proposed a 22-home development
for the site but redesigned the
plans after hearing neighbors and
the city planning staff's concerns in
June.
The new proposal includes 2,500-
square-foot homes, modified grad-
ing and a plan to keep the existing
ficus tree at the site.
The Planning Commission
approved the project in August, but
Commissioners Chris Fewel and Kat-
rina Foley voted to deny the propos-
al, citing lot size and parking con-
cerns.

Jn 2001, all hospitals will

2008, buildings under serious

But compliance with the

The Women's Pavilion had

But Linda Taylor, a New-

regulations when she
designed the project.

Hoag projects since she
opened her office in 1979.
#A box is (the state's) idea of
a perfect structure. Once
you start deviating from
this, you pay major fines.·
Taylor said she tried to
come up with a design that
worked with the hospital's
19 other buildings.

just adding to the confusion

imposed early designs of the

Tie rules were slightly llfMI

1970, when Back Bay high

Southern Section like no other

Corona del Mar and Newport

every autumn in that six-year
span, and some believe the
absolute creme de la creme in
that era was the undefeated 1969
Sea King squad that finished
33-0 with standout Bruce Black,
who scored seven of his team's
nine goals in a 9-5 win
over Newport Harbor
in the CIF finals at
Belmont Plaza.

Bill Barnett said it was one of the

Black, the Irvine League

will and playing stifling defense
at a time when the game was
played with DO unlimited fouling,
no kick-outs and no extra-man
situations. There was more
man-to-man defense played and
less zone, he said.
"You had to be careful,· Black
said. "If you fouled too much,
you were gone (after

Black was "thrown

reality for Newport Harbor's
High's No. 1 aquatics family.
•Nothing's 0%> changed,• Peirsol
said. •My family
has been great at
trying to keep
things as normal as possible. Now that
I'm back home, with home-cooked
meals and I'm back in my old bed,
everything is pretty much the same.•
Perhaps the same in terms of normal
life, but has the Olympic experience
changed Peirsol?
"It's changed me, but it's bard to
describe bow it's changed me,• he said.
"I think I've matured a little bit during
all of this. I was away from the family
for over six weeks straight. I learned a
little bit about myself.·
Being a member of the U.S. Olympic
team was a great thrill for Peirsol, but
it wasn't all fun and games.
"There were a ton of rules and
regulations to follow,· Peirsol said.
"There was a sb'ict curfew before our
meet and we even had a curfew after
our meet. I guess with a lot of younger
athletes, they had lo be sb'ict. •
Peirsol did get to go out and see
some of the events, but for the most
part. kept to the business at band
before his competition.
"Before my event, I would practice
for a while, then watch other events on
television as they were happening,
which was pretty cool. After my race. I
went to some track and field events
and did some city sightseeing with my
family .•
During the Opening Ceremonies,
Peirsol got to experience firsthand one
of the best openings any Olympics has
ever seen. But even in all the hoopla,
he managed to strategically place
himself in a camera-friendly position
among the horde of American
participants.
•The swimmers made sure we were
near the rner\'s basketball players,•
Pelrsol said with a laugh. ·we also
made sure we were in front of them so
we could see everything that was
going on.·
On the podium to receive bis silver
medal and bearing the National
Anthem played was not only a
memorable moment, but also fuel for
motivation foT the 2004 Games in
Athens, Greece. • n was great bearing our anthem
played while I was up there with
Lenny, but I was thinking about bow
great it would be to win the gold and
have them play that anthem for me.•
Which brings us back to the
two-time gold-medal winner in Sydney.
Kra~elbwg, 24, has announced his
plans to compete at the Athens Games.
· •I tb1n.k that's a good thing, not only
for me, but for swimming as a whole,•
Pelrsol said. •He's a heck of a swimmer
and I think his best times bare still
ahead of him. It'll be nice to have
someone I can compete with for the
next four years."
It was only two years ago that the

A FURY REALIZED

onships are sometimes made from the
remnants of frustration and Estancia
High's Eagles appear to have all they
need as they prepare for their Pacific
Coast League slate.
Oh , there's still the matter of deal-
mg with Orange Friday night at El
Modena High in the season's final
nonleague tuneup, but the seeds of
Vlctory have clearly been planted.
"We're taldng the fury of this foot-
ball game into the next six weeks,•
said a seething Eagles Coach Dave
Perkins in the aftermath of Saturday
night's 35-28 loss to Santa Ana Valley
at Newport Harbor, leaving both
teams 2-2 on the nonleague trail.
Clearly the Eagles had their
chances, but at the top of the llst of
Per.kins' agonies were two fumbles,
both recovered in the Santa Ana Val-
ley end zone by falcons, both within
a mass of swarming defenders, that
stung a distraught Perkins.
The third-year Estancia coach
raced to co'!lfront the officials at
game's end.
·ceame referee) Al Jiackney told
me 'Our crew did a lousy job. We
took the game away from your kids,'

The Eagles' bull-like pounding of
Fahad Jahid was evident, as well
(8 yards per carry offensively and two
quarterbacks sacks from his Une-

moments by other Eagles.
Santa Ana Valley had its own ver-
sion of explosion, however, with the
antics of 230-pound sophomore
