COSTA MESA -More than 50
people, some of them carrying a 12-
foot puppet of Gov. Gray Davis, rallied
outside of Fairview Developmental
Center on Thursday to protest the lack
of money allocated for stale employ-
. ees in the budget.
Marching to such tunes as "Get Up
Stand Up,• by Bob Marley and the
Wtulers, members of the American
FPdPraJ State County and Municipal
Employees Local 2620 picketed to
gam support for a better contract that
is being negotiated in Sacramento.
"We haven't had a decent contract
in more than seven years, and now
they're trying to tell us there im't
enough money in the budget,• union
member Tom Winnett said.
Informational protests, such as this
one, were scheduled all over the state,
marchers said.
State employees are protesting the
pay increases they've been given. wt
year, they received a 4 % increase
compared with the average in Califor-
nia of 5.2%, they said.
A representative from the gover-
nor's office could not be reached for
comment.
Marchers included pharmacists,
therapists, social workers and psychol-
ogists at Fairview Developmental
Center. The state hospital employs
more than 2,000 workers, making it
the city's largest employer, officials
said.
"We're all required to have at least
bachelor's degrees, if not master's, but
we are paid much less than others in
the same field,• union member
Richard Glabnan said.
Glabnan, 51, is a qualified mental
retardation professional and, although
he is highly educated, said he has
trouble supporting his family on his
salary.
Fellow marcher Marla Morgan
echoed his concern.
"I'm lucky my husband has a good-
paying computer job or I'd be in real
trouble,• she said.
Workers such as Willett, Glatman
and Morgan work with about 820
severely disabled patients, they said.
"If it weren't for the bond I have
made with my families, I would've
been out of here a long time ago,•
Morgan said.

I'm very fond of him. I've known bis
family for 30 years. He was a good ath-
lete and a cheerful guy. He always had
a mille. It's been a long two weeks.
We'll miss him."
Grant made no mention of Sweet
throughout the team's practice. He
said Saturday's service was enough.
He described the memorial service as
touching and said more than 500 peo-
ple attended.
Grant was among those who spoke
at the service. He used to race with
Sweet's grandfather, Dick Sweet, and
has known the family ever since.
"I said that we would leave bis'
[name) there.· ~t said, while staring ,
at the board. •1 said that we would
remember him that way. His [name) will
always be on the board, and that means
he's always here. I didn't say anything
about him today because everybody
knows it. Like they said about the
underground in Denmark during the
war: Most of what is being said is not
being said. The people who didn't know
[Brian), it would have no effect on them
if I mentioned him. But for the people
who knew Brian, I think Saturday was
the right way to end that ... He's here.•

Coach Dave Grant points ou~ boats In the Orange Coast College
boathouse during orlentaUon for the varsity men's crew team.
To the Pirates, Brian Sweet remains
at the OCC boathouse. It's the reason,
they were able to smile at Thursday's
practice. The memory of Sweet was the
reason they joked with one another.
Chris Pope was biS usual sell.
1boogb he misses one of bis best
friends. Pope was rather cheerful at the
training session. But, be admitted,
there was something, actually some-
one, missing.
Pope found Sweet after he collapsed
as the two were training together, run-
ning up and down the stadium steps.
"It's not the. same without him,"
Pope said. "I was thinldng about him
today, while we were sitting here this
morning. His (name) is up there. But
there's something missing. He was in
my boat last year. You usually want
your whole boat to come back. It real-
ly feels like something is missing.•
, Grad.l moved praetil:e. llong quick-

the new athletes. He spoke of his love
for rowing.
"In terms of teamwork, there's prob-
ably not any sport which is more
geared toward the importance of work·
ing together,• Grant told the crowd.
•There's some valuable lessons which
come from how important it is to work
together. And you'll see that as you get
further and further into rowing.•
When the Pi.rates mAde their way to
the water, that's when more memories or
Sweet unfolded. For coxswain Kristal
Maw, Sweet will always be a happy
memory. She laughed when asked what
she would r~ most of Sweel
·Him and Pope were such goofballs
together,• Maw said. Walking down to
the dock today, I thought about him.
He would've been on varsity this
year. We had the memorial service
here, so you couldn't help but think
about him."
For the next two weeks, the Pirates
will practice five days a week, begin-
ning at 6 a.m. Grant said be enjoys the
early morning practice because that's
when the water is calm and the re is no
traffic.
Grant made Thursday's practice
light to accommodate orientation for
the pewcomers. As practices continue,
some will drop the idea of being a part
of the OCC crew program. But for
those who were on the team last year,

Just before practice ended, Grant
gave his athletes parting words.
·vou've all done very well today,•
Grant said, speaking through the
megaphone as bis team rowed into the
docks. "Every day we're going to learn
something new. Tomorrow we'll start

DAllY PILOT
COSTA MESA -Por tbe first time in bis
coaching career. Estancia High head man Jay
Noonan operates at the center of bis football
program's universe. And, just more than two
months after taking bis first head coaching job, the
longtime assistant and former USC walk-on
appears to have generated a big bang of
enthusiasm that is tangible on the Eagles' practice
field.
With Noonan sUJVeying his -40-player roster,
primarily from the center of the practice Ourry,
Eagle players Oy between otfensive and defensive
drills eager to impress.
lbat there are more than two dozen varsity
athletes at all is impressive to some, after a stand-·
in staff guided a limited formation of Eagles
through what amounted to a ceremonial spring'
practice. This took place
before Noonan was named to
replace Dave Perkins, who is
now guiding the crosstown
rival Costa Mesa Mustangs.
There was, Noonan later
learned, even some dis-
cussion among admlnistrators
about the pos$ibWty of not
having a football team at all
this season.
Any such scenario,
however, disappeared amid COlldl NOODllll,
the maelstrom generated by
Noonan, who routinely
projects CXlllvidion worthy of a pregame pep talk.

Asking a first-year quarterback
to bigger the option, in which he
will read defenders in order to
direct the ball into the path of
least resistan ce, will require
some patience from the coaching
staff. Noonan acknowledges the
turnovers inherent in any option
game, but he likes the fact that
it forces defenses to have all
potential ball carriers covered.
The Eagles do not have
traditional captains, but
Bradshaw is one of the six
members of what Noonan calls
"the Order of the Talon,• each of
whom has leadership responsi-
bilities.
Sophomore Jason Johnston
will be Bradshaw's backup and
will quarterback the Junior
varsity.
Running backs: Junior
Tanielu, who played receiver
last fall, will be joined in the
starting backfield by fellow
senior Raymond Romua.
Tanielu (5-t 1, 170), whose
older brothers Manu (Class of
1999) and Taleni (Class of '97)
previously starred in the
Estancia backfield, will hope to
continue the family legacy. He
caught one pass for 6 yards as a
ju,nior, but his oext carry will be
his first as a varsity player.
·He flies,· Noonan said of
Tanielu, who will also start at
outside linebacker.
Romua (5-B, 165) carried
three times for 2 yards last
sauon and adds to the collection
of speed Noonan believes ls bis
team's strength. He is another
in the Order of the Talon.
