Church celebrates Our

With roses and candles for the altar,
thousands of Catholics on Tuesday '
completed a nine-day commemoration
for Our Lady of Guadalupe -another
name for the V11gin Mary -at St.

The church celebrated the anniver-

prayers, special Masses and celebra-

Saturday.
The church attributed the high
attendance at its commemoration

"This is a Mexican tradition,• said
Margot Santos, Spanish coordinator of
the church's family life office. "She is
the mother of Jesus, and we celebrate
her with a lot of devotion. Many peo·
pie are very grateful to her because
she intercedes on their behalf.•
Edilith Torres, a member of the
church, said she feels she can relate to
Our Lady of Guadalupe because
"she's a mother too.•
»She cares for her son the same
way we care for our kids, and she had
to suffer while he was on the cross,•
Torres said. •And she has done many
miracles. They say if you want a
prayer to be answered, you should
pray to her because she is the closest
one to God. You pray to God himself,

A suggestion that heads straight for Newporl-Mesa S sewers
Having marked my 42nd
year on this planet
Tuesday, the rusty
arthritis in my right shoulder
and the cranky condition of
my lower back served to
remind me -more effective-
ly than last year, I might add
-that it is pinheaded to
continue sidestepping an
annual rendezvous with my
doctor and his box of rubber
gloves.
The bald and harsh truth
is this: Things start breaking
when they get old. And it
seems to me, increasingly so,
that a broad survey of my
machinery is by far the wiser
thing than simply waiting for
some part -hopefully not
mission critical -to shut
down.
With that said, I think
there's a relation here to the
advancing age of what civil
engineers like to call infra-
structure in our twin cities.
But let's not throw around
fancy words. A critical part of
what makes our lives in
Newport Beach and Costa
Mesa so grand is the net-
work of pipes, drains and
pumps that deliver water to
our homes and take it away
once we've fouled st with1.he
unmentionables of human
existence.
Byron de Arakal
BEJWEEN THE LINES
Now it's understandable
that we pay little thought to
all of this, so long as it works.
But if you've ever wrestled
with a congested drain -or
paid a plumber to wrestle
with it for you -you're
aware of the price to be paid
for inattention. Clearly, the
stakes are considerably high-
er for an entire city.
Last month, a 73-year-old
water main buried beneath
Dover Drive in Newport
Beach had enough. In med-
ical parlance, the thing had
an aneurysm. Thousands of
gallons of water poured from
the ruptured pipeline, under-
mining the roadbed and
opening a huge sinkhole.
Nearby residents were stuck
with dry faucets for about 45

minutes, Councilwoman Nor-
ma Glover said at the City
Council's Nov. 28 meeting,
while rightfully praising the
quick work of the city's public
works aew to restore service.
Nevertheless, the breach
took Dover Drive offline for
several days and ultimately
cost the city $155,000 to
repair.
Though not a symptom of
Newport Beach's admittedly
aging sewer and water infra-
structure, the Dec. 8 rupture
of a waste-water pipeline on
Irvine Ranch Water District
land dumped more than
250,000 gallons of partially
treated sewage into San
Diego Creek, which ulti-
mately contaminated Upper
Newport Bay. That little inci-
dent forced a shutdown of
portions of Newport Bay for
roughly three days.
Costa Mesa hasn't been
without its share of infra-
structure ills symptomatic of
elderly pipelines. During the
city's 1998-99 fiscal year,
Costa Mesa reported 20
sewage spills to the Orange
County Sanitation District.
These episodes are
arguably less dramatic than
the plague of inf.rastructure
ills that have ravaged Hunt-
ington Beach in recent years.
The most recent and note-
worthy example of that city's
decaying sewers and storm .
drains caine to light in Los
Angeles nrnes reporter Meg
James' story revealing that
some 71,324 gallons of raw
sewage was pouring from
broken and cracked sewer
lines throughout much of the
1990s. ·The revelation served
to remind Huntington Beach
and its residents of the rea-
son why its City Council
launched in 1995 a massive
stem-to-stem examination of
the health of Huntington
Beach's Infrastructure.
Much of Huntington
Beach's underground infra-
structure was put in place in
the 1940s and 1950s as the
city entered an era of unbri-
dled post-World War D
development. Compared to
·the senior status of much of
the pipeline network lying
beneath Newport Beach and
Costa Mesa, Huntington
Beach's infrastructure could
fairly be categorized as mid-
dle-aged.
Nevertheless, when Hunt-

First prep football campaign
of the millennium produced
many memorable moments.
Forget what the encyclopedia
may say about benchmarks
such as equinox and solstice,
and disregard the falling leaves
and dropping temperatw"es which
you've encountered for weeks.
For this sportswriter, the change
of seasons is not so much fall to
winter to spring to summer, as
football to basketball to ba:.eball to
vacation.
Oh sure, I also enjoy the other
sports that fill out the prep athletic
calendar. 1 just don't set my
occupational clock to them.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Sailors claim
63-49 victory
• Newport puts Orange
Lutheran away at Anaheim
Convention Center tourney.
Steve Virgen
DAJLY PILOT
ANAHEIM -With two of its starters
out of action -one for the first quarter
and one for the game -the Newport
Harbor High boys basketball team was
already at a disadvantage. But the
Sailors really wanted to forget its first
loss of the season to El Toro on Satur-
day.
Harbor's desire and Tony Melum's
26 points and 11 rebounds led the
Sailors to a 63-49 victory over Orange
Lutheran Tuesday night in the first
round of the Anaheim Convention
Center Holiday Classic.
Harbor starter Jamie Diefenbach
was ill and senior Aaron Yamal sat out
the first quarter because of an infrac-
tion of team policy.
"We battled through some adversi-
ty tonight," Harbor Coach Larry Hirst
said. "Coming out with a quick lead
definitely helped.·
The Sailors (7-1) opened with an 8-0
lead with Melum scoring six of those
points.
"We came out and played defense.•
Melum said. •But it was all downhill
from there. We struggled for a while.•
The Sailors carried a 31-16 advan-
tage into halftime as they closed out
the second quarter with an 11-3 run.
But the Lancers retaliated in the third
quarter with a 14-4 run and pulled to
within five.
Hirst then went back to his starters
to build back the big lead. "With the
long tournament,• Hirst said. •1 want-
ed to try new combinations.•
With seven minutes remaining,
starters Melum, Greg Perrine, and
Steve Young reentered and outscored
the Lancers, 15-10, down the stretch.
"We just wanted to redeem our-
selves/ said Perrine, who had 12
points and seven assists.
Harbor also received help from the
bench as Nadirn Pajevic grabbed nine
rebounds and Chase Cameron scored
six points, including a three-pointer.

It is, I find, this particular
transition from football to
basketball that is annually the most
stark. Basketball season really
doesn't begin, for me, until football
is over.
So, after 14 glorious weeks and
a three-day weekend, it is time to
put away the binoculars, file away
the gamebusters and Bravehearts,
polish off the statistics and comm.it
the first football season of the new
millennium to memory.
Before it all gets crammed into
Manila folders, however, I thought
I'd share a few memories with you.
• Best game -Estancia 34, Costa
Mesa 27. Titis Oct. 27 crosstown
showdown featured playoff
ramifications, a surprising
20-0 Costa Mesa lead and
a dramatic Estancia come-
back. all nmid the
emotional atmosphere only
rivalry games can create.
Yt\fds, scored 31
touchdowns, and was a
relentless defensive force
at outside linebacker.
Estancia drew even late
in the thlrd quarter, went
ahead, 27-20, on its next
possession, but had to
score in the final 21
seconds to break a 27-27
tie. Barry Faulkner

Manderino's four-game
postseason (692 yards and
10 TDs) was even more
remarkable, considering
he separated his right

Harbor senior Chris
Manderino turned in a two-way
performance to rival Harbor recent

• Best hits -The one that
stands out is Manderino
leveling La Mirada tight end Brett
EriclOion after a catch over the
middle in the Sailors' 35-i6
semifinal upset.
But, in terms of sheer quantity,
Newport senior middle linebacker
AI«n "No 1\'espassing" Saenz
registered most on the stick-ometer.
Costa Mesa senior 170-pound
linebacker Louis Day, lithe but
lethal, al.so deserves mention for
several tombstone tackles.
A late entry comes from Harbor
offensive guard Jim Erickson, who
made Irvine's Joe Bollard pay for a
45-yard interception return with a
blindside levitation near midfield in
Friday's Division VI title game.

county, without a doubt,• Mesa Coach Jim
Weeks said. "She hit key shots for us at
key times that allowed us to get control of
the game.·
Despite the hot shooting from Hatsushi.
the Sailors (0-6) refused ft> go away, to the
delight of !mt-year coach Glenn Albios.
"We're a very young team, but we're
getting better and better each game,·
Albios said. ·u we can control the game
with our defense and continue to be
aggressive, we can be successful. Right
now, we're making mistakes that a young
team would make.·
Freshman Krystal Mino led the Sailors
with 12 points, followed by juniors Evita
Castillo (11 points) and Nadja Topalovic
(six points).
"That's a team that will not let you
quit,• Weeks said of Newport. "That was a
good game for us to have after a week-
and-a-half layoff.·
The Sailors bad the momentum for the
first quarter, building a seven-point lead
before Hatsushi got hot.
"We missed a ton of open shots in that
first quarter, which is very frustrating,•
Weeks said. "It was pretty obvious we
hadn't played in a while.•
Trailing by three, Hatsushl buried three
treys in the second quarter, the third giving
the Mustangs the lead for good.
Mesa opened the third quarter with a
15-4 run, turning a five-point lead into a
comfortable 16-point advantage. Hatsushi
drilled three more treys in that frame.
•We were able to go on a couple of
offensive spurts that gave us an opportuni-
ty to control the game,• Weeks said.
Newport refused to die in the fourth
quarter. With tough defense and an up-
tempo offense, the Sailors managed to cut
Mesa's lead to nine on a couple occasions
down the stretch.
But Hatsushi proved too tough down
the stretch. Despite no three-polnters, she
was 5 of 6 from the free-lb.tow line and
scored seven of Mesa's 17 fourth-quarter
points. .
The Mustangs will host Cypress on
Thursday at 1 p.m., while the sauors play
again on Monday at the Artesia lbumey.

Scha lle r Boxes have been produced by the same
family in Germany for more than 100 years. These
papier-mache Samas first take shape from antique
molds. Then they are slowly lacquered and finished
with chenille, mica, and tiny glass pearls. The entire
process takes seven full days. Each Santa is hollow,
making them ideal for hiding candy and treats .
