llslen lo the choir sing •we say thank you" at Liberty Baptist Church' Veterans Day service In Newport Beach unday.
T o observe Veterans Day on Sunday, liberty Baptist
Church 1n N@wport Beach welcomed Vietnam vet-
eran Gary Beik1rch as its special guest of honor
President Nixon awarded Be1kirch, a U S. Army
sergeant and medical aidman in Vietnam, the prest igious
Congressional Medal of Honor for his service.
While defending Camp Oak Seang on April 1, 1970, the
United States forces and those o f its allies suffered an intense
and devastating attack that resulted in a number of casualties.
During the attack. Be1kirch tended to his f alien comrades.
At one point. he ran through heavf fire to assist 1 seri-
ously injured American officer lying in an exposed area.
Fragments of an exploding mortar shell left Be1kirch sen·
ously injured in his rescue attempt. but he pressed on and
carried the off lcer to a medical aid station.
Then, rather than tend to his own injuries, he continued
to search for •nd evacuate other injured men. Again, ene-
my fire injured him while he dragged a critically injured
Vietnamese soldier to the medical bunker.
And again, Beikirch refused treatment and continued to
help others until he finally collapsed. It was then that he
received treatrMnt tor his injuries, which earned him the
Purple Heart
