residents last week after local lead-
ers blasted him for doUW, a • 180-

ln an interview

.EACH Riordan clarified his
recent change of
heart on the subject. He now advo-
cates a regional solution. he sa.id.
but it should be up to Orange
County residents to decide whether
anticipated increases in air traffic
should be accommodated by
John Wayne Auport. El Toro or
elsewhere.
ln a last-nunute swprise to offi.
aals who thought Newport Coast
annexation was a done deaJ. resi-
dents on Friday handed in enough
signatures to possibly stop the
annexation.
Annexation aggravation doesn't
stop there. The city is gearing up to
annex parts of Bay Knolls and San-
ta Ana Heights. where residents,
too are gearing up for a fight. But
wilike theu Coast cow;i.terparts,
residents m these areas are fighting
to become part of Newport Beach
UlStead of Costd Mesa.
In other news. City Council
members are looking for ways to
comply with some tough new
water-quality rules that will likely
be imposed by the reqional water
quality board. One proposed rule
would make 1t illegal for merchants
to hose down theu sidewalks
unless they capture all the water
with sandbags. then vacuum it up
to keep it out of the stonn drains.

'STORM ROLLS IN'
YIOllln flOM 'Ill semi Worklng on your day off
Is not usually fun. With a photographer out sic}( and
one on vacalion, I had to come in to be a one-man
show.
The only art we had in mind /or the cover was
dependent on a storm that might or might not hit
Orange County. As deadline approacl1ed, with no
sign of rain. I headed to the beach to look for other
alternatives.
hll.llle and buaUe of a strellilul day. I atepped out of
the car and there wds a wonderful breeze and plenty
of aunahlne. It was nothing Uke the ralny day I had
been expecting. There's nothing more typically
Southern California than the BaJboa Peninaula and Jta
sld.mboardera. in thia ca• Parker Del Ponte (left) and
Ryan Rhodea. And for one quick aecond, I found
myself feeling /Jke I wosn't on the job. but ahoollng

This is our comnl~ty. We live and work here and want
to make a difference. Recently, we started discussing
among ourselves what we could do to contribute to .our
neighborhood. We believe education is the biggest single
factor necessary for a successful future for our children.
So, we 're putting our money where it counts. For every • •
car sold at any Harbor Blvd. of Cars dealership, we will
donate a substantial amount to tlie Newport-Mesa School
District. So far, we've donated $150,000 thi$ year! We've
just begun to make a difference in our neighborhood, .
