Q: How many times have you been asked to reveal your secrets? Have you ever told anyone how you do your illusions? A: More times then I can count! Everyone that works for and those at the venues around the world, they all sign a Msecrecy agreement· and none of these individuals turned out to be the masked magician! Q: With specials showing magic · behind the scenes, such as Fox net- work's masked magician, is it get- ting harder to make audiences believe in illusions? A:. I am fortunate to have the resources to have many methods to do each of my illusions. If someone makes a guess that is in the correct ballpark as to how I perform my magic, I keep the illusion but change the method. So, to. me, the simplistic guesses in these 1V shows and books ttiat aim to expose are like blanks fired from a gun. But there are thousands-Of magi- cians with families who are less for- tunate. They are hard-working entertainers who cannot afford to have multiple methods for their illu- sions. The produOOr's at Pox are putting these people out of work and affecting their famiJJ.es. Q: Who are your magical influ- ences? . A.:. Actually, the influences in my show have come from the arts.out- si~e of magic. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly -~ose dance greats have had a big lntluence. However, what Houdini was really great at was self-promotion. Q: Are there any acts you will just never do again? A: l stay away from lions and tigers and bears -way too messy! Q: Have you ever had a perfor- mance mishap? A:. A couple of times. Once, in Lake Tahoe. I bad this illusion with a red Ferrari. I }VU levitating it to above mybe4d.. lben. ho.ltway up. it just stopped and came crashing to ~e stage floor. Fortunately, I hadn't gotten under it yet. Roger Cartson DAILV PILOT COSTA MESA -Youth baseball legend Luke Davis, who celebrated his 94th birthday in October, died on Wednesday at his Costa Mesa home, where he had resided the past 70 years. Cause of death is pending because he was alone at the time. One of his three surviving nieces, Westminster's Ernestine Manson, said services and burial would be at Westminster Memorial Park, but no date or time has been established. Originally from Lubbock, Texas, he eventually caipe to HWltington Beach and was the last surviving player from the 1926 SWlset League championship football team at Hunt- ington Beach High, coached by Cap Sheue. Having retired at the early age of 3-' when investments in Union Oil turned to gold, he spent a great deel of his life in and around youth baseball. specifically with Rod Ma.cMillian and Harbor Area Base- ball Association, as a baseball coach. By 1976, while still active with the youth baseball program, the base- ball field at Lions Park was named Luke Davis Field. Countless players and parents were involved with Mr. Davis for some 35 years in the now defunct Harbor Area Baseball Association. Efforts had been made over the years from a loyal following to get him recognition at the Little League Baseball Hall of Fame, but it went for naught because he was never actually involved with Llttle League, which only began in the Newport- Mesa area about 15 years ago. He started by volunteerlng as a helper to MacMillian in 1950 by helping with the then-yearly presea- son football training program for boys in grades 6-9 operated by the Boys Club, in conjunction with New- port Harbor High Coach Al Irwin. ·He assisted by officiating Boys Club fiag football games that fall and then .helped in the spring with the Boys Oub track teams," said MacMillian, who had visited him last week. ·Luke's sister died last Christmas and it took him a long time to come to the door with his walker," said MacMillian. ·1 could see the end was near.· Although his expertise as a youth was football and track, MacMil.lian talked him into baseball as a coach in 1953 and, as MacMillian said, •He picked it up quickly and became a top-notch coach for the next 30-plus years." Tony Altobelli DAILY PILOT COSTA MESA -The.re's a new sheriff in town for the Costa Mesa High boys soccer team and his name is Eugene Day. The law of importance for the new Mustangs' skipper revolves around the •team• in teamwork. ·we have a lot of guys with good individual ball skills and in the past, we've bad a problem with that,• Day said. •This year, I'm lay- ing down the law and that law is I want the ball to be passed. I want the ball swing- ing back and forth across the field. If I can get the players into that frame of mind, that will give them more options than just ball-handling.• With only eight seniors on Day's squad, the Mustangs are young, but it's those young players that will bene- fit from Day the most. Day was the frosh-sopb coach for five years and has seen these young players develop throughout their Mesa careers. •we have 22 very talented players, which is a good prob- lem to have,• Day said. •rm going to switch some players around to try to see them all play and when league rolls around, I should have an idea as to where I want players to go.· The bulk of Mesa's return- ing core lies on the defensive side of the field.
