City leaders hope the

NEWPORT BEACH -A study to develop effective
methods of testing the waters of Upper Newport Bay
has become a source of disagreement m recent weeks,
with some members of the committee that worked on
the study arguing that the scientibc basis has received
insufficient independent review.
The Newport Bay Health Risk Assessment Study-
a collaboration between the Irvine Ranch Water Dlstnct.
Orange County, Newport Beach. other abes and the
Irvine Co. -is looking at ways of determirung whether
bay water contamination poses a threat to humans.
l.J.ke a similar project by the city of Newport Beach,
the study aims to address one of the key problems in
dealing with water-borne health threats: the difficulty
of determining whether hwnan viruses, which are the
things that usually make people sick when they go in
polluted water, are present in the bay.
The study proposes to deal with ttus problem by
hunting for a virus called F+phage, which infects bac·
teria and is often found in sewer lines.
Searching for thiS virus, said Ken Thompson. dire<t-
tor of water quality for the Irvine Ranch Water Di.strlct,
should be a relatively effective and inexpensive way of
finding out whether viruses are present -or whether
the water is dean.
•The key is to get good science and make sure we're
not building treatment facilities where they're not
needed.· he said.
But Jack Skinner, a Newport Beach physician and
water quality advocate who serves as an ex officio
member of the study's health advisory committee, said
he has concerns about the scientific va.lidlty of using
F+phage as an indicator of human vuuses.
"You can have a lot of phage and no viruses, and
you can have no phage and viruses coming down (from
the watershed), so the problem is that there isn't an
exact correlation between one and the other,• be said.
The question of F+phage's utility as an virus indica-
tor, both sides agree, is a complex scientific issue. But
Skinner also is concerned about what he called a Jack
of independent review of the science used in the study.
"Primary oversight of the project.• Skinner wrote in a
recent letter to the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality
Control Board, •appears to be performed by ... entlties
that I believe have a vested interest in the outcome.•

In addition to the
record-setting relay on the '88
CIF title team, the Sea Kings
received individual CIF
championship perfonnances-
from Kerr in the 200 (24. 71) and
400 (57.04), while distance
runner Leslie Cashion, long
jumper and triple jumper Sandy
Lucas, and hurdlers Jill stint as CdM's girls

of the county's all-time baton
squads, the core of a classic
period in CdM track and field.
That year, the Sea Kings were
the first girls track team in
district annals to win a CIF
championship. Kaczynski, however, ls best
known as a track guru, having
rebuilt the CdM girls team
beginning in 1983, and, from
1987 to '90, going undefeated in
Sea View League dual meets.
The Sea Kings were 1-6 in
dual meets in '83, Kaczynski's
first year as head coach, then
moderately improved to 2-5 the
following year. •
But, dwing the ensuing fall.
the Class of 1988 showed up as

in the spring of '85, the Sea
Kings went 5'2, 6-1, 7-0 and 7-0
in league dual meets, including
the unforgettable CF aown in

Corona del Mar also went 1-0
in dual meets in 1989 and '90,
then Kaczymki exited OD top,
desiring to spend more time with

After the 1990 campaign,

ANAHEIM -Special considera-

High's football team in the unex-
plored area of making solid contact.
Among the missing elements,
according to their coach, were
blocking and tackling.
After a close first half, host
Cypress scored three touchdowns
Saturday night in the opening 2
minutes 20 seconds of the second
half to break it open while using
only two offensive plays, as the Cen-
turions (2-0) defeated Corona del

Western High.
Cypress senior Robert Clark
returned the second half kickoff 84
yards for a touchdown to ignite the
Centurions' blitz, after Cypress led
at halftime, 14-3.
On the Sea Kings' ensuing drive
after starting deep in their own terri-
tory, Cypress defensive back Jelani
Gamba sacked CdM junior quarter-
back Dylan Hendy in the end zone
and jarred the ball loose.

the end zone and the Centurions
had their second touchdown in 1 :22
without an offensive play. Chris
Adometto kicked the extra point for
Cypress to build its lead to 28-3.
After Javier Murguia of Cypress
recovered another CdM fumble at
the Sea Kings' 15-yard line on tl}e
game's next offensive play, the Cen-
turions reached paydirt again two
plays later wlien senior tailback Dar-
ren Shorter scored on a 5-yard run
with 9:40 remaining in the third
quarter. Adometto's fifth point-after
kick provided Cypress with a com-
manding 35-3 edge.
"Those were ~ig plays and I think
that swung the momentum com-
pletely around to us,• said Cypress
Coach Kerry Crabb, whose squad
got a jump-start on \he 2000 cam-
paign with a 44-7 victory last week
on the road against Handsworth of
North Vancouver, Canada.
·we returned that operung lock-
off for a touchdown, then got a
turnover in the end zone, then after
getting the ball back, we scored
again pretty quickly. From then on, it
was a fire drill.•
CdM Coach Dick Freeman,
whose squad opened its season, said
"It was ugly ... it was the worst foot-
ball game I've ever been associated
with here at Corona del Mar.•
Freeman was mainly concerned
about his team's blocking and tack-
ling. '
"Yeah, (the score) was good at
halftime, but I still think football is a
contact sport and we were not play-
,ing it right.· he said. "We've got a
long way to go. They took the wind
out of our sails the first time they hit
us. It was close at halftime, but we

? What do you bid now?
A • On lllu specific Duct ion, the
modem style is to uut a major-suit
rebid as showing no.extra values, as
a nonnal reverae would. Since rais-
ing clubs implies 1 stronger or more
distributional hand in suppon. that
leaves two spades as your only
rebid.
