. •1 had never heard blues
before, and I just started liking it. I also like
pop, which is piore bopplty, but with blues you
can just feel it better. I can't imagine ever not
wanting to sing."
When Tami Jo Kistler heard her daughter
sing "Fame,• a song she learned when she
was 6, she knew she could make it as a singer
but has never forced her in that direction.
"I used to sing at weddings, and she could
kick my butt," <She said. •she sang and I saw
the reaction. You could see her whole body

BrandiJo's voice is remarkable.

I 've been going to the Orange
County Fair since I was 3 months
old, but I never got to drive my
own car around inside the fair-
grounds until this month. My
younger daughter entered her
Kahlua truffles into competition, and
I delivered the finished product. As
luck would have it, she was the divi-
sion winner, upholding the family
tradition of tak-
ing home the
prize.
lo the late
1940s, my father
decided that he
wanted a ranch
'and went to
Buena Park to
complete his
mission. A ranch
needs a cow, so
my older sister
got one and was
part of the

ers in those days. Her first cow, Nan-
cy, followed her around like a well-
bebaved dog, so she took sweep-
stakes in the showmanship division
on her first try.
By the time I was born, we had a
small collection of cows that all loved
to go to the fair. No cow wanted to
be left behind, whether it was her
tum to be shown or not. So, my fami-
ly bad to get special permission to
take the extras along so they wouldn't
break out of their pen at home and
try to get to the fair on their own.
There were some wild nights when
the family came back from the fair
all the way out in Costa Mesa to
search for the cows that were on
their own •incredible journey• to the
fair.
They knew it was fair time
because the family was engaged in
preening the cows, which consisted
of shampooing them, brushing their
coats, braiding their tails, shining up
the udder and sanding and waxing
their horns and hooves. One time, my
grandma put too much bluing in the
rinse water and the cows were blue
for a few days.
There weren't many city folks in
Orange County in those days, but
those who came to the fair had a fair
degree of misconceptions about cows.
1bey thought bovines with horns
were automatically bulls. So, when I
was placed on some big, homed
heifers to take a nap as a toddler,
someone would shout in tenor that 1
was about to be killed by the bulls.
Even the bull we had was nice to
me. Only the sheep and the parrot
picked me for their terrorist tactics.
Buttons, the sheep, was more or less
quiet about her evil ways, but the
parrot would roar with laughter
every time she trapped me. Neither
of them got to go to tbe fair.
When I was 3, 1 was too young to
show my cow myself, but Gay Ann (I
named her after me) won a blue rib-
bOn with tny sister's help. When I got
older, I won blue ribbons for my
aewtng entries and my newspaper

RentlJl,g cove cottages
sounds like dream
This is regarding Thny Dodero's
column on Crystal Cove (•Pinally,
it's time to start mnk;ing those
Crystal Cove reservations,• July 9.
It and he makes me sick. 1 hap-
pen to be one of those •cottage
dwellers." Our •cottage• was orig-
inally purchased by my aunt in
the 1940s. At that time, anyone
could have purchased a cottage. I
bet if your family bad bought one,
you would be talking out of the
other side of your mouth right
now. I have pictures of me, my
cbildrena.ndmygrandsonas
newborns on the Cove's beautiful
beach.
I highly resent his acting as if
we were squatters. We paid plenty
to be able to enjoy what bad been
in our family for generations. The
state received about $550,000 per
year rent from the ocwe •squat-
ters,• which pak1 the property tax-
es. We, as •squatters,• also main-
tained the cove's roads, grounds
and houses until the state put so
many restrictions on us maintain-
ing our cottages, it almost made it
impossible to do anything.
Who does be think is going to
start paying the taxes and mainte-
nance now?
By the way, since the state
bought the land, the public has
had access to the beach. The state
even made a new parking lot for
those who wish to visit the cove.
If he thinks for one minute that
the state is going to rent out tbe
cottage for as little as $100 per
night he must be dreaming. The
state already had six cottages that
they boarded up and never main-
tained. What makeS him think
they will try to maint.ain all 46 cot-
tages now, or even a few for that
matter? That will never happen.
Dodero wants a •camp-
ground?" That's a laugh. U the
state wanted to make a camp-
ground. then why didn't they
make one on the bluff, whee they
have a day-use-only c.amp now.
There is a lot of room there -
even for motor homes -and easy
access to the beach.
Don't bold your breath when it
comes to having •your turn• to
stay there. Dodero will be too old
to enjoy anything by then.
By the way, why did it take him
eight years to go back and look at
that beauWul place we called par-
adise?

SEAN HIUEfl I OAlY PILOT
Members of Patrlda Donahue's family enjoy Fourth of July at their former cottage at Crystal Co"Ve.
New general plan
should come first
There is a simplE:, quick and
inexpensive method of avoiding
Bryon de Arak.al's prospective
(Between the Llnes, •failure to
yield foreshadows nasty Koll-
Greenlight pileup,• July 18).
The solution is for the Qty
Council to deny or postpone the
pending Koll application until the
voters have approved the city's
new general plan, now making
rapid steps toward completion.
This would avoid the expense and
inconvenience of a Greenligbt
eledion, the controversy swround-
ing it and a possible legal chal-
lenge.
It would seem that any politi-
cian sensitive to residents' con-
cerns, and with confidence in the
system. would never let a devel-
oper expand its current entitle-
ments by 15 times. Koll should not
be permitted to add t,700 cars per
day, in perpetuity, to Newport
Beach traffic unW its plans comply
with the standards of the new
general plan.
Currently. two council mem-
ben;, John Heffernan and Gary
Proctor, have supported this posi-
tion. Cotmdlman Steve Bromberg
bas stated the voters should make
the decision on this project. Four
council memben; have approved
the project as meritorious. The
cmmcil will make a finaJ vote
[today).
Residents may wish to follow
this vote closely. 1Wo c:ouncil mem-
bers, Gary Adams and Tod Ridge-
way, are up for reelection. What
better opportunity could there be
for determining who they truly
represent than this vote? Despite
the Greenlight mandate, is it still
business as usual at City Hall?
However, deferring approval of
the Koll project would not be a
pro-Greenlight vote. It would
instead be a vote for the system,
allowing the project to be subject
to new land planning rules to
which all should adhere.

Steel criminal case
should be thrown out
This is regarding •Judge tosses
out Steel civil case• (July 12).
Judge Tilierry Patrick Colaw
should be commended for his wise
decision lo throwing out the civil
lawsuit against Costa Mesa Coun-
cilman Chris Steel made by resi-
dent Michael Szkaradek.
This is the type of frivolous, abu-
sive and vindictive lawsuit that
wastes taxpayer money, ties up and
dogs the courts from more impor-
tant issues and wastes the time and
money of the defendant. Steel.
• Regarding resident Richard
Noack signing for his wife, this is
hardly a heinous crime against
mankind. If this is a punishable
offense then there is hardly a mar-
ried man or woman alive in Costa
Mesa or Newport Beach that has
not committed a felony and we all
could discuss this matter while in
jail together. The right of man and
wife to be recognized as one is
one of our few remaining liberties.
• ~egarding Steel signing for a
legally blind woman. we should
all thank him for his sensitivity. If
everyone looked out for the blind
and disabled, that would make us
c:ollectively an even better com-

not burted.
• Regarding the plaintiff, at

Thank you for a small favor.
Although Steel still faces crimi-

While you make some salient points, and
appear to come down solidly on the side of the
good folks ot the Greeolight Committee, your
judgment that they should have beeD more
involved in the approval pooess with the City

gin.
;.. the~ Newport Beecb voters are aware, the t Initiative grew out ol the

the fad we do not believe they're serving us,
but are instead serving the developers. Cvil
servants and elected otficials of Newport

Gn!enlight spokesman Phil Arst and the
Greenlight Committee are all volunteers, giv-
ing countless hows of their time to be of ser-
vice to our community.
By the vote last November, lt is obvious
they're doing a very good job of that Nowhere
that I've read does it state the Greenlight Com-

pa.rt ot the plann1ng or execution of the dty

that, egam. Gleenlighl committee members,
well~ by Arst. must 5tep forward and~ cowitJea more hours ol volunteer

The revenue gene.rated to the dty by ot6oe
