Newport Harbor to · battle for CIF title
•Defending champion
Sailors face familiar rival
Irvine in rematch of 1999
CIF Division VI title game.
COSTA MESA -For the second
straight season, once is not enough
for the football programs from New-
port Harbor and Irvine high
schools.
The two Sea View League rivals,
whose regular-season showdowns
frequently decide league supremacy,
will square off for a much bigger
prize tonight in the CIF Southern
Section Division VI championship
game. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Orange
Coast College.
It's the third CIF title confrontation
for the Sailors (11·2) and Vaqueros
(13-0) since 1992. They've split the
first two. Newport came from behind
to win last year, 19-18, and captured
its second section crown in 69 varsity
seasons.
Irvine, gunning for its first unde-
feated season in its 24-year varsity
history, won the 1992 title clash, 30-
8. Th.at was the second of three
straight section titles won by lrvtne,
led by 20-year Head Coach Terry
Henigan. .
Jeff Brinkley, who took over the
Sailors' helm in 1986, bas guided the
Tars to five CIF finals over the last
nine years. Their 1994 crown capped
a 14-0 season.
Newport Harbor's offense is led
by senior tailback Chris Manderino,
who has rushed for 2,068 yards and
scored 31 touchdowns, the latter a
Newport-Mesa district single-season
record. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound tail

• SANTA ANA -A story suffused wtth
sex, lies, secret tapes. greed and murder
emerged Thursday as prosecution and
defense attorneys presented their operung
statements in the trial of a Newport Beach
man accused of killing his wife.
The marriage between Eric Bechler
and his wife, Pegye, is a story with a
delightful fairy tale beginning that ended
in a frightful and horrible tragedy, said
Deputy Dist. Atty. Debora Lloyd in her
opening statement.
Prosecutors have charged Bechler with
knocking his wife unconscious and dump-
ing her overboard during a boating trip off
the coast of Newport Beach on July 6,
1997, to celebrate their fifth wedding
anniversary.
. Bechler, 33, has pleaded not guilty, say-
ing his wife was swept underwater by a
rogue wave as she was dnving a speed-
boat and towing him on a boogie board.
The body of the 38-year-old triathlete and
expert swimmer has never been found.
Bechler was arrested in November
1999 after police wired h1s ex-girlfriend
Tina New and surreptitiously recorded
their conversations over the phone and at
a rest.awant, where the defendant report-
edly admitted to killing his wife.
John Barnett, Becbler's attorney,
argued Thursday that Bechler lied when
he claimed to have killed bis wife in an
attempt to fuel New's fantasy of romenc-

Rather, it's something clos-

This season, the 13-

Nowadays, the singer

Belafonte, no newcomer

ple are familiar with,"
Belafonte said. Music "that

Belafonte's career began
when he started perform-
ing with the American
Negro Theatre in New

simultaneously studied
drama at Erwin Piscator's
Dramatic Workshop.
A singing role led to
cabaret engagements,
which led to a recording
career in 1949 and songs
that climbed to the top of
the billboard charts in the

occasionally in films.
But Belafonte's civil

He has been honored
by such groups as the

the U.S. State Department

received the Albert Ein-

The Piecemakers' store is

to sign a document to conduct
a facility inspection. We have
not been asked to sign any-
thing at any of the other
Orange County food facilities
in our normal course of con-
ducting food inspections. This
is certainly an extremely
unusual -even unheard of -
requirement on their part.•
Tension between the Piece-
mak.ers and the health depart-
ment escalated in September,
when the department found
additional health code viola-
tions and both parties accused
the other of hostile treatment.
A Superior Court judge
decided against extending
the Piecemakers' probation at
a court bearing later that
month, however, saying the
violations were minor.

pelfect marriage and that
Bechler "hated his wife.•
'tbe prosecution presented
three witnesses Thursday
afternoon, including Glen·
da Mason. Pegye Bechler's
best friend. Mason
desaibed her friend as an
"inaedible mother.•
"She's the best mother I
know," she said, choking.
"She was happy, joyous
and kind."
The Bechlers have three
children.
Mason also testified that
Bechler rarely showed any
affection for his wife and
that Pegye Bechler was not
happy in their relationship
months before her disap·
pearance.
Jonathan O'Brien,
Pegye Becbler's assistant,
and David Grant, the
Becblers' next-<loor neigh·
bor on Cllff Drive, both
said the couple argued
loudly and often.
Bechler, who came to
court in a plaid shirt and
khakis, spent the first day
of trial constantly jotting
down notes as attorneys
argued. He frequently con·
ferred with Barnett.
On Thursday, Uoyd told
the jury -10 women and
four men, including alter·
nates -that she will pre-
sent evidence to prove that
Bechler had murdered his
wife for a hefty financial

said Bec:hlet had no money
until he met Pegye Bech-
ler, who ran a Oourisbing
physical therapy bu.sines1.
•His was really a 'rags to
riches' story," she said. "He
had a pair of shorts to his
name before he met his
wife. He would wear the
same shorts every day. And
when he had to go out,
he'd wait for those shorts to
get out of the dryer.• •
But soon after their mar·
riage, Bechler went from
an old, faded pair of shorts
to slick Armani slacks,
Uoydsaid.
In contrast, Barnett said
Bechler was a dutiful bus·
band who pulled his own
weight financially.
•He paid more than
what was required of him,•
Barnett said. •He wrote
checks for Pegye's
Porsche, for his Jeep and
paid the mortgage every
month."
He added that before
marrying, Bechler had
$40,000 as a shareholder in
Bechler Corp., a company
worth $15 million.
Barnett also ~d that
Bechler lied to New about
his wife's disappearance to
prove that he could be a
bad boy -spinning the
"sick tale" because of
desire.
"Why did Eric do it? For
sex with Tina New,• Bar-
nett said. "It's nothing to
be proud of. But it wasn't
murder.•
Barnett said he expects
there will be at least 30 to
40 witnesses in what he
called a complex and
unique trial. More prosecu·
tion witnesses are sched·
uled to testify Monday.
"It's the case that ha.s no
body and secretly recorded
tapes,• Barnett said. "It's
about a man who lied
because of his desire for a
woman.•

The city's dedston to
remove the trees was
clinched by a recommenda-

Niederhaus said that 1n a
report, ICW Group singled
out 10 trees in Porter's neigh·

declined to release a copy of
the report but read portions of
the multi-page document in a
telephone interview. ·u these trees were to fall,
there is a high possibility of
serious property damage and
possibly injury or death for a

The two teams have split their
previous 16 meetings, with Harbor

Both teams made four CIP ctuun-

Irvine's defense, which aligns in
the 46 scheme made famous by
Buddy Ryan's Chicago Bear units in
the mid-1980s, has been thoroughly
impressive, especially in the play-

under Friday night lights, savoring the
untainted virtue of prep football, forging
la.sting trtendships with one another and,
basically, yelling themselves hoarse.
At home or on the road, amid December
drizzle or balmy late-summer sunsets, they
arrive early, stand in unison for every kickoff,
and lavish unyielding support upon
teenagen they seldom, if ever, meet.
You'll find dose to a dozen of them at
tonight's CIF Southern Section Division VI
championship game at Orange Coast
College. under their home-made •Tar Pit"
banner, supporting the Newport Harbor
Sailon as if their sons' season depended on it.
•1 played football at Costa Mesa High
(Class of '62), but my four kids went to
Newport Harbor and all my grandchildren
(nine to date) will all go to Newport Harbor,•
said Rick Roberts, a 58-year-old retiree and
president of the Tar Pit.
. n oberts coined the term to unify those who

they can on the road. ·rm not an alumnus,
but I consider myself one.•
Mark Harris, a parks commissioner for
showing up every game in the tean years
that makes this group what is is,• Mark
Harris said. .
They all have their favorite Harbor
memory, most of wh.lcb have little do with
the CIF championships won in HMM and '99.
And some have a favorite player, more llkely
a lineman with whom they struck up a
conversation at a local restaurant, than a
decorated star.
Bockmiller, just finishing his second
one-year stint as president of the Mesa
Consolidated Water Dlstrict, was a
heavyweight wrestler at Harbor and has
always been a staunch supporter of Sailor
athletics.
"When I was in high school, I was
involved with a group called STOMP:
Superior Tars Advocating More Pride.• he
said. •1 fell in love with football way back
then, even though I was honest enough
with myself to know I wasn't meant to be a
player.•
Bockmiller said be pays little attention to
college or professional football.
the City of Costa Mesa and Tar Pit vice
president, is a Harbor alum (Class of '78), as
is Tar Pit devotee Fred Bockmiller (Class of
'80), an engineer who regularly wears his old
letterman's jacket to games.
But Tar Pit Secretary Jessica Harris,
Mark's wife and an office manager, was a
cheerleader at -gasp ~orona del Mar.
Additional memben Mark Farrar, a trial
attorney who played collegiately at Arizona
State, small business owner Jeff Kingsley,
and Jackie Roberts, Rick's wife, have also
adopted the school and its football team.

·1 don't watch the Super Bowl and I don't
care about the Super Bowl,• he said. "I
watch, maybe the Army-Navy game, and the
USC-UCLA game, but I'm a high school fan.
The purity of high school football keeps me
coming out, year after year.•
Farrar said he regularly gets bewildered
looks from colleagues, puzzled that he'd
attend so many games without knowing
any of the players.
•They're a fired-up group,• Newport
Coach Jeff Brinkley said. ·we have good
community support across the board and
(the Tar Pit) is certa.inly a part of that.•
This year, Jessica Harris had hats made usually scatter pretty quickly," said Roberts,
for members, who faithfully wear the blue a former lower-level Harbor assistant coach

should support kids in positive activities,•
Roberts, whose son Rick Jr. played varsity
football for the Tani in the mid-1980s, said.
"I just love football. especially at this level,~
Farrar said. "It's a great environment.•
Members of Rick Roberts' church often
shake their heads, when, having thrashed
his voice at Friday's game, he still can't talk
Sunday morning.
Ed Johnson, another member of the group
Bockmiller compares loosely with the
Cleveland Browns' "Dog Pound,• stayed on
after his son (former All-CIF Sailor punter
Eddie Johnson, who played the last two
years at Orange Coast College) moved on.
'"rbe latter refers to the sped.fie insistence, J. led by Bockmiller, that every Harbor fan
rise for the kickoff. But, Jessica Harris
believes, the quotation also captures the
spirit of the group.
•If you don't want to cheer, you shouldn't
come to the game,• she said.
This ardent attitude, as well as some
occasionally salty language, have made the
Tar Pit an acquired taste for some
less-zealous rooters.
"I love to win, don't get me wrong. But I'd be
here win, lose or draw, to support the kids. I
admire the effort they give and the program
they go through is pretty rigorous. They give
up a lot and I think it's a shame when they're
not supported."
Several members said the Sailors' recent
run of success (five CIF title-game
appearances since 1992), is merely
coincidental and not the catalyst behind their
allegiance. The Tar Pit, they avow, is no
bandwagon.
•Tue quality of the game, ususally dictates
the quality of my voice for the weekend,·
Roberts said.
Jessica Harris, whose knowledge of the
game is still improvpig, said she has a good
time, even when her attention strays from the
field.
•Jt's a great Friday night of wonderful
family entertainment," she said. •I like the
band and the cheerleaders and I like to see
our friends every week. We're always
disappointed when football season is over
and we always look forward to it coming
around again.·
"But I think the ~ents are getting used
to us and I try to make sure the guys keep
their comments tempered,• Jessica Harris
said.
"None of us have kids in the program,•
said Mark Harris, who. brushed some blue
paint on white canvas to create the banner, a
visual beacon to members at road games.
"But I've probably missed about 10 games
since 1978. • "The people who think we're too loud, "The good years are a lot of fun, but it's
