Museum curator dedicated to the arts
• Irene Hofmann, who is coming to work at the
Orange County Museum of Art, believes in the
importance of her role in the art world.
Young O\ang
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH -
Irene Hofmann once toyed with
the question most undergrad·
uates ask later, if not sooner:
What in the world do you do
with a degree in (fill in the
blank)?
In Hofmann's case, it was
art history-an Wldergraduate
and graduate educatioo in sulr
jects including art and anti.aft,
movements such as dada and
surrealism, art theory and art
criticism.
"What do you do with it
other than perhaps teach?. said
Hofmann, who has been
named the new curator for the
Orange County Museum of
Art's contemporary art coDec:·
tion. "It really wasn't obvious to
me."
Michigan artist Robert
Andersen, who has worked
with Hofmann, explains the
answer.
"You
can have
the great·
est artists
working,
but if they
don't have
a curator
who's
going to
help con·
textualize Irene Hofmann the' work,
provide a
venue, connect to audiences,
that wen might go for naught..
Andersen said
Ten years ago, Hofmann
dedicated her life to getting art
on walls.
The 31·year-old California
native, who is a curator at the
Cranbrook Art Museum in
Michigan, will start her posi·
tion at the Newport Beach
museum in early October.
•One of my favorite parts
(of being a curator) is the rela·
tionships with artists that l
fmn.. Hofmann said .HelPng
realize an exhfbttion. the kind
of impact an exhibition can
have on an artist's career -
that's all incredibly satisfying
and exdting. •
She also shares that impact
with museum visitors tl\rough
talks, lectures and the exhibits
themselves. Hofmann has sp<>-
.ken at the Cranbrook muse·
um. as well as at The Art
Institute of Chicago and at the
Walker Art Center · in
Minneapolis, both venues
where she bas worked.
Hofmann's credits include
serving as teaching assistant at
the School of the Art Institute in
Illinois; an internship at the
Museum of Contemporary Art,
also in Illinois: and a stint at the
New Museum of
Contemporary Art in New
York, where she interned 10
years ago for museum founder
Marcia Tucker.
The job wasn't glamorous
-she helped Tucker organize
the office, work out budgets
and communicate with artists
-but the brief bottorn~f·the·
ladder peek lnlo curatorship
started Hohnann's career.
Today. one of her favorite
genres to work with is art with
video involved. Her current
exhibit at the Cranbrook ~
um is of video work by artist
liiigo MangJano-Ovalle, which
will open in September.
•rm very interested in artists
that, in general, address social
issues, political issues, where
there's really quite a bit of con·
tent in the work once you get
beyond the aesthetics of the
piece," Hofmann said.
She cwated Andersen's
first exhibit for this reason.
His was an eight·scree n
projection piece called
"MotelMovies24Hours• that
showed events happening in
the different rooms of a shady
motel all at once.
Andersen compares his
relationship with Hofmann and
art in general to a ooin, because
it has two sides. On one side
are the artist and the work; on
the other are the curators, art
writers and art critics who bring
art to the public.
"Really, the m1ss1on
between the artist and the
CW"ator are really very similar, tt

Newport Beach library to buy Spanish books
• A.mount of money

Mathis Winkler
DAILY PILOT
NEWPORT BEACH
C ustomers of the Newport
Beach Central library will soon
be able to read "Oen Aftos de
Soledad" instead of •One
Hundred Years of Solitude"
because library officials have
set aside about $25,000 to build
a Spanish book collection.
Library leaders said they
decided to buy books in
spa.nm after repeated requests
from patrons.
"I think it's a great idea,"
said Pabick Ba.rtolic, who chairs
the library's board of trustees.
"We've talked about it
throughout the duration of our
boa.rd and finally felt in a posi-
tion to do something about it.·
With an overall budget for
library materials of $581,264,
Bartolic noted that the alloca·
tion for Spanish books wasn't
very large.
"We're not trying to com·
pete with a university collec·
lion• of foreign language
books, he said. •we're serving
people at a community level.•
Newport Beach itself has a
relatively small Latino popu-
lation-about 4.7%, according
to the 2000 census. But Bartolic
said the library also serves
many residents in other cities in
Orange County, which has a
much larger Latino population.
Library officials also expect
that nonnative speakers of the
language will check out
Spanish books as well.
For now, Spanish will be the
only foreign language that's
represented in the book col-
lection, Bartolic said. But if it
proves successful, others, such
as German, French and Farsi,
might be added in the future,
he added.

Beach warning
posted in Newport
The Orange County Health
Care Agency has posted warn-
ing signs at two Newport
Beach locations.
Warnings to swimmers and
others who use the beaches
were announced for Harbor
Patrol beach and Rhine
Channel about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
There is also a posted warn-
ing at the Newport Dunes, 300
feet up the north side of the
pedestrian bridge and 300 feet
on the east side of the swim
area.
The agency detected higher
than acceptable levels of bac-
teria, which usually come from
animal waste found in urban
runoff, in the waters. The test
results triggered the postings.
The posting does not close
the beaches, only warns those
who use them about the dan-
gers of the bacterial contami-
nation.

I've never paid much

But since 80 carries freight

Somewhere in our 70s, we
begin to read obituaries, not

W ell. it's AugUst
and once
again the
Orange
County Fair has run its
course. Unlike some years
tn the tab's history, though,
organizers have many fig-
ures of which to boast.
First, admission revenue
rose 34 %, about $1 million
more than last year, to about
$3.4 million. Much of it has
to do with a $1 inaea.se in
admission prices, but it can
also be attributed to a 12%
increase in paid admlstrions.
Second, total attendance
was at an all-time high at
843,347, besting last year's
· record by about 35,000 fair-
goers.
Lastly, of that grand total
attending the fair, only 52
people were arrested. That's
down significantly from 145
the year before. ""
Fair officials attributed
the dramatic reduction in
atme to an increase in visi-
bility of the Orange County
SherUf's Department
deputies and a better coop-
eration between deputies
and fair officials.
Perhaps some of the fig-
ures shouldn't be a surprise
considering the last year's
fair, which swpassed its pre-
decessor by more than
84,000 in attendance. Also,
the fair's operating budget
was $1 .8 million larger this
year.
Whatever the case, fair
officials were at the top of
their game this year, provid-
ing safety and great enter-
tainment from Mister Chub-
by Checker to country star
Billy Ray Cyrus to the •1
Love Lucy" exhibit to 51
rides, including the La
Grande Wheel.
This year's success aside,
it would appear the fair ~
growing and that organizers
are managing to do so in a
gradual. yet still safe, man-
ner. This year's event
received far more media
attention than usual
Still, this is a large event
that attracts large aowds
and will continue to do so.
No one should be too sur-
prised if next year's fair tops
this year's aaoss the board.
.This 109th event should
be the benchmark that all
future fairs should strive to
repeat. if not surpass.
Congratulations, and
we'll see you a1:l next year.

get away from them, we gave our

running to the other side of the park
where the playground is, and dozens
of squirrels came aft.er us wanting the

So, we decided that we wouldn't

the constant feeding by people to the

them so aggressive that it isn't even

of the original points from th~ first film, such &S that in
some ways the apes are
more civilized than humans.
It also has characteristically
dramatic special effects and

But jt doesn't offer a better

Finally, while Roth's acting

'Popeye' charms kids With spinach and corn

of •Popeye" is in residence
through Aug. 12.
. It may be a kids' show, b\U Newport's •Popeye• is a
full-blown production with a
musical score, colorful cos-
lu,!nes and some truly outra-
geous comedy -with a
wink or two toward the
adults in the audience who
will pick up on some of the
unscripted asides. And there
are plenty of these, includ-
ing one actor's signatwe
liqe from his last appear-
ance at the center ("I could
cry") and a catch phrase
from a popular TV quiz
show. ("You are the weakest

Director Terri Miller

of them well shy of voting a~e, if not puberty -and

right out of the comic pages.
Slight of statwe, with a
gravely voice and an authen-
tic giggle, Gillies brings the
sailor man to We splendidly.
It's obvious he's done copious
research into "Popeye• car-
toons.
His lady love, Olive Oyl, is
rail-thin and slightly homely
in the comic pages, factors
which Emihlie Wells fortu-
nately does not possess in
her delicious interpretation.
She also brings a pleasing
singing voice to the proceed-
ings.
Somewhere between the
comics and the stage, Pop-
eye's adversary Bluto has
become Brutus. Never mind,
it's the same big, dumb
roughneck trying to make
time with Olive, and Jack
Millis plays this ham.my lug
to the hilt, often pausing in
his pea-brained villainy to
bounce a quip off the audi·
ence. Who would recognize
the director of some pretty
serious theater in this char-
acterization?
Speaking of serious the-
ater, Teri Ciranna may be a
graduate of London's Royal
Academy of Dramatic Art,
Popeye (John GUUes) prepares to separate Brutus (Jack Millis) from OUve Oyl (Emlhlle Wells) in the children'• musi-
cal "Popeye" at the Newport Theatre Arts Center.
but she plays the villainous
Sea Hag for all the cackling
comedy the role is worth.
Virtually unrecognizable
behind an extended hook
nose, Ciranna excels as the
brains of the treacherous
twosome.
And what would a Popeye
show be without Wimpy?
The rotund, perennially pen-
niless hamburger zealot is
given a hilarious interpreta-
tion by Stan Wlasick, com-
plete with a "fat suit" that
rivals the Goodyear blimp.
Wlasick handles the comic
relief with alacrity, dodging a
cluster of Statue of Liberty
tourists who resemble a
coterie of Clara Pellers,
shouting "Where's the beef?"
(one sendup Schmidt inex-
plicably missed in her script
doctoring).
These tourists, the only
other adults in the show, are
a colorful lot and nicely char-
acterized. The balance of the
cast consists of 18 children

Director Schmidt and her
husband, Dick, proprietors of
16th Street Design, have
fashioned a brightly colored,
multilevel setting that works
exceptionally well. Costume
designer Lyn Frenzel has
combined with parents of the
castmemberstocomeup
with some beautifully hued
outfits. The show is virtually
awash in color.
"Popeye" may not be
today's hottest cartoon char-
acter, but the musical stage
incarnation is truly a delight
at the Newport Theatre Arts
Center. And you don't have
to be a kid to enjoy it.

NORWALK-After standing on the sideline and
watching the offensive unit of the Los Angeles
County All-Stars march down the field Saturday
night in the first L.A. County-Orange County
High School Football All-Star Game at Cerritos
College, Chris Manderino of Newport Harbor
High decided to do something about it.
Mandarino, the staiting tailback for La Habra
Coach Prank Ma:zzotta's Orange County All-Stan,
nudged on the coach's shirt in the first half and
said, "I can really help out on defense."
So Manderino, the All-Star team's leading
rusher with 50 yards on 11 cahies, played
defensive end late in the first half and remained
there throughout inost of the second half ln a 7-0
victory for L.A. Cowity.
Manderino, voted the Orange County MVP
in the game before an estimated 1,000 fans, was
one of four Sailors in the inaugural contest. along
with linebacker Andy Rankin. offensive lineman
Scott Lopez and defensive lineman Nick
Moghaddam.
On one defensive stop, Ran.kin aod Manderlno
combined to knock LA County quarterback Rick
Meyer of La Mirada out of the game in the second
half.
·(Rankin) did really well,• said Manderino,
who played linebacker at Newport Harbor and
practiced some on defense prior to the all-star
game, but never at defensive end.
"I just wanted to get in the ballgame and start
playing," added Manderino, who, by the fourth
quarter, was calling defensive plays for Mazzotta's
team.
With all four Tars in the starting lineup, it was
business as usual for Manderino, whose longest
carry (15 yards) came in the second half and
almost broke a 60-yarder for a touchdown, before
getting bis ankle Jarred from behind.
•Scott Lopez did a really good Job of blocking
for me,• Manderino said. ·Thars why I was able
to do so well on offense.•
The L.A. County All-Stars 8cored the game's
only touchdown on a 17-yard pass play from Los
Altos quarterback Felipe Aguilar to Downey's
Justin Phinisee with 4:54 left in the second quarter.
Phl.nisee was voted the L.A. County MVP.
Manderino, who reports next week to training
camp at UC Berkeley, where he'll be a walk-on
player for the Golden Bears, also played for the
South ln the ,Orange County All-Star Game earlier
this month at Orange Coast College.
Tu start the L.A. ColDlty-Orange County game,
Orange County's offense came out in a shotgun
formation. but. following a seven-minute delay in
the action, the team was informed that because of
•certain rules.of the All-Star game,• it could not
operate o ut of the shotgun.
•There was a big discrepancy,• said
Mandertno, who added that Orange County
offensive players were bumping into each other
following the ruling, which. apparently, nobody
from Orange County knew about because the
team spent an entire week practiclng out of the
shotgun.
At halftime, Manderino spoke up and
influenced a change in the offense to an I
formation, which proved successful. "That turned
things around,• said Manderino, the only player
on the team to go both ways.
The Newport-Mesa District Most Valuable
Player and CIF Southern Section Division VI
Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, Manderino
scored a district-record 31 touchdowns last season
for Coach Jeff Brinkley's Tars.
