sents a complex challenge to
the pollution-fighters who hope
to combat it.
Where a sewage spill can
often be fixed with a simple
repair to a broken line, the
exact sources of runoff can be
difficult to determine. Testing a
body of water for bacteria can
show whether the water vio-

what sort of pollution is causing
the problem.
High scores on a bacteria
test don't necessarily mean that
the water is unsafe, Kiff noted.
"Maybe it's just from Joe

COSTA MESA -While
the three-day conditioning

ball coach Jeny Howell says
there is a big difference from spring practice.
•1t•s much more intense than spring,
because you have a game plan,• said Howell,
who will endure the final day of helmets, T-
shirts and shorts today with his 68 varsity and
junior varsity athletes.
·we try to do as much conditioning as we
can, without hurting the kids. But it's not a lot
more than we'd normally do.•
In matters of football, Howell said he and
his staff will install the things they plan to run
against Saddleback in the regular-season
opener, Sept. 7.
They'll get a chance to polish up in a Sept.

In addition to the annual personnel shake-

change.
Mike Crowe, a former Mustang quarter-

a former head coach at the schooL has shifted

gover on last year's 24· 1 frosh/soph team which
won the prestigious Chargers Cup.
•even though we only have one return-
ing .tarter,• Vargas said, ·all the guys
experienced the finals in some aspect.
I'm sure they know what it's like to be in
the finals, and they want to go back. I
don't think being young will hurt us."
1\vo juniors, Marcello Pantuliano and
Michael March, move into the starting
lineup. March was one of the top scorers
for Cd.M's 18-and-under team this sum-
mer. Pantuliano is one of CdM's top
defenders,· and, accorcling to Vargas, •a
smart player.•
•Mustangs' boys water polo program begins
anew with a n e w coach a nd a new lineup.
Sophomore Artie Dorr rounds out the
Sea Kings' starting lineup. As a fresh-
man, Dorr impressed Vargas enough to
see some action on the varsity team. He
is a tough two-meter player, but Vargas
envisions a rotating lineup with Dorr,
Bowlus, March and Cuyler handling the
two-meter spot.
"We'll have four guys setting for us,
"be said, "and that will make it tough on
the other teams.•
Speedy junior Bobby Messenger ts
another weapon Vargas could bring off
the bench, and sophomore John Martn's
potential land~d him on the varsity
squad. Junior Brandon Powers and ·
sophomore John Money are more
options for Vargas.
In goal, Kim is one of CdM's fastest
swimmers. He was the only CdM indi·
vidual to advance out of the CIF boys
swim preliminanes last season, qualify-
ing in the consolation finals for the 200
individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
"Sherwin's real fast," Vargas said. ~1
think a fast goalie lS important."
But Kim could be pushed by sopho·
more Beau Stockstill, the starter on last
year's frosh/soph team.
"I'm real confident about both my
goalies. J think they'll get some serious
competition from each other."
Vargas is excited about the slew of tal·
ent at bis disposal. But he won't get a
chance to guide this team until he gets
back on Oct. 7 from the Olympic Games
in Sydney, Australia as the coach of the
U.S. national team.
Assistants Marc Hunt, Tim Salvino
and Aaron Chaney dre expected to fill
the void-OllW then.
CdM went undefeated in the Paafic
Coast League last year, but Vargas refus-
es to say that another league title is all
but wrapped up.
•Laguna Beach had a great summer,•
he said, "so it's going to be tough gomg
through league.•
He also cites Los Alamitos and Servile
as potential roadblocks to a ClF title. But
if bis Sea Kings play the way Vargas
believes they can, last year's accomplish-
ments are within range.
"They have a potential to be win-
ners,• he said. "They're a deeper team
than last year. But you can't knock a CIF
champion."

going. So Costa Mesa boys
water polo is still alive and
kicking.
"J let them know about the

what the program 1s at
Mesa,· Coach Chris Avitia,
entering his first season at the-
helm, said. "But you've got to
build to get into that position
and hopefully we'll reach that
someday.•
The majority of Costa
Mesa's players don't have
water polo expenence and it's
up to Avitia, who was the
goalie on Mesa's 1992 CIF
title team and '93 runner-up,
to mold this group.
•We have a lot to learn and
not a lot of expenence, • Avt-

Avitia does have two var-

inducting Mike Whifma.n. A
senior entering his fourth

was one of the Mustangs' top

undisputed leader of th1s

how invaluable Whib'nan is

"He's so much help.• Avi·
tia said. "He's giving the other
players a lot of help. He's an

the other returner.
"He's a really good, qwck
player, and he's got a good
shot,· Avitia said. ·He 's

think he'll unprove from last

Behind those two, fresh-
man Brian Tipton is the only
familiar face for Avttia. The
younger brother of former
Mesa poloist Matt Tipton, Bn-
an played under Aviba three
years ago when he coached
an t t-and-under team. Avilla
will try to mold him mto
Mesa's future goalie.
"He's learning fast.• Aviba
said. "He's young, so I can
work with him for four years.
We need a good defense wi\h
a young team."
Junior Steven Thomas
played on Mesa's frosh/soph
team last year, and that
makes him valuable. Fresh-
man Dennis Atkins and
sophomores Matt Grubls1ch,
John Santos. Steven Reyes,
Kevin Neppl and Robert
Rodnguez, are new to the
high school water polo expe·
rience.
With so many green play-

team will take some lwnps

losses will be a learrung item

they'll learn sometlung from
