Unlike cruising in Newport Harbor and most places in Southern California, one must prepare very carefully for a trip in these areas, which have many hazards not found in Newport. I can guarantee that in the North- west. boaters do not want to be caught cruising without a chart in band that shows submerged rocks nor do you want to auise at night in the paaages with numerous floating logs. 11dal changes of up to 18 feet aeate swift rapids in many JWroWS and make headway difficult for slow-moving vessels. I see more fuel spilled at my local gas station. In addition, the fuel docks and the harbor depart- ment are the two first places a visiting boater will make contact u Newport's unoffi- cial ambessadon, so think about that when you visit another distant harbor. Which is kind of what a move like that would do. In fact as one high-placed Newport official said confi- dentially, "I'd rather have a Chris Cox straddling the fence than Chris Cox work- ing against me: So, not having much luck with local officials, I tried to reach the congressmen for their thoughts. After a phone call and an early morning surf trek to one of Rohrabacher's favorite beach hangouts, I failed to get ahold of the Surfing Con- gressman. But Co.x, reached by phone in Washington last week, insisted that having two members of Congress represent Newport Beach is a good thing, not a bad one. •Anaheim actually has four representatives in Con· gress, •Cox said, noting that he, Gary Miller, Ed Royce Md Lorett.a Sanchez all rep- resent portions of that city. •What we have found is it's far easier to get the job done for Anaheim,• he said. ·we're four votes for these things and though some- times we have to lean harder on one or another, it's defi- nitely benefited Anaheim to have a larger delegation in Congress." Still, Cox points out that before redistricting in the 1990s, he represented the ,mtire city, but despite the change, bis work on behalf of bis hometown continues to be strong. He cites the federal sup- port for shoreline restoration and anti-beach erosion pro- jects, ongoing impro~ents to the Back ~y and dredg- ing, equaling about $4.7 mil- lion for environmental sup- port for the city. He notes that he fights for a continued moratorium on offshore oil drilling and has secured a grant for the New- port Beach Police Depart- ment. Indeed, Coundlman Den- nis O'Neil said~ im't swe that in Newport Beach m Toro is •the issue" anymore, anyway. I don't have to tell you how wrong we were. Greenlight forces zeroed in on the Dunes project and made it the whipping boy for the evil forces of develop- ment that they alleged were ruining the town. The plan was put in moth- balls just before November's election and most thought then that the move spelled doom for any hotel or resort there. Greenlight of course sailed to victory, and now we have learned that the Evans family, proprietors of the Dunes since the early 1970s, has put the resort up for sale. What's too bad is that the Evans family and 1lm and Annie Quinn got dragged into the muck that floated about the Greenligbt debate. They are good people who have done good things for the community and no matter how anyone feels about overdevelopment or traffic, that fact should never be lost.
