Barry Faulkner DAllY PILOT COSTA MESA -Por tbe first time in bis coaching career. Estancia High head man Jay Noonan operates at the center of bis football program's universe. And, just more than two months after taking bis first head coaching job, the longtime assistant and former USC walk-on appears to have generated a big bang of enthusiasm that is tangible on the Eagles' practice field. With Noonan sUJVeying his -40-player roster, primarily from the center of the practice Ourry, Eagle players Oy between otfensive and defensive drills eager to impress. lbat there are more than two dozen varsity athletes at all is impressive to some, after a stand-· in staff guided a limited formation of Eagles through what amounted to a ceremonial spring' practice. This took place before Noonan was named to replace Dave Perkins, who is now guiding the crosstown rival Costa Mesa Mustangs. There was, Noonan later learned, even some dis- cussion among admlnistrators about the pos$ibWty of not having a football team at all this season. Any such scenario, however, disappeared amid COlldl NOODllll, the maelstrom generated by Noonan, who routinely projects CXlllvidion worthy of a pregame pep talk. •There was a problem with tbe kids' oonfid~ when I got here,• laid Noonan. whose molt reoaDl cnechtng aalgnment WU tutoring the running backs at Capistrano Valley High. ·1 think what we did, as coaches, was inject confidence. 0ne ot. the players, at our very first meeting, made a comment that any new coach is going to promise things. Noonan acknowledges the turnovers inherent in any option game, but he likes the fact that it forces defenses to have all potential ball carriers covered. The Eagles do not have traditional captains, but Bradshaw is one of the six members of what Noonan calls "the Order of the Talon,• each of whom has leadership responsi- bilities. Sophomore Jason Johnston will be Bradshaw's backup and will quarterback the Junior varsity. Running backs: Junior Tanielu, who played receiver last fall, will be joined in the starting backfield by fellow senior Raymond Romua. Tanielu (5-t 1, 170), whose older brothers Manu (Class of 1999) and Taleni (Class of '97) previously starred in the Estancia backfield, will hope to continue the family legacy. He caught one pass for 6 yards as a ju,nior, but his oext carry will be his first as a varsity player. ·He flies,· Noonan said of Tanielu, who will also start at outside linebacker. Romua (5-B, 165) carried three times for 2 yards last sauon and adds to the collection of speed Noonan believes ls bis team's strength. He is another in the Order of the Talon. Noonan said he will not use a traditional fullback, except in short-yardage situations, so both Tanielu and Romua will be asked to run inside as dive backs in. the option. • The use of three-foot line @lits, however, could allow item a greater opportunity to .ae their elusiveness than a (radltlonal smashmouth 4PJ>roach would provide. i Senior Mitch Valdes (5-6, f.CO), another Order of the lalon 4eslgnee, will be be utilized (requently' ln tbe backfield, according to Noonan. Defensive line: Lewis Bradshaw, whom Noonan considers the team's best football player, will be one half of an end tandem which operates from a standing position. This highly unusual practice for ends on a four-man front, will, Noonan believes, help limit opposing quarterbacks' sight lines, both before the snap and irrunectiateJy after. Fernando Montes has earned the starting nod at strong-side end , while Matt Morrell and sophomore Gary Jones a re slated to start at the tack.le spots. Noonan acknowledges having your quarterback play defensive end is unusual, but his philosophy is to keep the best players on the held. ·(Bradshaw) doesn't want to leave the field,• Noonan said. Montez (5-9, 245), a senior transfer from Connecticut, was tried initially up front, before being shifted to fill a l.inebacking need. Playing on the weak side, which Eagle coaches term the knocker backer, Montez will be deployed as a down linemen lo certain schemes. Macias will be counted on to supply a physjcaJ presence on the strong side.
